Reading the trade thread on the Blues board it appears as though a few posters were happy to see him go.

It's always good when you clear cap space to help you retain your best players and in doing so you lose a diving, small, scoring forward who clearly did not want to be in St-Louis anymore (according to radio interviews from the off season) AND you get a 2nd round pick alongside a semi-good scoring 3rd line player

OMG relax people...

Our team is a young one. Every player that they've wanted to keep, is locked up long term.

Now is not the time to push the limits of the cap. Overpaying people isn't the answer.

Look at past cup winners... they go out and add UFA's to put them over the top.
Boston - Chara
Chicago - Hossa
etc

But timing has a lot to do with that.

It's kind of like catching lightning in a bottle: the right UFA has to be available, and you have to have/make the room for them.

There are far more cases where signing UFAs has rendered nothing.

Pittsburgh - Iginla

Yeah that works all the time.

We did add a UFA. Clarke MacArthur.

I doubt it, he did lead their team in scoring last season. I would love to make a deal with St Louis for Stewart, like moving Conacher, Condra & JOB although I doubt that would be enough but it would help them to open up a little more cap space.

I like Stewart, Bogosian & Wheeler on that list.

The Blues have around $13 million in cap space to re-sign Alex Pietrangelo, Magnus Paajarvi and Chris Stewart. Pietrangelo will likely get between $6,000,000-$7,250,000 and Paajarvi will likely get between $1,200,000-$1,800,000. That leaves between $3,950,000-$5,800,000 left to re-sign Stewart.

Stewart's agent will likely use David Clarkson's($5,250,000), Milan Lucic's($6,000,000), Ryane Clowe's($4,850,000) and Scott Hartnell's($4,750,000)contracts as what they feel Stewart is worth. Therefore Stewart's compensation will likely range between $4,750,000-$6,000,000. If the arbitrator decides to average those contracts then Stewart will be awarded $5,212,500. So even if Stewart is awarded a contract on a low end of that range, he will still potentially be too expensive for St Louis because they will only be left with $1,050,000 in cap space. That really restricts what they can do in terms of call ups and trades and doesn't even factor in a potential internal budget. The fact that both Clowe and Clarkson made bank this summer will really benefit Stewart and really **** St Louis.

Once the arbitrator awards compensation, the organization only has two options; either sign the player to the awarded contract or walk away. My bet is that is they go to arbitration, Stewart gets a comparable contract to what have proposed and the Blues are forced to walk. Therefore Stewart will become an unrestricted free agent and will be free to negotiate with and sign an contract with any organization he so pleases.

In the event that Stewart does actually become a UFA, Murray should pursue him aggressively.

That would be great if it works out that way but my guess would be they settle before they go to arbitration, Stewart is afterall their leading scorer, you don't see to many organizations let their leading scorer walk. But knowing all that BM could make a pitch for Stewart before he goes to arbitration so that St Louis at least gets something for him if they know they won't be able to sign him. I would also sign Stewart before Paajarvi who has yet to do anything of signifigance since his rookie yr in the NHL. Should be interesting to see play out. There are a lot of interesting storylines playing out in the NHL this yr with buyouts & the cap coming down.

Spezza could have left already. He didn't need to sign that 7 year deal or whatever it was.

Karlsson didn't need to sign his nice long deal either.

Are we going to keep Michalek? Are we going to re-sign Spezza and Ryan?

Are we going to keep this group together and take a run at the Cup? They are going to get more expensive as the years go by.

Money not spent now is money that can be spent later, when we'll actually need it.

Then don't come running back if the Sens ever make it to the Cup finals and pretend you've been a fan through hell and high water!

What i mean is i'm not going to support an owner who can't keep his own players because he can't build a casino near or next the CTC. And i have been a fan during the Bryden days.

bolded are rfa's we can lock them long term or match long term offersheats... worried about the ones about to enter UFA, by the time anderson's contracts up Driedger can back up lehner who should be a 1A starter by then

Kovalchuk just royally ****ed over the Devils until next offseason, when they'll likely be forced to use a compliance buyout on him. Otherwise he has a $6,666,667 hit until 2024-25.

Yes but getting a good UFA has a lot to do with your team as it does with your owners wallet. High quality players want to play for high quality teams.
