He's getting paid a total of $32.667 million over the next 14 years, which amounts to an annual payment of $1.76 million. So, as long as he's given a decent paycheck, I think he'll be more concerned with fit and whether the team can contend as opposed to making as much money as he can. He's pretty set for the next 15 years.

Doesn't mean a team will overpay so that he simply can't refuse. If Brad May's report is true, though, it means two of his biggest contenders are already out of it (Toronto and Montreal).

Even players that are set for life have certain financial expectations. Especially when they're in line with market value. Vinny in an open market would get 25-30M spread over a half decade. How much of a discount would he accept because of the 2M~ he'll be collecting annually? I don't think it'll be much, if any at all.

I really have to unsubscribe from the New York Rangers Facebook group. In one post, someone said that we should sign Zidlicky but not go for Lecavalier because he's too old, and instead, sign Mike Ribeiro. The kicker? Try Del Zotto at forward.

Posting here has made me a hockey snob.

Vinny L is an interesting proposition. If we buy out Richards and replace him with Vinny on a 3 year 5 million per contract, that would actually be good. It's only 3 years, we get great center depth, and honestly I think Vinny still has some left in the tank. Apparently he's been working out hard after his injuries and is the healthiest he's been. People comparing it to Richards are off base. The problem with Richards is the length and the cap circumvention penalties we will suffer when he retires early. If we could re structure Richards' contract to be 3 years at his cap hit, I don't think he'd get bought out.

I don't know, I think replacing Richards with Vinny L could be an interesting move that could pay off. I think it's quite the long shot but we'll see.

The Rangers roster is pretty green, especially sans Richards and Clowe. The oldest regular on the team would be Marty Biron, and the oldest regular skater would be Pyatt, followed by Nash. So, I'm not so sure adding an "old guy", as you put it, would be a bad thing. Lecavalier is 34 years old, and he can still produce. He's got size, isn't slow, is a great leader, has a ton of experience, and, most importantly, can fire the puck. I think he would be a tremendous addition to the powerplay. He'd give the Rangers the one-time shot that they have sorely lacked since Jagr left.

The more I think about it, the more I'd advocate going after Lecavalier. He is still a very good player. He had 32 points in 39 games last year. 49 in 64 the year prior. He's healthier now than he was the past few years, and I'd say he still has a good three years of high level hockey left. Play him on LW, rotate him at C depending on who's hot/who's cold. Adds versatility to the lineup.

Dreger mentioned that Toronto, Detroit, and Montreal would offer him around 3 years, $4.5M per. I'd definitely take him on that contract. Would much rather have him than Brière (although I wouldn't be opposed if Lecavalier decides to sign elsewhere), Ryder, or Clowe. Add Bolland, as well, and I think it's a damn good team to go into next season with.

Kreider-Stepan-Nash
Lecavalier-Brassard-Zuccarello
Hagelin-Bolland-Callahan
Miller/Fast-Boyle-Dorsett
Pyatt

That's just one scenario, but it's a scenario I really, really like.

I agree all the way almost.

I think Brassard moves to the wings before Lecav though. Brass can definitely play on the wing.

I am not worried of Lindberg if we get Lecav. Look at Chicago, how many centers did they have in their top 12? 8? Brass can play wing just as well as center. I am not sure if Lecav or Stepan can play wing, but we'd still have room for wingers.

Lecavalier is a good fit with a bunch of players on our roster; from Nash to Clowe to Zucc to Kreider.

He is definitely no savior. We in NY fails when we try to get saviors. I don't think we nearly has as bad track record when we get players a tier below that.

Can we stop trading for and signing old guys?

It's good that you are sceptical. But we have no older players on the roster. Who is the oldes guy we have? One 4th lineer in Asham and then Hank? Hank is what 31?

The Blueshirts are not committed to re-signing impending free agent winger Ryan Clowe, who is believed to have sustained concussions on April 25 and May 10 previously having suffered on with San Jose before being traded to New York on April 2.

If the Rangers do re-sign Clowe, the Sharks will get their second-round pick in 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

Move on from Clowe. He wants a long term deal. The Rangers lose their 5th in 2014 as part of the Clowe deal. They have FLA's 5th to replace that pick.

Richards is a cap recapture and performance issue. He isn't retiring before 2017. Four more years of him. He will be better next season because he can't be any worse. Is the "better" enough to justify the $6,666,667 cap hit? The Rangers need to move on from him too. He didn't play anywhere during the lockout. He didn't skate very much. That is the excuse for him. Richards is a big boy. Buy him out and move on. Clowe didn't play during the lockout. It showed. If the Rangers don't cut ties with Richards, they could have him on their cap until 2020 or beyond if they use a regular buyout on him in the future.

He clearly has the talent and has scored at this level before.

He's proven as much as JVR, if not more. You're advocating to trade Girardi, the team's leading ice time muncher for him. But wouldn't move Chris Kreider, an absolute unknown prospect who struggled this year for Perron?

I'll gladly eat crow if he constantly hits numbers of that ilk. I just don't see that happening IMO.

the criteria of consistently hitting that mark when talking about a player that has hit 21 ONCE seems a bit unfair no?

If Kreider his the 30 goal mark once and Peron's high remains 21, then this would have been a deal not worth making.

Signing Vincent L after complaining over the signings of Richards and Drury proves that nothing can't be learned from history?

Cammalleri and Bolland are 1-year rentals, who would give us the needed depth for a cup run. What are the trade scenarios likely to happen in these?

Cammalleri for Pyatt, Thomas/Bourque/St.Croix and a 3rd/2nd(2014)?
Bolland for Boyle and a 3rd/prospect?

Cammalleri gives us the needed LW scoring and also pushes others down for depth. He also is a 2014-UFA, so his contract won't be haunting the team for years, which most of the free agents this summer would do.

Bolland would give us a great center for the AV:s "two-way-line"

I might be way off on these proposals, so if they were complete bs. what would it take to acquire them?

Tell me about it. I wasted 30 minutes of my life explaining to some one that Kreider doesn't play center and didn't understand the buy out principles relating to Richards. His response: it was all Torts' fault. SMDH

Torts was 100% correct about Richards and the lockout

“I worry about our older guys like Richie [Brad Richards] and Rupper [Mike Rupp] who aren’t playing. It’s tough and they need to stay on top of it, because when we get into this, the best 20 guys are going to play on opening night,” he said.

http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/rangers/tortorella_worries_about_rusty_rangers_G1aXoq0WWXCjEffrFX6CGL

Richards didn't play. He hung around New York not doing much. And why not? He got an eight million dollar check on July 1. Richards was thinking about playing in Europe after the holidays but all of the spots in Europe were already taken and the lockout was settled in early January.

Richards was coddled and protected by Torts all season until it was obvious that Richards wasn't of any help. He was dropped to the 4th line with Kreider and Asham. Richards was dropped from the line-up all together later.

The other side of the argument is the free agent market stinks and the Rangers are better off with Richards totally ignoring the huge risk of injury. The cap will be $80M in the 3-4 years so the Rangers can afford the bad contract. Wonderful thinking.

LeBrun better be wrong

@Real_ESPNLeBrun: Just my own guess at this point, but I'm thinking Rangers leaning towards NOT buying out Brad Richards. Could be wrong, but that's my guess

LeBrun better be wrong

I also lean towards buying out but only because if he gets hurt then they cant do it next yr and are screwed on the cap in the future.

If there was no worry about buying him out next yr I likely give him another shot. Lets say they go balzy and keep him well then all they can do is resign RFA's and basically have the same team.

Would Sather make a trade or two yea likely but it would not be drastic I would think

I rather get Raymond and Lapiere if AV thinks they can help him

Its stupid. Very stupid.

Keeping Richards severely limits options to improve the roster. Carries a huge risk to retain 6.6 in dead cap space for 6 years (14/15 onward).

Where does he fit in the lineup? He's a 3rd line center at-best right now. What third line center comes with a 6.6 cap hit for the next 7 seasons?

Be smart, buy him out. There are other options.

The injury risk is why I think you have to buy him out.

But the Rangers are unquestionably a better team with a 50-60 point BR next year than without.

Banking on Lindberg/Miller is extremely risky. So is ponying up for a UFA center with what they will likely cost due to lack of supply.

I could see riding with BR for one more year. Let Lindberg/Miller develop in the AHL. Buy out BR next year, let a kid step in. It may not be what I would do but at least I can understand the thinking...

Maybe they'll learn once Richards gets hurt and they're stuck with him forever. These are the rangers; never do anything right. Le sigh...

If they don't buy him out it is because they don't feel Stepan or Brassard are ready for a 1 or 2c role, cant really blame them either for thinking they might not be. Neither of them proved it over 82 games yet

And who is to say that Richards can? The only reason Richards scored at a 50-60 point pace last season is because he got far too much icetime, and he was pretty fortunate against some terrible teams at the end of the season. Sure, maybe he bounces back, but the injury risk is a big factor. They simply cant have Richards on the books past next summer. So, whats the point then? Doesnt it make much more sense to move on since they'll be moving on anyway in a years time? Par for the course here - no plan - no forward vision for this franchise from Sather.

Richards' cap hit this season is the least of my concerns. Deleting it for this season just gives Sather an opportunity to sign another mistake in his place. He'll **** that up like he always does.

Question: wouldn't we be able to buy out Richards after this upcoming season? So why wouldn't we give him another year to see if he could turn it around under AV, and then if he doesn't we buy him out following next season?

Injury concern. Injured players can'tbe bought out

probably not. I'm for the buyout, only because of the injury risk, but if this wasn't a concern, there isn't a doubt in my mind that Richards would at the very least be the 65p player he was last year, not to mention the good #s he put in post season. He scored alot of big goals last year, and made many great plays. He's getting killed and rightly so, for not staying in game shape, but BR will bounce back as a solid 2C.

It's not an easy decision. Can you honestly convince Lundqvist we're SC caliber team when we release Richards and start next season with Stephan and Brassard as our #1 and 2? good luck....
