Also told that Letang camp counter-offered with a long-term deal which would pay less than $8 M (north of $7.5 M); Pens said too high

I thought that happened with Richter, but it could be he just retired. Not sure, but I remember we traded him for something but he never played for another team
Letang was a Norris finalist and has the right to ask for that... it's about time a Pens player wanted market value.

This. It would be moronic for the Pens to not give him what he wants. Their defense is bad as it is.

Miller, DZ, 1st for Letang.

what you are thinking of is a loophole from 2 CBAs ago. teams would get draft pick compensation for losing ufas so teams would trade a pending ufa to a team for a pick, then sign that player back. so team A ends up resigning their guy plus adds a pick and team B gets a comp pick for 'losing' the ufa and gets a higher pick then they traded away.
rangers used the loophole a few times...98 they worked out a deal with nashville for the preds to pick richter in the expansion draft then 2 weeks later we signed richter. if i remember correctly there was a rule that you couldn't lose more than 1 goalie in the multiple expansion drafts so buy swinging this deal we didn't have to protect a goalie the following years
2002 we traded richter to edmonton for a comp pick then resigned him...oilers got a 3rd round pick 72nd overall in 03 for losing him, rangers got #122nd pick in 03 and took corey potter.
2003 we traded messier to sj for a pick that we used to draft callahan and then resigned him...plus we traded leetch to edmonton for markkanen & a 2004 4th round pick which was ironically traded to toronto with leetch the following year.
loophole was closed though and you no longer get compensation for losing ufas which gives the other team no incentive to make the trades...
does make for some fun trivia though...you could stump alot of people asking what nhl organizations was mike richter part of besides the rangers and how many times did the rangers trade away brian leetch
Letang 7,5 m
Fleury 5 m
Malkin 9,5 m
Crosby 8,7 m
Neal 5 m
Martin 5 m
That's a total of 40,7 m. on 6 players. They have 24 m left for the other 26 players. They have no depth which will cost them
Fleury will be gone soon. Same with Martin.
They will make it work
Why is Cammalleri crappy? He was on pace for about 50-55 points on a terrible team
Never said Kreider has more value than Perron. Said I wouldn't trade Kreider for Perron.
This and why are we talking Perron when we can get a norwegian Perron for about 1.75 mil, no asset loss?

Pens getting rid of Martin?

They have a ton of very good defense prospects. They will fill in the gaps.
$6 mil for a guy that had 2 less points then brad richards? and you ask i say crappy? get cgy to eat 1/2 his salary and he's not bad but for $6 mil? yeah he sucks as much as richards did last year

No they will not, half those cap eating guys will be hurt also any given time.
