Speculation: 2013 Offseason Thread Part III: Free Agents Suck

What's the point of using a high pick to draft a dmen. Taking the time to develop him. And then moving him? Seems very counterproductive to me.

To fill other holes? The same reason any trade is made?

Is that why we should move MDZ?

I happen to think teams over-value the "puck-mover" in today's NHL and considering Del Zotto is not all that great at it due to his slow feet, I would be interested kno what they could garner in return.

Difference with Moore and McDonagh, is they haven't hit 40 points in their careers. I would LOVE to see McD get some PP time, but anyone who's watched hockey for some time can easily identify there are dramatic differences between MDZ and McD when it comes to their offensive capabilities. Neither Moore or McD would replicate what MDZ is capable of.

McDonagh had 32 points with practically no PP time 2 years ago. Far-fetched to assume he will continue to develop?

Staal had 29 points in 77 games 3 years ago before his rash of injuries.

Stralman had 34 points in 73 games a few years ago with Columbus.

The Rangers have d-men who can put up points.

That isn't even mentioning Moore who probably has the best shot out of any d-man on the roster.

That position of strength can become a hole very, very quickly. I think people here tend to forget a very simple, and easy logic with their NHL players.

NHL dmen, are like pitchers. You can never, ever have to many. You just can't. So you guys might believe we're trading from a position of strength, but I'm not.

Not with Staal's uncertainty. Not with Girardi and Stralman nearing free-agency.

That's why they can sign someone for depth purposes?

Nash can play on the left side. As can Zucc. As far as why Nash didn't? Who knows. Torts is no longer here so we can't assume our next coach is going to follow his logic.

You questioned our depth on the left side. All I did was give you a response to who can play LW.

Nash felt more comfortable on the right side. Who can, and should are (2) different things.

Identity?

New York Lundqvists. We have the best goalie on the planet. We have a plethora of solid players offensively and defensively.

I supported Torts but his prehistoric coaching tendencies were very evident. We were a hardworking team that was physical and blocked a ton of shots. Our new coach will give us a different plan of attack but our identity doesn't have to change.

So because the Red Wings have Howard they shouldn't have a system in place? What about the Bruins with Rask?

Teams without an identity are normally lost and not on the same page. Torts tried to get this years team to be like last years with the shot blocking and defensive hockey. He didn't have the pieces.

What is their identity? Praying Hank can win this team a Cup all by himself while the other guys just skate around is not a good plan.

after seeing some videos I'm all for trying to pry Cody McLeod from COL. He's a good fighter, and he can actually play! Feel like that's hard to come by lately. I say go get him.

Something about Clarke MacArthur just screams "Rangers free agent signing".

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Good ES scorer, good possession player, left winger. I'm not sure what the problem is?

I mean I don't want to give him a 4x4 contract, but I wouldn't be opposed giving him a shorter deal until our kids mature. Not sure if that is what he is looking for though.

I meant a guy they would overpay. With the right contract, I actually think he could be a good signing. Guy can score and is a very good forechecker that can play anywhere up and down the top 3 lines.

I just don't trust this team not to overpay people on the UFA market.

I want Nystrøm here. Awesome guy, great bottom 6-er

Me too, would love that signing.

Still mad the Kings re-upped Regher.

Still really want to bring in a veteran D-man on a two year deal who can play the right side to sure up the bottom pairing. Can Ference or Clitsome play the right side? Scuderi would be another guy I'd really try to add.

Staal - G
McD - Stralman
Moore - UFA

Deal Del Zotto at the draft for a pick and a winger. Sign Nystrom. Instill youth into the lineup. Those are my off-season moves. Keep it simple.

Malkin will get a ton a money. Crosby got a 12 year deal worth $104,400,000. The last 3 years are worth a combined $9M which lowers the cap hit. His AAV in the first 9 years is almost $11M. The new CBA has 7 and 8 year contract term limits, Malkin will command $12M minimum. He will be 28 at the end of his current deal. The new contract will take him to 35 or 36. Good luck to that team. The KHL will offer him the moon. $15M? The same team which will reportedly will pay Gonchar $7M per. Say the cap goes to $67M in 14-15. 20% is the MAX. $13.4M.

The NHL doesn't have player safety disasters frequently in their league. I don't need to name them; you all are familiar. I think that alone is a convincing argument to play the rest of your career here.

I don't think MacArthur will be that overpaid (for a UFA), 2 straight 40pt (pace) seasons won't give him a big payday. But he brings a lot of positive elements at ES that wont get him dollars, but will get his team points.

It is guys like Clowe and Clarkson that will get the real overpayments.

2012-13 GVT

Derek Stepan is the 6th best forward. 3rd center behind Crosby and Toews.

Crosby
Toews
Ovechkin
Kane
Kunitz
Stepan

Stepan's agent Matt Oates will bring up these numbers with the Rangers. Stepan is worth $4M in a long term deal.

Ray Shero traded Whitney for Kunitz. He traded Goligoski for Neal and Niskanen.

Defensemen for forwards.

For some reason I don't picture being Sather too knowledgeable on his GVT.

If the Rangers want to eat some UFA years for Stepan, I think it would cost north of 4.5 per.

The more I think about it, the more I like a potential MacArthur signing. We could cement our identity as a speedy, tenacious, possession team, like the 2005-2007 Sabres with three scoring lines as Ola so eloquently described in the coach hiring thread.

Give him 2 years at 2.5-3M/year.

Hagelin-Stepan-Nash
Kreider-Brassard-Zuccarello
MacArthur-Lindberg/Miller-Callahan
Pyatt/Powe-Boyle-Dorsett

Three lines that can score, a lot of fast, feisty players. The 2nd line may lack a legit forechecker, but Kreider could (should) be able to become a good one with his size and skating. Zucc has a great intesity to his game, but he might be a tad too small to be the prime FC threat on a line. Otherwise switch Kreider and McA.

No more big, lumbering, "good along the boards" players that are too slow to actually enter any battles along the boards.

McD-G
Staal-Strålman
Moore-MDZ

At least one good PMD per pairing.

I'm definitely not advocating hiring Ruff, but I wouldn't mind trying to emulate those Sabres teams regardless of the chosen coach.

And the bottom of that article says this about the coming buyout period:

Speaking of compliance buyouts, it was rumored the Detroit Red Wings might use one of theirs to shed the remaining seven years and $22.5 million of winger Johan Franzen's contract.

Not true, according to Wings GM Ken Holland, dismissing such talk as “crazy speculation,†citing the importance of Franzen's offensive contributions.

Mlive.com's Ansar Khan speculates their buyout candidates could be Mikael Samuelsson and Todd Bertuzzi, who were injured for most of this season. As long as they're healthy by the compliance buyout period (48 hours following the Stanley Cup Final to July 4), either or both could receive buyouts.

One has to assume, they HAVE to move them now, no?
