I think people will work with him to transition back to a defender. His toolset is just so valuable at that position. Righty with a cannon of a shot, and the mobility to fire off one-timers at will. He also loves to hit, but was always taking himself out of coverage to crush someone.

I like him as a defenseman, as well. What was the deal with him before? Why didn't we sign him?

Me questioning if the team gets complacent knowing Hank is there doesn't mean I think he's "too good". I think the team uses him as a crutch sometimes, but you're reading way too far into that.

You may be right that they use him as a crutch. Getting rid of the best goalie on the planet is no anwser to that either way. It's the players job to do what they are paid to do, and the coaches to motivate them to do so.

For us to take the next step we need a solid top 6 which means Hags and Cally are on the third line (hopefully around Lindberg). If that is the case then we have four guys for the top 6 and one of them (Kreider) is unproven. But I'm willing to take a chance on him. So, we have Step, Brass and Nash. Zuke is a tweaner like Cally. So, we need a first line LW. Clowe if resigned is not that guy. How do we get that guy?

With McD, Staal and Moore on the left side, MDZ is trade bait. However, he's not getting that guy alone. So, I say we add either Boyle or Miller to get that guy. If that isn't enough, then another prospect (not McI). Maybe Hrivik. I'm not sure who's available or will be so I'm not proposing a player. But we need a top line LW and if Boyle is dealt then Miller slots in behind Step, Brass and either Lindberg or Richards at center.

If Hank puts a strangle hold on the Ranger an gets the max for 8 years he better be prepared for a lot more games where if he gives up 2 or more goals we lose. If he really wants to win he gets a 3 year extension at his currently salary and goes from there. I know he won't because its all about the money. Also I think the Rangers should think twice about giving him that as we are not that close to winning a championship anyway and by the time Hank is 35 and you have not won anything then where do you go.

I agree that Cally needs to be playing in a largely defensive role on the third line. Thats his game, thats where he is going to excel.

The Rangers are forcing him into a top 6 role and I don't think it will work with the types of players occupying that role currently.

Hags, is still a bit of a question mark on whether he can play in a top 6 role. I am pretty sure he can't play effectively on a top line consistently. But I do think he has the potential to be a consistent second line contributor. His main issue is that he has to work on his puck control. He loses the puck too easily, and is a bit panicky at times. I think that will improve as he develops. Cally, on the hand, I think we have seen what we are going to get with him.

They have a plethora of young players who should be pushing for spots in the next couple of years and not a lot of spots for them to take. There will be moves.

Definitely going to be an active summer. with a full camp/preseason/full season the turnover isn't going to be nearly an issue. Regardless, this roster needs help.

Yeah, pretty much. With the type of players, Cally can play as a second liner. But, currently, I just don't see it.

I agree, this summer is going to be crazy. I just hope Ranger fans temper their expectations. Next year could very well be a transitional year.

We'll all know better regarding who can be snagged before the draft. Guys like Thomas Vanek, Evander Kane, Max Pacioretty would be the level of player we need. Can we get Vanek with MDZ, Boyle +?

You're probably right, but what we really need to do is find this summers "Scheen-for-JVR" deal.

He can play on any line. However, at ES he is a 2nd/3rd line tweener. If he is in the top 6 we are fine. But if he's is our 3rd most offensively talented right wing, we are in good shape. That is my hope.

I think Hank wants a Cup... badly. The question becomes where he thinks he'll get it? If he thinks he can win in NY (and we know he wants to in NY) then he should be willing to take a minimal raise & not cripple the team with an even more rid contract.

I'm not saying he wouldn't be worth it, but in order for the team to succeed he'll need to be reasonable.

I think he is greedy and. Real scum buckt if he leaves just for money.. He is the king in ny and his salery is very fair for a goalie who is stellar in regular season and very so so in playoffs. He is very average in the playoffs face the facts

Assuming we buy out Richards, and preferebly resigning Clowe, in a perfect world, we do the following:

1. Get a right shooting PMD;

2. Aquite a center with playmaking ability through trade (neither Stepan nor Brassard can run a PP by themselves),

3. Sign a vet bought-out with a goal-scoring touch.

Or, switch the object in 2&3 mutatis mutandis (IE sign a bought out playmaker and trade for a player with a shot). Bottom line, three new players. There is where Slats gotta draw a line.

There is no need to have 16 capable forwards and 9 D's in the NHL, so we can give up a fair amount of bodies too, to ensure we get a proper return. I also want alot of spots open for kids.

I am making up this as I write, but maybe something like this:
*Trade Carl Hagelin for David Rundblad.
*Trade MDZ and Kreider for Granlund/Yakubov.
*Sign a bought out Dany Heatly.
*Trade/dump Asham, Pyatt, Powe, Strålman (see Rundblad + need for McIlrath enforcement (honeymoon is over, we need him)) for picks and prospects.

I don't think Dany Heatley will be bought out. He has one more year left and Minnesota is already spending big money above the cap with the Suter and Parise contracts.

Danny Briere would be ideal, IMO.

Hagelin for Rundblad makes me feel
