Since we lack a 1st round pick...

If we were now to snag a PPQB D in Nate Schmidt, a goalie (Joacim Eriksson??) and another fwd (maybe Petr Straka or Kellan Lain) - we could call it a helluva day with the prospect signings.
Fills up some holes in the organisation.
Hell, maybe we can draft Miles Bell as well... and Connor Hurley too.

I don't think we have enough contract space. But while we're at it, why not just tank and trade everyone for 1sts and pick MacKinnon, Jones, and all the rest.

Nate Schmidt -- From corresponding with his advisor today, everything is too early and fresh after today's loss. They will talk over the weekend about his future.

In terms of the Wild, yes, the Wild has interest, but so should many teams and know this: I do get the sense from talking to people that Schmidt may look to avoid playing at home.

Schmidt will also have to be smart and analyze each team's depth chart to see where he'd fit if he chooses to leave school and where there's a clear route eventually to the NHL.

You don't want to get trapped behind six cemented defensemen and a horde of prospects. Lots of teams need good, young D (especially in the East), not just the Wild. Also, I think most teams will view Schmidt as somebody who needs time in the minors to grow. NHL scouts feel he has certain qualities that are very NHL ready -- one, namely, his shot -- but other things that must be groomed in the minors.

As you know, from covering him during the lockout, I'm a big fan. I think he's a quality player, terrific kid and a GREAT quote. But if you're a Wild fan, I wouldn't get your hopes up.

As Nate Schmidt’s defensive partner most of this season, Brady Skjei figured he knew his Gophers teammate pretty well. It surprised him, then, when Schmidt mentioned he had played forward in some games during a difficult freshman year.

Skjei, a rookie, has soaked up so much knowledge from his junior mentor that he found it hard to believe that Schmidt had not always been a mainstay of the Gophers’ defensive corps. Schmidt still finds it a little hard to believe where he is now, considering his rocky start.

“I told Brady, ‘Those were the dark days of my career,’ ’’ said Schmidt, a first-team all-WCHA pick and the highest-scoring defenseman in the league. “That made what I’m doing now feel that much better. I know how hard it was to get here.’’

Canucks signed Lain.

I say we focus on Schmidt and Eriah Hayes.

Agreed, but Lain signed with VAN. I'd like to grab Eriksson and Straka is a steal IMO. Myles Bell is a definite in the draft whether its the Rangers or not. From NCAA I'd pick up goalie Olkinoura who is now available with the loss to UNH yesterday.

Like I asked before, does anyone see a potential pick up on the Quinnipiac squad besides Hartzell?

Are there anyone else worth noting from Juniors/Europe/NCAA?

Safe to assume that most of our picks, if not all but 1, will be forwards/goalies this draft.

I wouldn't say that. Beyond McIlrath and Skjei, I cringe when I see our defensive prospect depth. I do, however, hope we gamble on a boom/bust offensive defenseman with skill

Agreed. That's why we signed Allen & possibly Hughes (insert sarcasm here). It's going to be defense first again for the Rangers, but you know they might even "pick the best one available" :sarcasm:. They'll pick a goalie somewhere in the mid to late rounds (say 4th to 7th). Unless we get a 1st this year, look for more depth players like they normally pick.

As for that offensive d-man you & I & a lot of other people want to have...... :dunno:. We'll see what happens.

Battle of FA goalies Milner & Grosenick now!! :)

Edit: the Union team moves on in a 5-1 victory. Great game by Grosenick. Good luck to you Milner.

i want Alex Gudbranson in the 2013 draft???? solid defensive dman... if anything like his brother it cant hurt.. 2ed or 3rd round pick??

He's a good pick for a 3rd rounder

Sather seems to like bloodlines from past.. maybe Sather takes a risk.. i hope a goalie during the draft either by draft or 20-22 goalie prospect that a team might move that has depth.. Blues maybe?? they have 4 goalies..

Would love Lundstrom!!!

Edit: and they have a lot of goalies, not just 4 ;)

The writing was on the wall in regards to signing Schmidt.

And that writing was four first names: Connor Allen Tom Hughes

You have no idea what Nate Schmidt is thinking; If he couldn't beat out Allen and Hughes would you want him on NYR, because your post is insinuating exactly that. I prefer to think Slats knew he had no shot at either Sustr or Schmidt and signed who he hopes will work out best for NY. FA NCAA Dmen are not exactly flocking to NY w/Staal, Giradi, DZ, McD manning the top 4 jobs
