This is what I wrote about Donnay, from the previous iteration of this thread:

Other than being a stick, one knock on him was his skating. From reading what Erie fans have had to say about him this year, it sounds like he has come along way in that regard. He also seems to have become a little more physical and developed a bit of a mean streak. "Most Improved Player" is a something that seems to be pretty frequently associated with him. His shot is fine, pretty heavy as you'd expect from a guy that big. It's not quick though, and he's not much of a passer. That's not going to be his game. I've only seen him a handful of times this year (and really I just wanted to see McDavid and the kid Washington drafted), so take my scouting for what it's worth.

His last draft year, he was ranked like 110th or something among North American skaters (EDIT: 122nd in 2012). So, he was considered by many to be a mid-to-late round project pick. "You can't teach 6'7"," as they say. If he continues to fill out (he was listed at 170 when we signed him), then he has a decent chance to make it as a bottom pairing defender.

It's unclear, to me anyway, as to whether he'll go pro next year or head back to Erie for an over-age season.

He's an interesting player. The epitome of a project when he was signed. Still a long shot to make it, but his game has improved significantly. He's definitely in the Noreau/Hughes/Graves conversation in terms of developmental defensive prospects. I like him a little more than Hughes and Noreau, not quite as much as Graves. It's true, Graves' skill set is already somewhat developed, and that's what lead him to be drafted rather than undrafted like Donnay. Pretty much every guy picked in the mid-to-late rounds is a project to some degree, though, and Graves is no different. I think he's further along in his development (respective to his age) than Donnay or Noreau, but he still has plenty of work left to do.

I think Noreau's skill set is pretty clearly defined--he's a big, extremely physical, viciously tough defenseman who may not be mobile enough to succeed as a pro. His role is defined, it's just a matter of whether or not he'll be able to excel at it enough to make it. Remember, Noreau had a great year in Baie-Comeau last season, and garnered much of the same praise as we're seeing Graves receive this year.

I like him because he has great size (around 220-230 lbs), and playing both offense and defense comes really naturally for him. Great one-timer slapper etc.

But his lack of jump and intensity in his game is holding him back. He is still really young, and the level he plays at is pretty dynamic. Sometimes he gets into trouble.

The key for him would have been to take a big step this season, instead he was hurt the entire off season and missed the entire pre season and first month or so of the regular season. That's showing.

I would love to be able to give him a little more time, because there is a lot of hockey in him, but I am not sure we afford that.

Could we pay him to switch identity with his younger brother? Pay Calle (and Rasmus to convince him as well) a few million to turn into "Rasmus Andersson" who is eligible for the 2015(?) draft, while "Calle Andersson" suddenly develops very well - almost as if he was a few years younger.

The Rangers have plenty of contract spots after this season. I think Andersson, if he displays an interest in coming to North America, will get one. He has great tools. I think it's worth the risk.

That's a testament to Minnesota's defense. (Credit also should go to assistant head coach Mike Guentzel.) Sophomores Mike Reilly (Columbus Blue Jackets) and Brady Skjei (New York Rangers) have developed throughout the year - both also put on 10-15 lbs of muscle in the offseason - to the point where the duo are two of the better blue liners in the college ranks.

Reilly, this year's Big Ten Defenseman of the Year, is second on the Gophers in points with 32. Beyond the box score, he is capable of starting and leading a rush or being a power play quarterback. His chemistry with junior Sam Warning has led to a half-dozen goals on both ends. Skjei, meanwhile, is the defensive defenseman of the pair (which actually isn't a pair - they don't play together).

That would be good by itself, but what has really put the two on a different level lately is the multi-dimensional growth. Reilly has become a better defensive defenseman, no longer relying on his partner to cover his tracks. Skjei lately has also been growing into a two-way D, taking the green light, scoring with 3 of his 6 goals happening against Michigan in March, and even skating below the net and through the offensive zone to find a play.

Seniors Parenteau and Holl have taken on a role of support for their defensive partners and standout sophomores Mike Reilly and Skjei. Junior defenseman Ben Marshall has stepped into a role of playing right and left defense with the Gophers freshmen defensemen, Michael Brodzinski and Jake Bischoff.

The unselfish group effort allows each of the seven defensemen to excel at what he does best, associate head coach Mike Guentzel said.

Noreau has not been particularly vicious in his first pro season. 6 fights and around 90 penalty minutes. Early on in the year there was talk that he might go back to juniors--wasn't quite ready to be a pro. He seems to have made steady improvement this year. Not a lot of points but a very good +/- in Greenville. What he really needs to work on is skating--particularly maneuverability. It will take him a while to become an NHL player and that's an if--definitely no guarantees. There are a number of d-men in the NHL though who toiled for quite a while in the minors before they finally made it--a comparison for him might be someone like Matt Carkner or the somewhat smaller Deryk Engelland.

I think he's proven this year though that he can play his position fairly well at the ECHL level. He had a handful of AHL games and he wasn't a disaster. Hopefully he'll be able to make it to the AHL level next year or at least split time between the two leagues. Hartford called up Bretton Stamler from Greenville about half way through this year and he never went back. Stamler is already 26. He'd never played in the AHL before. He wasn't tearing up the ECHL by any means but he's a big physical player--kind of became Bickel's replacement.

Donnay and Erie won last night. They swept Sault Ste. Marie and move on to the Western Conference Finals, where they'll face the winner of the Guelph-London series (Guelph is up 2-1). If it's Guelph, Donnay will have his hands full. The Storm has Kirby Rychel, Jason Dickinson, Tyler Bertuzzi, Scott Kosmachuk, Matt Finn and some other high NHL draft picks. Another year of school wouldn't hurt Brady Skjei. McDonagh and Shattenkirk played 3 years of college hockey. They didn't need much AHL time after turning pro. BU won in Shattenkirk's sophomore year and he returned for his junior year.

another lefty dman. lots to like about his kids upside.

skjei should stay another year and have a good junior season. with his skating and simple dfirst play, i like him as a 3rd pair guy/call up after his season ends next year.

i really see no reason for him to go to hartford at all. physically hes big, he skates beautifully, makes good reads and understands the game blueline in. he thinks a simple d first game and hes played/will play alot of key minutes in big games.

hes way beyond the path that mcilrath had to take and hes the better prospect easily.

The Rangers have plenty of contract spots after this season. I think Andersson, if he displays an interest in coming to North America, will get one. He has great tools. I think it's worth the risk.

we have a huge opportunity for an offensive guy to come in and grab a spot. we literally have no one who seems to be able to lock that down.

staal, girardi and mcd are locks. stral and kleiner look solid. if stralman walks- and i dont agree with letting him walk, we have options and i guess klein moves into 2nd pair minutes.

moore and diaz are playing for a spot right now. one of those guys is toast.

i still dont like our lack of size on the blue line. too many 6'1 200 lb guys. i do love the youth of our blueline however.

mcilrath would address that size issue if he can play at an nhl pace.

staal, girardi and mcd are locks. stral and kleiner look solid. if stralman walks- and i dont agree with letting him walk, we have options and i guess klein moves into 2nd pair minutes.

moore and diaz are playing for a spot right now. one of those guys is toast.

I agree, I don't necessarily agree that McIlrath won't be ready to start next year but if there is 1 spot open, it wouldn't surprise me to see Allen grab that spot. McI isn't that far off.

Agreed. I think he would be playing on a few teams already this year

Noreau has not been particularly vicious in his first pro season. 6 fights and around 90 penalty minutes. Early on in the year there was talk that he might go back to juniors--wasn't quite ready to be a pro. He seems to have made steady improvement this year. Not a lot of points but a very good +/- in Greenville. What he really needs to work on is skating--particularly maneuverability. It will take him a while to become an NHL player and that's an if--definitely no guarantees. There are a number of d-men in the NHL though who toiled for quite a while in the minors before they finally made it--a comparison for him might be someone like Matt Carkner or the somewhat smaller Deryk Engelland.

I think he's proven this year though that he can play his position fairly well at the ECHL level. He had a handful of AHL games and he wasn't a disaster. Hopefully he'll be able to make it to the AHL level next year or at least split time between the two leagues. Hartford called up Bretton Stamler from Greenville about half way through this year and he never went back. Stamler is already 26. He'd never played in the AHL before. He wasn't tearing up the ECHL by any means but he's a big physical player--kind of became Bickel's replacement.

I think it was a smart move to keep Noreau in Greenville for the entire year. Since the short cameo in Hartford he's played in every game
and put up some points. I think the lack of fights is because of not finding many takers. Greenville games get pretty nasty but Noreau is rarely one of the combatants.

Hopefully, he's made some good progress with the skating and can carve out a spot on a 3rd pair down the road. Taking a shot with projects like this can't hurt.

A player signing an ELC at 21 needs 3 years of experience to be arbitration eligible. 20 needs 4. If the Rangers sign Skjei next week,he would need 4 years to be arg eligible. One factor. Stepan needed 4. 3 year ELC. Bridge contract. McDonagh needed 3. Big contract as a 2nd contract. He earned that 2nd contract but if the Rangers had some leverage on him,they could have forced him to take a 2 year deal like Stepan.

Lucia recruited more 3 and 4 year college players. He recruited Johnson and Kessel who were one year players. Okposo didn't finish his sophomore year. One and done. Bjugstad was a first rounder. He also stayed in school for his junior year to win after losing to BC in 2012. He stayed 3 years. Skjei is another first rounder.

At the very least most guys probably need to get acclimated to the speed difference and checking difference in the AHL first. It'd be hard for him to be a poorer decision maker than J Moore frequently is though so maybe he'll be fine jumping into those kinds of minutes
