Who are these "people"? I have not seen anyone call for a goon who can't play.

No need to name names, but if you were in the discussion a few days ago, you would have seen quite a few people clamoring for a roster spot to go to Mashinter....who is a goon.

Guys like Asham/Dorsett are what this league is moving towards and almost completely, sans a few guys (Orr, Mclaren, Parros).

Gotta disagree with you there
Guy is big, a bit slow, not exactly Kent nilsson with the puck and quite a fighter
But hardly a goon

Fast usually wears #s in the teens. He wore 14 at the WJCs if memory serves me right.

He wore 12 last year in his brief practices with the Rangers, and he wore 17 with the Whale.

31 is fine for now. Once he gets established, he can take back 12 or any number he wants.

I REALLY hope AV gives him PP time. He's too good a passer not to get a look and is very confident with the puck.

I'd really prefer Miller center that line and Boyle move down to 4th line LW.

Mashinter is not a goon. He is closer in the mold of a Prust or Thornton than an Orr or Scott.

He is a bit too hot-headed though. The LA game showed that. Sure it is nice to defend a team mate, but sometimes it is inappropriate. I think he's too much of a liability in that regard. Double minors are no fun to PK.

Very good post. People do not seem to understand that having a tough guy dressed is a complete detriment if he can't play. I.e. Mashinter

I think he was trying to effect the game. Young players tend to be that way. Dubinsky used to do the same thing.

Probably thought he had to step up physically to try and grab one of the last spots. If anything, he's not hot-headed enough. Was blasted around here for not doing anything with his fists in last year's 4 game cameo. He's hardly a goon.

Am I the only one that thought Haley should be playing over Pyatt? People always say that a 4th liner is not going to make a difference. I agree with that statement somewhat but only in terms of points. Where a 4th liner can make a difference is in energy, momentum, home town crowd involvement or play a role like enforcer, faceoff, PK specialist...ect

Neither Pyatt or Haley were / are going to put up numbers so what it really boils down to is what kind of role player do we most need? A PK role player or a high energy / agitator. Considering how well this team responded to players like Dubi, Avery, Prust added with the fact that we supposedly have the best goalie in the league and some of the best D men. I think the more logical and beneficial choice would have been to keep Haley up and do whatever with Pyatt. I don't think a lot of people see this as very important to the team this year...but I really do. Heart and determination were the Rangers biggest problems last year.

I think Haley would be a useful piece in the lineup, but Pyatt is the better overall player. Perhaps when the roster shakes out in a couple months we might see a guy like Pyatt dealt and Haley called up.

Pyatt hadn't killed any (as in none at all) penalties for at least the last two full seasons. AV was using him in training camp in that role but it remains to be seen how capable he is going to be at that. With that said--with Pyatt's inconsistent often absent offense and unremarkable physical presence I'm not sure I would call him a better overall player. He's a vet with some history and that along with having good size works in his favor. I wouldn't call him a very energetic player and if he's on your 4th line and you want energy out of it--good luck with that. Personally I'd rather see Haley instead of Pyatt as well.

But he's been a PK guy most of his career and I struggled to define who he is cause' he's really nothing, hes one of the most invisible players on the ice at any given time.

Haley is pretty good, but he takes way too many penalties which makes him a real detriment to the team.

For a fourth liner, not taking more penalties than you draw is a very significant factor.

You can go on to NHL.com and track any player you like backwards throughout his career to see how much actual pk or pwp time they've played over the course of any given season. Pyatt has not been pk'ing for some time.

Yes coyotes and rangers haven't used him for PKs when he left Vancouver he was averaging over 2 mins a game TOI PK. This favors the point in my OP more so...if he isn't a role player or a worthwhile balanced player then he really shouldn't be here. I'd rather see a guy that plays with his heart on his sleeve because that stuff is contagious. It only take ones big hit to get the fans into the game and change the outcome on the score board. Pyatt, at his age doesn't have much interest in using his size. Haley bangs at 5'11" because he is hungry to crack the lineup.

Maybe I just feel this way because the tikkanens, barnabys, averys, haleys are some of my favorite types of players. I might be slanted.

These guys drew a ton of penalties and potted quite a few points as well. Haley just takes penalties, and apart from one amazing highlight-reel goal hasn't contributed to anything offensively in his NHL career.

I mean even Avery at the end of his career when he was a "marked man" that got "called for everything", drew a lot more penalties than he took.

I know Torts said it wasn't personal when he demoted Avery, but it was. The guy was still an effective player.
