bobbop spoke to Beukeboom and he said McIlrath is ready for play for the Rangers next season.

This would make things interesting. I realize it has been a long time since the preseason games he played, and that that was really his first real taste of the big show (sort of)... but its hard to believe with how abysmal he looked in those games. Just completely out of his element and over his head. And that was just preseason. He better have taken some huge steps since then if this is actually being considered a realistic option.

I would be shocked if Boyle is here next season. I always thought he would end up in Boston but he would not crack the top 9 up there either. He could always go to NJ, where he could be the #1 or 2 center.

Boyle a #1 center? Really? Our team must be great then :)

All of that can quickly go out the window when you have a family and a future to think about. Boyle's a sharp guy and I'm sure he'll find work after hockey, but guys like him need to chase the money when they have the chance. They need to provide for the long-term.

I'm sure some team is looking at his 20 goal year and saying "If we can just put the right players on his wings.." while they open up the checkbook.

Oh I totally agree that some teams will be prepared to offer him more money than we will. I just think he'll be one of the guys that elects to stay. Whether we overpay for him to do it or what not, I don't know.

I think him publicly saying he wants more of a responsibility while knowing that the Rangers have no intention of doing that will eventually lead to a higher contract offer by them to stay. He's playing the game. I truly believe he wants to stay. I hope he keeps to his word. Respect him as a player and think he's vital to our success.

I think D. Moore is the more likely of the two to go for greener pastures.

Other than his toughness/fighting ability i still dont see why many people love Mcilrath. I think we can all agree he was a MAJOR reach at 10 in the draft. I mean guys like kreider and miller had tehir struggled but they also showed flashes of their potential. Mcilrath's ceiling seems to be a 3rd pair d-man which is ok i guess but im not sure if he can stick

He's got a cool name.....:dunno:

I'm thinking ahead to our first game vs Montreal. I. want. Prust. He destroyed the reputation of Kreider and talked smack that led directly to Stepan getting mugged. I really hate him now.

What do you mean he destroyed the reputation of Kreider?

Because players like him with his combination of size, strength, and rugged ability, are ultra-rare these days, and can be incredibly valuable in the modern NHL. Intimidation in the NHL is a real thing, the Kings won the stanley cup in the crease. King, Carter, all came to the crease and no one could do a damn thing about it.

His ceiling is not that of a third pair d-man. Second pairing playing 20+ minutes a game with about 17 at ES. He definitely showed flashes of potential this year, you clearly didn't watch him.

You may be right about his ceiling, but his floor is that he's never an NHL regular - which would be rough being drafted #10 overall.

I'm rooting for the kid.

Actually i did watch him. Im not bashing the guy I actually like Mcilrath. He showed some flashes in the AHL but i dont think he is close to being a reliable NHL regular YET. All i am saying is that he was a project and projects take longer. Point is maybe he does suprise and becomes a good d-man but there is also a good chance he wont make it. Right Now id say Allen is much more ready at least to be a 3rd pair d-man

It's not like he'd be the 1st player to never make the NHL drafted in the top 10.

To me, hard decisions need to be made. Even if everyone is resigned, that is not good enough. The team, as constituted, was not nearly good enough against the Kings. The Rangers looked like a middle weight fighting a heavyweight. They need an infusion of size and attitude. They cannot continue to ice the mighty mites.

That said, there is a cap. Which means decisions to be made. Even with the buyout of Richards, they are still squeezed and cannot make foolish decisions. Couple that with the need to be better and Jackass can have his hands full. Which is why they really need to look at the roster and figure out who is not only a part of the solution, but who fits in the best. Staal will need to be given a top pairing defenseman's contract. Zucc will need to be resigned. They need to add size.

Two players that will probably make the same amount of money is Stralman and Brassard, probably in a similar $4.5m range. I would resign Stralman and let go of Brassard if I HAD to make a choice. I would also let Pouilliot go. And Moore. Extend Staal. Sign Zucc. Resign Boyle. Then utilize Hagellin as a chip/part of a trade to bring in a younger, bigger center than what the Rangers currently have. Boyle and Moore do not belong on the same team. No team needs 2 4th line centers. I would also resign Carcillo.

People have their favorites and their own views. I am sure that there were Boston fans who did not want to let Kessel or Sequin go. But those were tough decisions that needed to be made and they used to help build a contender that can play with anyone in the league.

The Rangers do not need to build a team that will compete with Montreal. The Rangers need to build a team that will compete with Boston. With LA. With San Jose. With Chicago. With Anaheim. Results may not come in year one, but they can come fairly quickly. And with Henke still in goal.

So you want to trade 2 center man to make our already horrific center depth even worse? Who do you expect to replace those players?

Fact is this team needs a small injection of size and some center skill and were nearly there. A puck moving defenseman would be a bonus too

And take away our fastest guy in Hagelin who made things happen all season and in the playoffs.

There maybe a situation where Stalzy and Boyle walks and Staal is traded.

Yes tough decsions have to be made, but wasn't Kessel holding out, or wanted to est FA?

I don't think breaking up the most consistent line in Zucc, Brass and Poo is the way to go. Poo and Moore are going to cost the least and give the same if not better performance next season. I think 2 year deals for each one at reasonable raises will get it done.

2 years $3 million for Moore, 2 years $5 million for poo.

It's not like he'd be the 1st player to never make the NHL drafted in the top 10.
True but i think people are being pretty fair evaluating him so far. Like you said shown some flashes in the minors but hasnt really been great yet. I love his toughness/fighting ability but he needs to be better skillwise if you have him as a 2nd pair d-man eventually

Your post is fair, but you are comparing a seventh round draft pick (Stralman) with a #10 overall draft pick (McIlrath). There are different expectations at those levels.

Fans are naturally going to compare McIlrath with whoever else we could have drafted at the time, especially since some of those players are already becoming big contributors. We don't get many top ten draft selections, and we were hoping to make the most of it.

That all said, I hope McIlrath at some point does come in and prove he was a good selection at #10.

And people are more concerned where he was picked than how he will end up. His game is physical. He needs the tools to play it. There is no short cut to that. In order to physically dominate, you need to be physically dominant. This isnt the WHL. Its not a bunch of highschool aged kids. These are some of the best athletes in the world. Shame on the kid for not being ready to kick their ***** in four years. There is no other way than physically developing and learning the game.
