so the Rangers helped the Whale without making a trade for their AHL team by sending down Kreider and Miller... good job by Sather

Long term the best move is for Miller and Kreider to get big minutes with the Whale and learn the game. If yesterdays moves do nothing more than help that, it will be a net gain for the franchise.

I'm expecting more of course.

In any event, Kreider and Miller will be NHLers for a long time. The development time they get with the Whale could really shape the rest of their career. Big upside or mediocre. A lot at stake for these two. Very important they get the time to learn the game the right way.

What is the status of Dylan McIlrath?

You don't hear too much about him anymore....how is he doing with the Whale? I know he missed some time early but now he's back, and stats don't tell you anything about a guy who plays his style of game.

Where does he stand? Is he still a valued prospect? Will he be the guy we thought we drafted at any point?

Roman Hamrlik is NOT an NHL caliber defenseman at this point, and we're one blocked shot by the wrong body part of a d-man from putting him back in the lineup...scary.

Hard to imagine McIlrath could actually play worse at this stage than Hamrlik played...but I understand we would not want to stunt McIlrath's development...assuming at this stage he's still developing.

I have it on good authority, from someone who follows the Whale religiously, that McIlrath will never be more than a 5/6 fighting defenseman. I'd like to disagree, as me and this fellow generally disagree on many things regarding the Rangers, but I have no basis to stand on, I haven't seen McIlrath play in a very long time.

Judging by what I'm told, and what I read here, I think he'll be given a shot in camp next season to compete, but will ultimately start the season in the AHL. I think the 13/14 season will see McIlrath get a call up or two for a cup of coffee at the NHL level. It will be the 14/15 season that sees McIlrath inserted into the Rangers top-6 as an NHL regular.

If the above scenario plays out, that is VERY disappointing, IMHO, for a #1 pick. But, defensemen surely do take longer to progress than forwards, especially those that specialize in the stay-at-home game.

With the #10 pick in the 2010 draft, the Rangers filled an organizational need that was empty since Beuk left. I have full confidence in McIlrath becoming a mean SOB at the NHL level who doesn't let anyone get near Lundqvist, and if they try to, they'll pay the price.

I try not to wade into these things, and I have no idea whether McIlrath will make it or not, but your source writing the kid off based on less than 1/2 a season of his first pro year - when he joined the team almost halfway through the season coming off a significant injury, no less - is pretty ridiculous, no?

I have seen lots of games this year, and McIlrath is always the player I'm most focused on. I have to disagree with your buddy's assertion, and disagree vehemently. McIlrath absolutely has the ability and head to play solid second pairing minutes as a bruising, crease-clearing bad-ass. His positioning, gap control and skating have improved leaps and bounds since he was drafted. His first pass is solid and he's learning when to join the rush and when to pinch. Dylan is absolutely on the right path, from my viewings.

Maybe he does end up as a five/six tough guy, and nothing more. I think that's his NHL floor. I can't understand why anyone that has watched him over the past few years would think that he's done developing though, or caps at bottom pair goon. He has the potential to be a very good player.

And for Jersey Girl--there's been a lot of analysis of McIlrath in this thread. Actually, the first post of this thread iteration is me discussing improvement that I've seen (because that SOB Bluenote kept prodding me ;)). Beacon and I believe Jarkko Immonen have gone into it as well.

To add: I hated the McIlrath pick and was never his biggest fan. I'm not wearing my Rangers-tinted glasses, either. It's my honest assessment.

Does the AHL only play on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays? Seems like it.

I have a good feeling about Fast(h). Also, someone tell us how his name is spelled on the jersey.

I'm not comparing McIlrath to Chara in any way other than take a look at Chara's numbers pre 25 years old and his career 25 and older. McIlrath is a young guy who has missed quite a bit of time with an injury and was drafted with the idea that he'd take 2-3 years to get to the NHL at a minimum. Some projects just take a little longer, but this guy will payoff down the road.

You get the odd Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday game, but yeah the bulk are on the weekends.

Also, great news on Hrivik.

You can't have it both ways, either you are comparing him to Chara IN SOME WAY or you're not. Which is it?

Ex: "Jim Pavese had no points before 25 yrs old, then look after 25 yrs old - no points. I'm not comparing him to Pavese buuuuuuuut......."

If I write the scouting report on MCI one more time, I will get an infraction from the mods for repetitive posts. It's on almost every page of this thread. Please review this thread before posting the question that is repeatedly posted.

When are the Whale playing next? Hopefully Jesper makes his pro debut soon.

Tonight against the very good Spring team, which would be a good test. They are well-rested (only 2 games in the last 10 days or so) and have received a very significant boost up front by getting Kreider, Fast and Hrivik. Let's see if this team can compete for the Calder Cup.

With the addition of Kreider, Hrivik and Fast, where does he play? The team has to make tough decisions on better forwards than him. He's not a bad AHLer, but this team is now loaded with top-6 AHL forwards.

Seriously, I wouldnt be taking that person very serious at all.

It will be spelled "FAST".

Is he confirmed he is playing tonight?

Pack added Fast, Miller, Kreider and getting Hrivík back on offense, really makes them stronger.

Jeez...exaggerate much? Every page? :shakehead

I had to go back to page 15 before I saw you give anything resembling a scouting report on McIlrath. If something else is there and I missed it...it's too hard to find.

If it makes you feel any better, the next time I ask a question about anything pretend I'm not talking to you...there are plenty of people who can answer a simple question without resorting to middle school drama.
