everyone said the same thing about the Marlins and Angels last year and look how that ended up.

They're saying the same thing about the Angels this year lol. I don't think any serious baseball guys had the Marlins as a World Series contender. A playoff contender, perhaps but the NL East was always going to be a tough nut to crack with Atlanta-Philly and that was before the Nats bubbled up.

Pretty amazing that the Jays went from about a 100/1 chance of winning the World Series to being the favourites at 8/1 and they only made one noteworthy free agent signing. AA has to be the best GM in the league if they live up to expectations.

For fans of the Blue Jays, it's just a breath of fresh air and to finally be able to say that "they might" compete for the division title is already a massive bonus... something they couldn't say for close to 15 years now.

Jays didn't sign a bunch of players to large contracts, they got most of them via trades. So they aren't exactly doing what the Sox and Marlins did.

What difference does whether they were traded for or signed as FAs make? They took on money and they are now responsible for paying that money to those players...

They still have the high expectations after trading for so many big name players. Doesn't matter how they were acquired, although the purist in me appreciates Anthopoulous's wheeling and dealing as opposed to the massive spending the Dodgers are doing.

The Rays and most recently the O's have been names to be reckoned with coming out of the AL East along with the Yanks - the Sox haven't been in the playoffs in 3 years, they haven't been a threat at all recently - you're talking about the best division in the league, where this coming season each team is capable of winning 80+ games

Look at the Dodgers, Cubs and even the Angels in recent years, where did there big payrolls lead them.

So no, the Yankees aren't good only because of their payroll. They're good because they're a world class franchise that continuously pumps out talent.

Over the last few years, the Rays have been setting the bar for small market clubs. Although I wonder if they would have gotten a title had they drafted Buster Posey #1 in 2008 instead of high school SS Tim Beckham.

Whole lot of nothing going on with the Padres. Mild reason for optimism as they closed the season 42-33 after the All Star Break. But it still looks like the ownership is still getting sorted out. At least they're moving the fences in this year.
