With the junior season a few weeks in now, maybe we can start considering getting this thread going. It was great idea for last year's draft, and i think every year there turns out to be more and more information on players.

I like the way it's shaping up.

Seguin, Hall, Fowler, and Kabanov all look like special talents who could help turn a team around.

Seems to me like the OHL has quite a bit of talent in this years draft, WHL not as much as usual. Qmjhl has had better years, but Kabanov is a good import for them. Moncton features a pair of top 10 picks.

Russians are making a strong bid in the 2010 draft with 3-4 guys who could go 1st round. Countries like Sweden, slovakia, czech don't look as strong this year. Finland has a few good ones also who could go early.

2010 is looking like it may not be as deep as a whole compared to 2009, but I think the first 2 rounds may be stronger this year.

2010 is deeper in the OHL by a mile compared to 2009 i know that.. I had a rough time putting together a top 50 for last year's draft... i'm having a tough time figuring out who to drop from that top 50 this year so far, it could be a huge year for OHL talent. Which means alot of writing and typing for me :)

It gets said every year, but I think this draft could shape up to be the best in years, maybe one of the best ever. The CHL talent this year is incredible.

I know the first thing people will say is why Kabanov #1. Well I just feel he brings just that tad more offensively to the table than Hall, but its no discredit to Taylor they are both amazing prospects.

I'm a big Granlund fan, hes small but hes dynamic. His skillset can definetly transfer over and be a big asset to an NHL club. Weal and Spooner are also two kids I'm high on.

Still on top!
I like Weal too but you have him way to high, Howden is easily the best forward behind Connolly from the WHL (for the upcoming draft) and you do not have him listed?

His name is either four, five, or six on almost every single list I've seen. However, I haven't read a whole lot about him. He doesn't seem to get any of the chatter that the other top ranked kids get. Can someone who's seen him give us a strengths/weaknesses on him? It would really be appreciated. It might kind of get this thread rolling in the right direction, too. These strengths/weaknesses threads are great sources of information by the time the draft talk really heats up.

Great list but keep an eye on Nino Niederreiter 6,2, 203 LW, playing rookie season in the WHL from Switzerland and off to a nice start 15 8 8 16 +3 18 pim.

He was a Midget super star with the T.O. Jr. Canadiens with a reputation for mouthing off at the refs, but whose antics were tolerated because his size, skill and strength put numbers on the board and inspired his team. Strengths? Size, solid skater, excellent anticipation/confidence/vision, solid shot; Weaknesses? Poise & playmaking could benefit from a little more patience, and experience will bring this. Not much to fault unless he has trouble getting his head on str8. Easily a ppg player at this level; as he redevelops his leadership role (which he will); we should see him step up in the defensive zone as he goes on. He's capable in all areas. Just a matter of time.

Strengths: Very strong on the puck, at 6'0 190+ hes firm on his skates. Great speed and most of his offensive skills are at least above-average.

Weaknesses: Not sure if everyone shares this, but I feel he could improve his defensive game, I think thats whats keeping him from penetrating the top of the class.

Eight left-wingers, eh? That's a very good thing! These days, it seems as if that's a very rare position to play, for whatever the reason.....

I cant put Kabanov in the TOP 2 right now. For me, its a battle Hall vs Seguin. I know we cannot analyse the talent just by the stats, but Kabanov have to start to put numbers to confirm. 4-9-13 in 10 games is not enough. We have seen guys like Couture and Esposito drop in the past, being unable to dominate, Kabanov is of course, a lot better than that guys but nobody will splitt on Hall and Seguin for a Russian players who cant be a league leader. I know that Moncton is not the best club in the LHJMQ but Seguin have done in the OHL what Kabanov seems unable to do in similar conditions. I doesnt give the 1st rank to Hall automaticly. Remember that Patrick Kane was seen like a 3rd rounder initialy. Seguin is younger, bigger, taller than Hall, he's a righthander and doesnt have support from his teamates. For the moment, the 8th scorer of Windsor have the same amount of point than the 2nd of Plymouth.

1- Hall and Seguin
3- Fowler and Kabanov

Last year was considered a weak goalie crop overall and none worthy of first round picks-but NYI grabbed hug KOSKINNEN with the first picj in round two and OTTAWA stole Robin Lehner with their pick in round two...

HOWEVER-the 2010 draft has 4 goalies who might go as first rounders or all e off the board by early round two:

I 'm not sure what the final ranking willbe but Louis Domingue and Maxime Clermont from the Q,Calvin Pickard from the WHL,and JACK CAMPBELL from the USNDTP could allbe taken in the top 40 ...and there are other goalies who could go later in roynd two or three...So its a deeper goalie crop this year..

Trends I've seen from the draft:

-it's a huge year for the OHL
-there are three elite defenseman prospects, and then a pretty big drop after that
-This draft is loaded with talented forwards
-The goalie crop looks okay, but I don't see more than two going in the first round.

Does anyone know why Central Scouting hasn't released the preliminary list for the 2010 Draft yet?

Isn't it usually out by now?

They have updated their site, but all they have are the final rankings for 2009 and the players to watch list for the lower leagues.

Thanks, but I meant the Central Scouting Bureau, the official NHL-service, not North American Central Scouting ;)

They are listed with "no update".

I've been tracking the goalies....It Clermont+Domingue have fallen off in their play as their save %'s have declined over the past month and they may even have droped out of the top ten...Gustaffson in Sweden has not had a good year...

Top 10 Ranking so far--may go something lke this:

1. JACK CAMPBELL
2.CALVIN PICKARD
3.PHILLIP GRUBAUER
4.KENT SIMPSON
5.MARK VISENTIN
6. CAB MORISS
7.SEAN BONAR
8.MICHAEL HOUSER
9. JAROSLAV JANUS
_____________________
Hard to say who gets the next spot to round out the top ten --maybe Willie Yanakeff ,Clermont ,Domingue ,Corbeil-Theriault---but I'll go oout of the box a bit on a hunch and put LARS VOLDEN the big Norwegian kid in at #10...just a hunch..
Now I have not included any of the Russian goalies--the 3 top rated Russkies from
central Scouting didn't play in the Subway Series -so I don't know much about them except I don't hear any buzz that any of them are so special they should be taken in the first round -so if they are later and also given the issues with the KHL-I probably avoid any Rssian who is not clearly a top first round talent. Even then-yo had better be a "Russian shop" like WASH to consider even the risk of drafting them now .

Janus got drafted in the 6th round by Tampa this year..

Pretty surprising that you mentioned Volden.. He's a pretty talented goalie.. If he ends up getting drafted he'll be the first Norwegian goalie to ever get drafted.. He just got selected to play for Norway in the WJC-20 D1 as a 17 year old.. That doesn't happen very often. They usually go with the older guys..
