Tyler Hopkins jumped into a GOJHL conference final game with Hamilton and had 1G/1A to help them to a 6-1 win. We'll see if this was a one off or if he stays with Hamilton for the rest of the GOJHL playoffs. Hamilton is up 3-0 in their series. Their next game is on Wednesday night

Okay, i forget who asked for me to do a mock draft but here you go. I know the OHL cup isn‘t over yet but I feel like not much can happen in that game that could sway my opinion too much. Here is the first round mock draft with a bit of an explanation as to why I thought the team would select a player there.

I‘ll post my updated top-40 tomorrow.

Erie1 Matthew Schaefer (D)Halton Hurricanes U16 AAAGoing to be an interesting selection. Not clear cut as I once thought it’d be. I think Erie benefits most from adding a high end defender to their lineup.
Niagara 2 Owen Griffin (F)York Simcoe Express U16 AAAI think Niagara is going to have trouble bringing in some of the top selections. I think one will commit and I predict it will be Griffin.
Soo3 Brady Martin (F)Waterloo Wolves U16 AAAPicking BPA, Martin seems a perfect fit in the Soo. Enjoyed a great OHL cup that cemented his stock.
Kingston4 Tyler Hopkins (F)Hamilton Kilty B'sHigh end talent that plays the game the right way. I think Kingston simply goes BPA here.
Niagara 5 Carson Cameron (D)Central Ontario Wolves U16 AAANiagara could use a high end defender and with me predicting them having trouble recruiting, Cameron seems like a good fit here.
Oshawa 6 Ryan Roobroeck (F)London Jr. Knights U16 AAARoobroeck I think ends up with his brother in Oshawa. They have treated Dylan good there and I think it’s the best place for him to find success.
Mississauga7 Quinn Beauchesne (D)Nepean Raiders U18 AAAI think that Missy could use a defender here to fit in with their cup window. Class isn’t great for defenders but I could still see teams reaching a bit to draft by position. Missy is one of those teams.
Brantford/Hamilton8 Jack Nesbitt (F)Lambton Jr. Sting U16 AAAI think that Hamilton could use a higher upside kid with size. Nesbitt is that and doesn’t come with some questionable character traits as others do.
Sudbury 9 Jack Ivankovic (G)Mississauga Senators U16 AAASudbury nabs the best goaltending prospect to enter the OHL since Benjamin Gaudreau. They’ll solve their goaltending issues for the next 4 years with this pick.
Kitchener10 Henry Brzustewicz (D)North Jersey Avalanche 16U AAAWith his vocal desire to come to the OHL, paired with his brother playing on the team and having 2 straight picks, this one is a no brainer.
Kitchener11 Jake O'Brien (F)Toronto Jr. Canadiens U16 AAAI think they may want a more offensive oriented kid with the amount of graduations happening this year. I think O’Brien makes sense here.
Owen Sound12 Matheas Stark (F)Toronto Marlboros U16 AAAThey go BPA here. It also helps I feel Stark would be a perfect fit here. He seems like an Owen Sound selection of previous years.
Peterborough 13 William McFadden (F)Peterborough Petes U16 AAAThis is a no brainer here also. Petes go with go with the hometown kid that brings a good deal of offensive to his game. With the amount of graduations on offence this year, I think this is a match made in heaven.
Guelph14 Nicolas Addy (F)Toronto Jr. Canadiens U16 AAACharacter issues, yes but one can’t deny his talent and potential. I think some team will take a chance on upside here, Guelph seems like a good enough spot.
Flint15 Shamar Moses (F)Don Mills Flyers U16 AAAI didn’t really know what do do with Flint. So I just went off of gut instinct and they go with one of the BPA.
Saginaw16 Aidan Lane (F)St. Michael's BuzzersGreat performance at the OHL cup boosted his stock. I think some team is going to take him in the first, Saginaw was my choice.
Sarnia17 Caden Taylor (F)Mississauga Senators U16 AAAI feel like this will be a good place for Taylor to succeed. Should get good ice time next season with many offensive graduations. Taylor is a polarizing player but in the right circumstances he could thrive. I think Sarnia provides potential for him.
London18 William Moore (F)Toronto Marlboros U16 AAAI think if he is going NTDP, someone in the first round still takes a chance at him at some point. London is always a threat with players like these. Lev Katzin could be another.
Barrie19 Cameron Reid (D)Bishop Kearney Selects 15U AAAWith Brandt Clarke’s graduation, I think Barrie could select a defender. Cameron Reid is an offensive kid that could thrive in Barrie.
Windsor20 Chase Hull (F)Renfrew Wolves U18 AAAWindsor will need scoring going forward and Hull provides that. An element that will be missing if their next window is built around their ‘06’s and ‘07’s.
North Bay21 Aiden Young (F)Strathroy RocketsBPA. Aiden Young was London’s best player at the OHL cup and has consistently gotten better as the season has progressed.
Ottawa22 Ethan Weir (F)London Jr. Knights U16 AAI think Ottawa goes with a kid that was fairly regarded at one point. I think Weir provides good upside at this spot. BPA.

They were willing to in 2017 with Jack Hughes, if I remember correctly. But Mississauge ruined that. It’s been a while though.

Can’t see Sudbury going for a goalie that early. If they feel they will be going for it next season then I believe they will go after one with their Euro pick.

i would be surprised if stark, mcfadden, lane, moore, hull and young went in the 1st based on what ive heard.

i think cameron will be in the bottom 13 - 25 range, addy and obrien may go to school and see them fall back.

I appreciate the info on which kids are contemplating school in particular.

Which kids do you think OHL teams like more than many think?

This is a great list. I can't see Stark going that high based on what I watched in the OHL Cup. There are also concerns about Nesbitt's skating that will push him down as well as family ties between O'Brien and Hamilton. As much of a unicorn Schaefer is, I still feel Erie goes Martin with the first. Cameron over Beauchesne was an interesting one for me also. Beauchesne brings quite a bit more flash and offense to his game, which tends to be the focus among young defenders.

Character is all the rage these days, and one that may push Addy down, unless he nails his interviews. Moses isn't a name we've seen in the first round much this year, so this one intrigues me. I haven't watched DMF much this year, so I may be missing something. Lane tore up the OHL Cup and deserves to be in the first. Taylor as well. From personal viewings, Lane is much better without the puck than Taylor, however.

McFadden showed very well in the OHL Cup and had a very strong season. I take OMHA statistics in the 07 age group with a grain of salt due to competition levels. This is my challenge with Griffin as well. Need to see better production against the better teams. A Martin hat trick against the Marlies is what I'm talking about, for example.

Moore is going NTDP but some team will take him in the first. My guess is Kitchener since they have two firsts and will not hesitate to burn picks in the past for upside. Katzin is another possibility, but Moore>Katzin, so if Kitchener rolls the dice, they go Moore. Perhaps Katzin goes later in the first. Read today that Katzin played with a broken hand for the past three weeks, which some teams will love for character alone.

Hull falls for me since I don't trust numbers coming out of that league. Admittedly, I did not watch the player much this year, aside from CWG. Aiden Young is a first round talent based on OHL Cup alone. Was regularly the best player on that team. Weir and Roobroeck were disappointing and while I don't think Roobroeck falls much, 6 to Oshawa makes a lot of sense. Weir may slip out of the first round due to the OHL Cup. There was hope that moving to his age group would mean better numbers.

there is a big disconnect i think between what independent scouts look for and what teams look for. a kid who has great dangles may be nice on the eyes, but im not sure that they go as high as some thing. take a look at all the online lists, they mostly are inaccurate due to valuing skilled soft players vs competitive skilled players.

People in minorhockeytalks.com saying Roobroeck has informed Erie he won’t report (if they were even considering it). Probably doesn’t mean a lot though, most of the time it’s just miserable parents arguing anonymously on that site.

How deep do you expect Niagara to have to reach for reports? Hypothetically speaking, if you were to rank the top 20 kids that are serious about OHL, what range would Niagara be looking at for #2 and #5? Would they need to reach outside the top 10 rated players to get reporting players? Woudl it be as bad as that?

Are there any other hard lines you foresee? Any top kids you potentially see try to strong arm their way into a team significantly further down the list?

Conversely, any teams you see strategically picking a player to declare defected and trade rights for a guaranteed return and report for the trading teams?

i cant say on niagara but most of the top 10/15 players outside of schafer will not report. wier will but im not sure hes considered a top 15 player.

the other questions couldnt say yet, its still early, i dont think obrien and addy are playing games but i could be wrong.

katzin is also heavily considering school and that sounds ligit.

niagara will continue to have this issue until a true gm is hired

Personally, my list is built on my draft philosophy if I were in a position to be working for a team. I can't speak for everyone who puts out public lists, but my goal isn't to predict how high players will go but to create a list of players I'd vouch for if I were working for a team.

It's fair to say there are stylistic preferences and differences in philosophies, but saying they are inaccurate is probably a stretch too far.

Curious if there are any question marks for Erie. Historically they have had issues with commitments and now they have been bottom of the league for a while. I haven’t heard anything yet but rumors don’t usually start swirling until closer to the draft. But if Erie has a few guys at the top also telling them no, this draft gets super interesting. I can’t imagine Erie takes someone 1st overall unless they 100% commit. They are much more likely to reach on someone than take a kid who is on the fence

Erie1Matthew Schaefer (D)Halton Hurricanes U16 AAAGoing to be an interesting selection. Not clear cut as I once thought it’d be. I think Erie benefits most from adding a high end defender to their lineup.
Niagara2Owen Griffin (F)York Simcoe Express U16 AAAI think Niagara is going to have trouble bringing in some of the top selections. I think one will commit and I predict it will be Griffin.
Soo3Brady Martin (F)Waterloo Wolves U16 AAAPicking BPA, Martin seems a perfect fit in the Soo. Enjoyed a great OHL cup that cemented his stock.
Kingston4Tyler Hopkins (F)Hamilton Kilty B'sHigh end talent that plays the game the right way. I think Kingston simply goes BPA here.
Niagara5Carson Cameron (D)Central Ontario Wolves U16 AAANiagara could use a high end defender and with me predicting them having trouble recruiting, Cameron seems like a good fit here.
Oshawa6Ryan Roobroeck (F)London Jr. Knights U16 AAARoobroeck I think ends up with his brother in Oshawa. They have treated Dylan good there and I think it’s the best place for him to find success.
Mississauga7Quinn Beauchesne (D)Nepean Raiders U18 AAAI think that Missy could use a defender here to fit in with their cup window. Class isn’t great for defenders but I could still see teams reaching a bit to draft by position. Missy is one of those teams.
Brantford/Hamilton8Jack Nesbitt (F)Lambton Jr. Sting U16 AAAI think that Hamilton could use a higher upside kid with size. Nesbitt is that and doesn’t come with some questionable character traits as others do.
Sudbury9Jack Ivankovic (G)Mississauga Senators U16 AAASudbury nabs the best goaltending prospect to enter the OHL since Benjamin Gaudreau. They’ll solve their goaltending issues for the next 4 years with this pick.
Kitchener10Henry Brzustewicz (D)North Jersey Avalanche 16U AAAWith his vocal desire to come to the OHL, paired with his brother playing on the team and having 2 straight picks, this one is a no brainer.
Kitchener11Jake O'Brien (F)Toronto Jr. Canadiens U16 AAAI think they may want a more offensive oriented kid with the amount of graduations happening this year. I think O’Brien makes sense here.
Owen Sound12Matheas Stark (F)Toronto Marlboros U16 AAAThey go BPA here. It also helps I feel Stark would be a perfect fit here. He seems like an Owen Sound selection of previous years.
Peterborough13William McFadden (F)Peterborough Petes U16 AAAThis is a no brainer here also. Petes go with go with the hometown kid that brings a good deal of offensive to his game. With the amount of graduations on offence this year, I think this is a match made in heaven.
Guelph14Nicolas Addy (F)Toronto Jr. Canadiens U16 AAACharacter issues, yes but one can’t deny his talent and potential. I think some team will take a chance on upside here, Guelph seems like a good enough spot.
Flint15Shamar Moses (F)Don Mills Flyers U16 AAAI didn’t really know what do do with Flint. So I just went off of gut instinct and they go with one of the BPA.
Saginaw16Aidan Lane (F)St. Michael's BuzzersGreat performance at the OHL cup boosted his stock. I think some team is going to take him in the first, Saginaw was my choice.
Sarnia17Caden Taylor (F)Mississauga Senators U16 AAAI feel like this will be a good place for Taylor to succeed. Should get good ice time next season with many offensive graduations. Taylor is a polarizing player but in the right circumstances he could thrive. I think Sarnia provides potential for him.

Barrie19Cameron Reid (D)Bishop Kearney Selects 15U AAAWith Brandt Clarke’s graduation, I think Barrie could select a defender. Cameron Reid is an offensive kid that could thrive in Barrie.
Windsor20Chase Hull (F)Renfrew Wolves U18 AAAWindsor will need scoring going forward and Hull provides that. An element that will be missing if their next window is built around their ‘06’s and ‘07’s.
North Bay21Aiden Young (F)Strathroy RocketsBPA. Aiden Young was London’s best player at the OHL cup and has consistently gotten better as the season has progressed.
Ottawa22Ethan Weir (F)London Jr. Knights U16 AAI think Ottawa goes with a kid that was fairly regarded at one point. I think Weir provides good upside at this spot. BPA.
Thank you so much @GermanSpitfire! This is great work.

Appreciate all the insight on here & the mock draft! While I love the draft I never stay focused on it for the O until its the final weeks then I really dive in.

Gonna be weird having to wait for Sarnia's pick & it not be in the top 7-8 haha!

London18William Moore (F)Toronto Marlboros U16 AAAI think if he is going NTDP, someone in the first round still takes a chance at him at some point. London is always a threat with players like these. Lev Katzin could be another.
BPA.

Are they not televising the final tonight?

Germanspitfire - thanks for the list!

Just curious but is Hopkins really BPA over Roobroeck at #4?

If not, I’m wondering if the Fronts go after Roobroeck as they may not want him falling into the hands of a rival at #6 and could accept the compensation if it he ends up not showing.
