On paper the trades seem fair, but I don't know why the Leafs would do these trades

It's really Fowler and Trouba for Gardiner, JVR and Kapanean

The truth is, Fowler is OK and Trouba has the potential to be good. Lou isn't paying Trouba much more than Rielly and do the Leafs really need that headache.

I think the Leafs would rather stick with their "own" Gardiner, JVR, and the unknown potential of Kapanan.

What? Jake Gardiner is consistently one of the better posession players on the Leafs. Feel free to check where he stacks up against other Leafs http://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/TOR/2016.html If you can back up your statement with some facts, I'm interested to see what you have. Not to mention that flaming his point totals is pretty funny when compared to Trouba.

Trouba is a good player and I want him on the Leafs, but you clearly are incorrect when it comes to Gardiner.

That's setting the bar pretty low.

Oh look its Jake Gardiner directly causing a goal already. That didn't take long. Terrible pedestrian coverage in front, but I'm not shocked. He does it a lot.

"A bonafide top-4 defender with huge upside and astronomical trade value" - signed, every single leaf fan.

Well, i guess you can't make mistakes if you whine like a pissant and refuse to play. -signed Jacob Trouba.

1st trade:

TO ANA: JVR (4.25) + Hunwick (1.25)

TO TOR: Fowler (4.0) + Stoner (3.25) + 2nd 2017 (Prev TOR) + 2nd 2017 ANA

Anaheim sheds some cap and adds their top line LW. Hunwick is depth for the bottom pairing at a cheaper price with only one year left. They save 5.25 total off the Stoner contract and put it towards Lindholm/Rakell. The 2nd rounders are the cost for shedding Stoner who is a 100% cap dump.

Toronto adds a younger defenceman in Fowler that can play a lot of minutes. He would play on the second pairing and solidify the top 4. Stoner's cap hit is manageable due to the Leafs not utilizing LTIR on the Robidas and Lupul contracts yet.

2nd deal:

TO WIN: Gardiner (4.0) + Kapanen (0.9) + 2nd 2017 ANA + 2nd 2017 OTT or SJ

TO TOR: Trouba (~5.0-5.5)

Winnipeg gets the LD they want while adding additional assets due to Trouba being younger than Gardiner. Kapanen looked great in camp and could eventually line up opposite Laine.

Toronto adds a RD to pair with Morgan Rielly. The defence after the above deals would look like this:

Rielly-Trouba

Fowler-Zaitsev

Stoner-Carrick

(Marincin-Polak)

The 2nd deal is pretty bad for the Leafs. The difference between Trouba and Gardiner isn't two 2nds and a 1st.

3 way trade to help all.

Jets
Fowler
Kapanen
Stoner (to make cap work)
ducks 2nd round pick (for stoner)

Ducks
JVR

Leafs
Trouba
Doubt that Winnipeg has very little interest in adding an over paid Clayton Stoner and Kapanen really isn't needed for them either. Doubt any team is willing to help out Anaheim with their cap situation can't see many teams being interested in Stoner especially Winnipeg.

I agree but they had the cap space and get a 2nd rounder for it.

realistically the deal would be

Jets
Fowler
Kapanen

Ducks
JVR

Leafs
Trouba

and the ducks have to trade stoner to a low cap team for something to sign H.Lind.

Still a bad trade that only helps the Leafs. Ducks can't afford JVR when we need to shed salary. And we can't just dump Stoner whenever, if we did we would have already and we wouldn't be trading Fowler. And Jets fans have made it perfectly clear they hate Fowler and think he's terrible, so him and a winger they don't need doesn't help them.
