Lots of factors in play:

What is Pionk’s real value in the league? And what is ADA’s for that matter? How do the Rangers factor in the fact that one got fed to the wolves while the other received a lot less high danger minutes until the end? How comfortable are they that ADA outgrew the off-ice stuff that got him benched several times?

What’s the add required to a player like Skjei to get a Trouba? How does that line up with the questions re: value above?

How does the team view the pipeline of not just Fox, but Lundkvist and Keane as well? Both on their own and vis-a-vis ADA and Pionk?

Will Trouba be moved before the draft? What if they snag Seider or another RHD?

Fascinating situation if they are indeed in on Trouba as @Edge speculates.

Pionk was just as bad against bottom 6 players as he was top line players.

He was for sure given more than he could chew, but he was still bad when the competition lightened up for him.

DeAngelo outperformed him against "elite" competition.

I just don't understand what the rush is to get rid of a guy like Pionk (or Buch or Skjei). Pionk is 23. If we keep him and he has a bad year, what's the downside? A team that's going to be bad either way is a little worse? It doesn't seem like to me like that really costs us anything. On the other hand:

- After struggling the season before, DeAngelo took a huge step forward last season at age 23
- Zibanejad increased his scoring rate by almost 50% last season and emerged as a #1 Center at age 26
- Carolina traded away Lindholm last season and he almost doubled his scoring rate from the season before and became a ppg player at age 23
- Tomas Hertl almost doubled his scoring rate from the season before and became a ppg player at age 25
- Columbus gave Vegas a 1st round pick to take William Karlsson two years ago and he emerged as a ppg #1 center at age 24
- Florida gave Vegas Reilly Smith to take Jonathan Marchessault two years ago and they both emerged as ppg players at age 26

Not every player is done developing at age 23 and some players actually take huge steps forward afterwards, so why shouldn't we wait and figure out what we have in our young players instead of trading them away before they hit their full potential, especially if it's not going to cost us anything?

Furthermore, it's not like Pionk doesn't have any potential. He's a great skater and he was the 4th highest scoring U23 defenseman in the NHL just a year ago. I'm not saying he's the next Zubov, but I would say there's some irony in seeing people bemoan trading away Zubov because he wasn't a perfect player at age 24 and then advocate trading away Pionk at age 23 in the same forum.

Most of my problems with Pionk stem from his defensive game not improving at all and it being really quite dire. I'm concerned the coaches aren't going to see that because he seems like a "good soldier" type of player, will work hard in practice and do what the coach tells him and therefor becomes a favorite while other players are outplaying him. DeAngelo should be considered ahead of him at this point and get more minutes based on merit, it's entirely likely that Fox will quickly pass him.
I need to see some real tangible and large improvement out of him or he's becoming a speed bump to more skilled players.

Mods: I hope this is allowed, since it's well-respected HFNYR member Edge who appeared on our podcast today and I feel a lot of people will enjoy this. If a separate thread isn't allowed, please merge it with the Roster Building thread.

Today we had a very special guest on the Under Review podcast. Special thanks go out to @NYR Viper for suggesting this and of course to @Edge for agreeing to join us. We discuss the way the Rangers organization has changed over the years, how to fix the situation in Hartford with the Wolf Pack and we dive into the off-season with some potential moves.

listened to it all while playing Overwatch. Great stuff you put together here! I too am super excited for this draft to happen!

Just doing stupid moves for the sake of it , speeds up time.

Makes ya feel like shit is getting real.

Definitely keep Pionk but just play him on 3rd pairing.

Should be TDA/Fox/Pionk on the right side.

Pionk is a prime candidate to moved this off-season. From all indications, the Rangers expect Fox to step into the lineup this season. I remain skeptical of the Rangers buying out Shattenkirk. More likely they try to rebuild his value, so he’s getting ice time. And DeAngelo was the Rangers best Dman last season. And Joey Keane will be in Hartford. And it’s clear the Rangers will be involved in talks regarding Trouba. I do not expect Pionk to be on the Rangers come opening night.

Forgot about Shatty. I'm an idiot.

RB on the podcast would be great.

Pionk's problem is that he's not really good at anything outside of shooting the puck. He can't play defense, he can't move the puck, his offense was almost completely limited to the PP last year, which dried up after a hot start and he is far from a bruiser. What exactly does he bring to the table? Also completely disagree that hes a great skater, he's pretty fast in a straight line but he takes a while to get going and his actual quickness in small areas is below average - This in most cases is a death blow for undersized D.

You're right, not every player is done developing at 23, but the things that Pionk needs to improve on are very hard to improve on.

We have 3 similar options on the right side who are superior to him currently. If we keep him and he continues to suck, the downside is that we're stuck with him plugging up a spot.

He's actually regressed defensively ... and I didn't think that was even possible.

We saw it with Skjei his sophomore season.

Pionk was thrown into the fire last year. He played too many minutes on a crappy team and against players that can make good dmen look bad.

What kind of player will Pionk be when he's 26? 28? He absolutely is expendable but I think he gets a bad rap from a lot of guys here.
