Something little I didn't notice during the game--on ZBad's shorty, watch Lias's reaction. He's a kid trying to work his way up the lineup. He busted his hump to get into the play, and put himself into a perfect position of a tap in. When Mika takes the shot himself, it would have been so easy (and so human) to be a little irked. But Lias has a Prucha-level smile on his face. Again--it's just a little thing, but that's the kind of stuff I love to see on a team.

He's been a leader on all his teams and things like this are exactly why. We need guys just like this. Lemieux is the same way. Hard to play against.

Give me those guys in two years and I'll bet they are either on a very good 3rd line, one of the best in the league, or a solid 2nd line.

Something about Panarin’s game that gets overlooked is that he’s really tenacious and effective at winning pucks back from the opposition in the offensive zone, especially for his size. He’s so smart and can anticipate where the puck carrier is going or where he’s going to move the puck and before he even passes it Panarin is already picking it off.

After two games no one is complaining about Brendan Smith:

Too busy absolutely piledriving Brady Skjei

Honestly guys Georgiev is clearly our best option in net. Calm game while hank is old school chaos in there flopping and diving around. Georgie is Always in control. Goes. Long way with our young blue line.
I wouldnt say hes always in control. Georgiev got out of position a few times where if the d didnt make a play, it wouldve been a goal. He did play great though. The thing is, its early into the season. Players and systems are still adjusting. I like georgie, hes great and young. Right now all I want to see is how he fares against more established teams. If he keeps playing well, then no problem with him having more starts.

Yeah Skjei was the negative for me. Especially at a time when he's supposed to be the one dependable element at left defense.

His performance has really got me invested in how Hajek, Lindgren, and ultimately Miller progress, because it's becoming clear that Skjei isn't gonna hit that ceiling.

Definitely a better team game. More support from everyone, better backchecking, most of the time made it harder for Ottawa to get good chances. Still mistakes and all but structurally it was better. Of course, Ottawa isn't nearly the team Winipeg is.

Thought Kakko was looking better, spent more time with the puck and more time trying to get it, but still at other times didn't seem in sync with his linemates or quite know where to go next. "solid" game where he again got a few chances but nothing quite going his way yet. Hopefully things continue getting a bit easier.

I'd have to watch again (and probably won't) but I didn't think SKjei was bad. I think people are kind of dog piling on him at this point because he's not an exciting new prospect so they're exaggerating the lows and ignoring the good parts of his game. Still, he could be better. Trouba looks nice, Fox looked real good at times, much more calm and composed than last game. Hajek also looked better but in a more quiet way.

So, not bad, but it feels like that second line has to get sorted out somehow.

Namestnikov doesn't do face-offs, or well, he did 50 last year and won 40% of them. No way to have a guy with such face-off talent or lack thereof centering the second line.

Kakko and Strome didn't play much together in the pre-season, so I'd wait a few more games to see how the chemistry develops.
Faceoffs are a poor reason not to put a guy at center.

eh if you're reallllly bad at them then it's not good. Most players seem to improve to around 50%, like Hayes, but if you're reliably more likely to lose them than to win them then the team can't really rely on you for faceoffs

Reposting this from the Lias thread, but who cares. Gotsta reach the big Post-Game Talk audience:

Lias "fancy stats" in all situations (5v5 and PK), per Corsica:

57.14% CorsiFor% (+9.32% rel)
85.71% FenwickFor% (+40.14% rel, first on the team by a mile)
80% ShotsFor% (+34.39% rel, first on the team)
90.63% ExpectedGoalsFor% (+49.83% rel, second on the team)

TOI: 10:16

Not going to lie, I'm probably a bit biased towards Lias, and am very much hoping he succeeds. But his underlying numbers are Fantastic (albeit in a small sample size), far better than what I had hoped for.

Confirmation bias is strong with this post. Georgiev overall IS more composed in style than Lundqvist, but he has his fair share of scrambling and being caught out of position. All goalies do. It's more just you preferring his style than Lundqvist's. Teammates just want their goalie stopping the puck, I'm sure really chaotic goalies like Hasek and Tim Thomas' teammates were fine with them back there.

I'm going to say it. Georgie should be the one playing 50 games this year and the King with 32. I thought this before the pre-season and I feel even more strongly. Nothing against Hank but I think him playing around 30 games would maximize the best that he still has left and he would be much more refreshed each time out.

Georgie is ready to take on a bigger load and this is the time to do it.

Hopefully Quinn and the rest of the mngt team see this as well and slowly but surely has this passing of the torch comes to be.
Glad you waited *checks notes* two games into the season before seeing all you needed to see. Terrific stuff.

I think close to a 50/50 split makes sense. Making Henrik literally the back up doesn't make much sense unless his and Georgie's play dictates it so. Two games into the season, one game where Lundqvist faced more scoring chances in a period than Georgiev did all night in his game, against the worst team in the NHL no less, is not enough. We should hope both goalies play well and we see a close to even split.

I get it, there's a segment of the fanbase that just wants all of the old gone and to move on with things but come on. Waiting two games into the season, with Georgiev facing fricking Ottawa of all teams. Give me a break.

Hajek was really good in this game. Nice bounceback after he sucked Thursday. Everyone kinda did. Not playing the full lineup in a preseason game was an error by Quinn, but we won so menzamenz.

I still think Hajek makes Skjei obsolete in a half a f***ing minute.

Fun game. Zibanejad is becoming the player we all thought he could. Georgiev showing why it's premature to assume Shesterkin is the goalie of the future.

Defense was quite a bit better. Score-adjusted CF% was decent. I'll take it.

C’mon, Zibanejad is breaking through the most optimistic views of what kind of player he was expected to be.
