Yawn.

Look, if Aho gets an offer sheet, he isn't signing it. His agent will take it to the Canes and say "if things fall apart we have options" and they'll figure it out.

In Kev's scenario that would then give the Canes leverage to immediately deal him to Ottawa - right? Assuming he took LeBrun's tweet as a threat. Aho doesn't have to take that risk if Waddell already assured him an Offer Sheet would be matched. He could name his $$, term, and decide which of 2 teams he will end up with and have it nearly wrapped up in the next hour. Seems pretty ideal for him.

They stated they will match any offer. That includes compensation of 4 1st round picks.

So if they are going to trade Aho, the return logically would need to be above and beyond 4 1st round picks.

So they will "talk trade", that doesn't mean they are going to accept reasonable value for Aho.

But they might accept unreasonable! :(

Its like the situation I'm currently in. My current job is being eliminated and a few months back I was strongly advised to look for something else. My current manager ended up finding me a new role, which I am currently scheduled to begin next week, but behind the scenes I've been working hard to secure a job that I actually want which I am expecting to be offered either this week or next.

Its like the offer sheet. Oh, I might have it in hand, and if I have to use it I will, but my intentions are still to work this out on my own. Either way, my full intentions are to continue working for my company going forward, even if the details aren't completely worked out.

It's like y'all have never even heard of negotiations before.

Aho doesn't want to leave. Dundon doesn't want him to leave. Waddell has already said "we'll match, period" which means the worst case scenario is we've got him for four years in a contract we don't love.

But keep listening to that Montreal media, which has been right about absolutely everything in the past.

It's like The Ring. Phone rings. You answer, they whisper: "Seven Days". It's the NHL Central Registry that's calling. That's the time you got, the negotiations are done with.

So Waddell doesn't really have any leverage to threaten a trade of Aho unless he does it in the next 20 minutes? In fact it may encourage Aho to sign an offer sheet ASAP to eliminate the possibility of a trade?

I think every Hurricanes fan should be scared ****less that somebody screws up a negotiation tactic and Aho leaves.

He can't leave unless the team allows it. That's the whole point of RFA rights.

They could sit around offering him 8 years at $1 million per year if they wanted while talking bad about his momma the whole time. It doesn't matter.

LeBrun, who I think everyone agrees has a source in Don Waddell, basically sent out the tweet about "entertaining trades" directly from Waddell's lips, I'd bet pretty decent money (if I were a betting person).

this is the GM Borg basically saying "come at me bro" to would-be offer-sheeters. he's not doing it just to be a dick, he's doing it because he can. because he has sufficient leverage in an RFA negotiation. if Aho were a UFA this would have played out completely differently. Aho has leverage based on his play and comparable contracts. Waddell has leverage based on...everything else? team control (Aho doesn't have arbitration rights!!!), the offer sheet mechanic, an overall culture of narrow salary cap margins throughout the league, being able to hold another team's cap space hostage for x number of days at the hottest period of free agency before they decide to match an offer sheet, and so on and so on.

Aho signing a front-loaded offersheet, which will be matched, will cause significant harm to his team's ability to put the pieces around him to be successful at a high level. He must be aware of the reality of the market.

Something smells fishy about this entire thing. They can't be oblivious to comparables. Why would the FO hold firm on a number that is below Draisaitl unadjusted for cap inflation? I can buy Dundon instilling a culture of hard negotiation, but I can't buy idiocy.

Rangers will have improved if that happens, but they will just be another team in the fray.
