To win the hart as a dman these days you probably gotta finish top 5 in NHL scoring and not have a runaway forward scorer. So if Makar finished 5th with 110 points and the 4 forwards above him had like 125 122 115 112.

Makar's play this season is definitely reminding me of Rover KArlsson's year a couple of seasons ago.

I dont blame Makar, AVS probably asking him to play that way as they need offence ...however its is very much negatively effecting his defensive game which is atrocious/non existent at the moment. Avs are also playing below .500 so i dont know how long they can continue playing Makar this way before they decide its not really good for winning actual hockey games.
Spoken 100% like someone who has watched ZERO Avs games this season.

You can use them to make an argument why someone should win the Hart but you don't actually win the trophy with fancy stat sheets, you need more easily identifiable markers. I don't quite remember Pronger's win but checking the stats he was second in dman scoring, 1st in +/- well ahead of everyone but Chelios at +52, and of course being Pronger is always physically imposing. Jagr would have been prime competition at 1.5ppg but he missed 20 games.

As a Canucks fans I love Hughes and he's our MVP but there's nothing that stands out about him for actual Hart consideration at the moment outside of those fancy stat charts.

Hughes seems to make it work when you only consider the 3rd and 4th line.

65% CF, 62% FF, 71% xGF when neither Miller or Pettersson are on the ice.

Makar is 39% CF, 37% FF, and 37% xGF without MacKinnon.
The eye test matches with this as well. Hes not nearly as dominant without MacKinnon on the ice with him.

Not commenting on Hughes specifically but I feel like it shouldn't be so ridiculous to suggest a d-man has a shot at the Hart; no MVP in the past 24 years playing from D just doesn't sound realistic to me. I get votes are usually done by the numbers but there's more to the game than that.

It’s funny that Conn Smythe voting is much more spread out with defensemen and goalies. Obviously part of that is that usually it’s someone from the winning team and so it depends a bit on how they’re built. Also, goalies are more likely to play every game. But I feel like watching a greater number of the games gives a better sense of who was really the most valuable which is difficult in the regular season and easier to point to stats.

It is threads like this that help us remember that this board is populated by fans far more than by analysts.

There are any number of players who could still win the Hart this season and it is way, way too early to speculate about a longshot, no matter how dominant he's been in a small sample of games.

For the record, Hughes was 7th in Hart voting last season. So, he could improve on that. Not sure about a nomination, but top-5 in Hart voting is very attainable.

didn't we do this at this time LAST year also?
Yes.

I think it might have been even later in the year. Quinn started off on like a 110 point pace through 20 games or so iirc. Cooled off a tiny bit. Won the Norris. Could see that happening again.

The only way he wins a Hart is if he leads the league in scoring, the Canucks win the Presidents. Mackinnon, Kucherov and Kaprizov break a leg and miss 20 or so games.
And after all that Makar is still the better player.

I'm thinking he has no shot at MVP. The media meat puppets are as dumb as a lot of the fans but really, who gives a shit? Win the big trophy. Allvin and Rutherford need to end 54 years of misery here. Terry Gregson f***ed us in 94. 2025 seems like a good year to have a parade down Hastings Street.

Makar and Mack might combine for 260 points but that team is a shit show. They need to rest up for the gimmicky 2 Nations Cup. Need to show the hillbillies down south who still rules the roost.
