I think 10-4-4 is a perfectly fine way to start the season, especially with the compressed schedule and the inconsistency of every team in this league not named the Blackhawks. It would be nice for Lamoriello to get the eight defenseman situation worked out, but it's going to happen soon and we may end up with a top six forward before the regular season comes to an end - which will only help the offense tremendously.
Regardless of all that, I don't think what this team achieved in the playoffs last year was a fluke. I don't think what this team did at the beginning of the season was a fluke either. This is a good group, they can potentially go deep in the playoffs again, but the regular season is filled with momentum swings, highs and lows. Right now they're on a low, but it only takes one convincing win to set the ship straight.
Its extremely tough to beat the same exact team in their barn twice in a row. Look, the Devils have some problems (Zajac, Henrique, the PK, Tallinder, 8 D-men, etc...), but teams go through adversity during the grind of the regular season. Despite all of the problems the group is facing, they're still tied for number 1 in the division. It is absolutely NOT the time to hit the panic button - be patient, things can change as quickly as next game. This is going to be a very bipolar season, its the nature of a 48 game campaign.
