This happened near me at a rink I play at. Just awful.

There's not much info on exactly what happened yet and I hate speculating but this should be a reminder and teaching experience for rinks and people.

Given his age, the likely cause and theory was an arrythmia due to some underlying condition. They tried CPR to no avail, no mention of a defibrilator being used, which might've saved his life.

Every rink really needs to tighten up prodecures on locating/getting AED and using it properly and promptly.

The club my son plays with had a kid pass away on the ice maybe 12 years ago. There it was a puck to the neck.

The body is just so strange at times. I've seen situations where the human body can take just extreme trauma and survive, or take seemingly minor bumps and suffer devastating, even fatal, consequences.

Having an AED on site is certainly a good idea. The problem though is they're used so rarely that on the one occasion you do need one nobody might even know where it is, or how to use it.

Anyways - I feel for the parents.
