GDT: #16 Sabres vs Devils - A Friar gets his wings

I am glad we finally figured out that everything was all Jeff Skinner's fault. it just took them a game to shake off his bad vibes. That Gusev goal was definitely Skinner's fault, they didn't shake out all the vibes

People need to relax about the Sabres getting scored on while playing 6 on 4. The PK wasn't able to do a line change that entire set of plays and were exhausted by the time NJ scored, it happens

Also they gave Eakin the goal (Okposo assist)

Sabres had 9 centers in the lineup

2/22: Skinner + TT scratched - loss
2/23: Skinner plays + TT scratched - win

Sabres are going to regret not signing Ullmark to a multiyear deal big time.

He's an average NHL goalie playing in a contract year. I agree the Sabres should re-sign him since they don't have anyone immediately capable of replacing him, but he's not a superstar capable of playing 60+ games a season, the Sabres will also need to sign a 1A/1B goalie to split the load with him

I like Linus, glad to see him playing well.

I've heard other posters say it but he seems to need a bit to get acclimated to each higher level of competition but once he does he starts to excel.

I hope he keeps it up and forces kruger to keep playing him.

Really like Reinhart's game and as much as I like Olofsson I wish he would show more 5 on 5...probably has a lot to do with Eichel being hot garbage 5 on 5 this year.

That said though, I thought this was by far Eichel's best game, he was skating hard in both zones, back checking hard, making better plays in the Ozone. He still has a long way to go to get back up to last year's level but he's finally showing signs of life at least.

I wonder if the nagging shoulder thing is what's messing with his confidence and finally last night he just powered through it and saw that he can still be effective.

We need him to keep this up and grind through it...the rest of the team seems to feed off of it.

Also, I think we need to keep the hungry youngsters up...Asplund, Mitts, Byryon, before he was hurt, Borgen have all looked really good in their roles and like they belong in the NHL.

More of that please, less of the declining vets and overpaid under producers (skins).

Bryson outside the penalty has played decently as well.
Sure do hope they don't coach joining the rush / attacking the net out of him.

My soft man crush for this season might have to be Sheahan. Strong on the PK, good 4th line player, gets the puck in deep and works the boards. Happy he has worked out so far
I'd love the Sabres to add clones of him and Tobi Rieder.

The only regret I have is he’s not going to play with Girgs this season. Those two together would’ve been fantastic, especially with Rieder.
Of the three of them, only Girgs is signed next year. I would welcome back Sheahan and Rieder. Great value for the money, even with a raise. It's like their games are impervious to the current suckitude of the Sabres, like lead blocks the rays of Kryptonite.

Not fair for Ullmark.
I'm still counting that as a shutout in my book.
Sabres had 9 centers in the lineup
The Sabres can never have enough centers. After the deficiency of the past decade, we could have 9 centers for the next 6 years and it would only even it out.

Okposo wasn't the fastest guy to begin with, and now he's lost about 3 steps. Might be the slowest forward I've ever seen
Staal is quickly slowly (??) catching up to him.

Nice work by Hall-Staal-Cozens on the Cozens goal. Blackwood didn't help himself by ringing the puck around the corner when he had a d-man in the corner, but that was a great team-work goal. Reminded me briefly of the synchronization Ramsay-Luce-Gare had knowing where each other would be on the forecheck, then bang-bang, puck is in the net.

He had a great game last night, but I disagree. He's a solid #2 goalie. We need a true #1, and Hutton needs to be sent packing . He's an AHL caliber goalie IMO (Hutton).
I have been thinking about this a lot. Ullmark reminds me a bit of Biron who was a very good goalie, but not quite a clear cut number one. If we had a better goalie with Ullmark backing him up, we'd be set.

LOL, Eakin
Cody Eakin will be at bad Vlad whipping boy levels at some point. He wins faceoffs, but even then his % is not sustainable. His career FO % is 50.1. He really doesn't look like a two-way forward at all. It's all fine and dandy to have a shutdown line, but if he and KO get 2-3 goals each, and Toby gets 7, then that line single handedly ruins the entire team. Your third line can't be a black hole. That production wouldn't even qualify as 4th line production.
