Here's another report on Larkin

Shifty with excellent east/west moves and lateral agility - tough to contain. Needs very little time or space to get shots away from the slot, even off balance or on passes in his skates. Kicks passes from his skates up to stick blade in one motion without slowing. Very active running the PP from both the half-boards and down low - makes great cross-crease set ups. Edges well and is smooth out of his breaks with quick, slashing change of direction. Great on the rush, utilizing dynamic puck skill and change of pace. At his best driving aggressively into lanes - not big, but fearlessly bulls his way through checkers to storm the net. Absolutely loves the game; great desire and plays every shift as if it were his last. Determined battler in traffic. Dangerous in open ice and impossible to corral 1-on-1. Terrific stickhandler buys time for linemates to get open, and shows deft passing skills.

Looks like Larkin was their guy or they were going to try to trade back. Interesting.

When people say he's an elite skater, is it comparable to Helm at all?
Larkin was high on the Red Wings' list. Wright said he was "sweating profusely from picks 10 through 14, fearing Larkin would be taken. If he had, Wright said they might have utilized some options to trade down and get a second-round pick.
Yes indeed. That's funny, because I was doing the same thing. Didn't help that McKenzie kept bringing him up.

Neat statistic: Larkin is only about a month and a half from being eligible for 2015. He's one of the younger guys in the draft.

Kempe takes the cake, though. He'd be a 2015 if his birthday were 3 days later. In fact, only Kempe and Jake Virtanen are younger than Larkin in that first round.

One of the oldest last year, one of the youngest this year

From a few days ago

Dylan Larkin told me he is definitely attending the U of Mich next season; will not go to Erie (w/ McDavid). "I'm a Jack Eichel fan anyway"

Already chirpin in his ear

Here were Larkin's linemates this year:

Anders Bjork: http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=183809

and Ryan Hitchcock: http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=150205

Bjork will probably be taken in a later round, but it's unlikely that Hitchcock will be drafted.

and here you can see the entire team's scoring. Note how close Larkin is to Tuch, and especially how far Tuch is from Eichel and Milano.

and in other news, Malik stole Pronman's work again...

26. Dylan Larkin | C | USNTDP (USHL)
DOB: 7/30/96| 2013-14 stats: 60 GP, 31 G, 25 A, 56 PIM

Larkin is one of the top power forwards available in this year's draft class, and is an outstanding skater, one of the best in the class. He has a fine but not outstanding amount of skill, but gains the offensive zone very often due to his skating ability. Larkin has average size (6-0, 192 pounds), but he's pretty strong on the puck and has a fantastic on-ice work ethic. He drives the net, muscles out opponents in battles and gets back on defense effectively. He kills penalties well and he can be a shorthanded scoring threat. Another plus: Larkin plays both wing and center effectively. He's committed to the University of Michigan for the 2014-15 season.

"I've never seen this kid play a bad game," Wright said. "He may not have been the best player every game, but this guy, he drives the bus for that team, and a very good team. I knew he was going to be one of those guys that was going to be high-up on our boards. He was no. 1."

from that HSJ article.

favorite choice on a player since curtis lazar. We got a winner here solid dependable gonna be a mainstay and leader imo big time. Safest choice and best choice where we picked I had him very high but he brings more than stats.

There is nothing not to like on this kid. Probably major steal down the road will play all three zones well maybe top line guy of future for sure top six workhorse.

So happy for him and detroit!!

for fans university of michigans guys in pros right now jeez

If you dont want curtis lazar on this team people I dont know what brand of hockey you are trying to instill for our future success? Larkin can be the next lazar and lazar will have big value.

I dont see him as good as bergeron but callahan type? Sure. Kid can play has no weaknesses really I like him a lot more than sheahan.

P.S. I do not believe he goes to michigan full term. Think he will be on wings in 3 years tops. He is gonna be too good. You can hate the pick or not but this kid can play lead does everything well and will PAY THE PRICE to win and makes EVERYONE better he plays with.

Those guys are rare in this league. I think we really did well. I super stoked and in time? The doubters? Think you will all come around this is a kid we will love in the future on this team.

Was waiting for his name to arrive in terms of Lazar. Interestingly I was super low on Lazar especially in his draft year given the talent that would still be around when he went.

Which is what I find interesting for those wanting us to reach this year. Those players were not great reaches in my opinion and that is a large part of what you saw where people followed the board last night.

I get the reason people will say Lazar, but honestly Larkin plays heavier and is a better skater. I don't think he necessarily has the skill set Lazar has, but he doesn't think he has it either which is part of my problem with Lazar. Was very happy Ottawa took him before us and I think Larkin is a different player. A heavier player, a faster player and a better defensive player. Maybe not the offensive ceiling, but I like him more than Lazar who I found a touch overrated especially in his draft year with immense talent all around him and lower developmental curve still left and shorter time frame in terms of team fit and timeline. That would have been a safe pick I hated.

I agree he's a safe pick and he sounds like a kid with his head on straight which is good. I also agree he'll follow the top college prospect route and turn pro after his third year. It'll be interesting to follow his development and see if he's a true center or if he gets moved to wing.

I think that will be more telling when he reaches pro hockey. Hard to see him not doing well in the center ice role in the NCAA. I do think the good thing is Red moves guys around so he will likely develop in multiple roles but I expect him to settle in at center especially with the larger ice surfaces you encounter on some of the NCAA rinks, it makes so much sense for him to be the hard working pivot. Though he might start this year on the wing, if he doesn't I think that really says a lot already as Red is pretty conservative with his younger guys, the exceptional guys do usually break that mold though and I think Larkin has a chance to do just that.

I think this is a fine pick. Center depth is at a premium and with Jarnkrok in Nashville getting reloaded at the C position was important. I think he fits the NHL game really well with his size and speed combination. Obviously most of us over 30 will be dead and gone by the time he gets to play NHL games if the current Red Wing prospect development strategy holds, but future generations of Red Wings fans should be really happy about this pick.
