no he's not on their level. but bergeron is close.

and bergeron and krejci are still at least tier above what sheahan and larkin project to be.

Well how do you think Bergeron and Krejci projected when they were 2nd round picks? That's more to my point.

This is entirely conjecture, but I suspect NHL scouts have seen the success of said player types in previous years and are now putting and emphasis on the skills guys like Krejci and Bergeron displayed at an early age, thus selecting said players higher in the draft.

bergeron played in NHL following his draft year. it took 4 years for sheahan to do that. might be close to same for larkin.

i consider the odds of larkin and sheahan becoming as good as them fairly slim.

and even if they do there happens to be one big missing piece.. literally and figuratively. zdeno chara.

and it's not like i have anything against larkin and sheahan. fine pieces. if larkin becomes solid 2nd line C he is very good pick at #15. historically, that position has produced mostly crap.

the issue i have more is team building. i don't see this leading anywhere but medicority. would be glad to be proven wrong though :).

Friggin Harry Potter over here lol.

That's a really safe position. The vast majority of teams will end up mediocre. It's a bell curve like that.

You're going to be right 85-90% of the time. So from a pure probability standpoint, I'm with you.

One interesting point on Larkin is he has already packed on 20 lbs at UMNTDP. Looks like he has some more to pack on that frame and we know he is familiar with the weight room as they use the U of M athletic facilities, so no stranger.

I do think it would be interesting if he goes the OHL route though, having his rights owned by Erie does make that interesting as I expect a big push. They are probably the most upset people that we got a hold of him.

Similarly to Sheahan, I think we can reasonably expect to get a passable 3rd line C. If things go right with his development we might wind up with an above average 2C. I think we got ourselves a future NHL player today.

Now we just wait for Hakan to plant his magic beans tomorrow.

The Wings are on the Boston model people. They have elite wingers (or that is the position we hope is like that in the future) and what they have is horse two way center prospects.

Sheahan and Larkin have skill, but what they will allow is players to fly the zone, are incredible board guys and have positional sense that will drive other teams insane. We will see, but Larkin is a good pick and he fits the organizational thrust of speed. You don't worry about Sheahan or Larkin keeping pace with our wingers and that will be important finding centers that don't get stretched the same way most would with the aggressive pushes Nyquist, Tatar and Mantha are capable of, it is a little harder than most think even at the NHL level.

Well said, although I think they'll always be more of a possession team.

The thing that disappoints me most about this pick is it feels like a 30th overall choice, not a 15th.

Yeah, he's basically Riley Sheahan. The main difference is he'll get to work on his offense at Michigan since the Wolverines have absolutely no idea how to play in their own end of the ice. :naughty:

He is very young so we will see, but he and Compher offer a pretty impressive one two punch for U of M. We will see where it goes but that is a lot of power and 200 foot presence on that team.

Even though they rated him worse than any other scouting report I've seen so far (23rd) the description of Larkin seems like a more talented version of either Helm or Sheahan.

from Last word on sports scouting reports

Dylan Larkin is a very strong skater, with strong top end speed, very good acceleration, and a great first step. This enables him to be very effective on the forecheck, as well as to gather loose pucks in all three zones of the ice. Larkin also has outstanding edgework and agility and can be extremely elusive. He has good balance and is very difficult to knock off the puck making him very effective in the cycle game and in battles for pucks along the boards. Larkin should only get better as he adds more muscle to his frame and fleshes out his game in the pros.

Larkin is more of a shooter than a passer, as he has a good wrist shot and strong release. He is also effective at finding open areas for one-timers. Larkin creates offense through straight ahead simple plays, more than from being overly fancy and creative. He makes the smart play though and is willing to go to the net hard. He can be effective with soft hands in tight to bury rebounds and create tip ins. Larkin does have good hockey sense and plays a pro-style game now. He doesn’t make a lot of those little plays that work in junior hockey, but won’t work going forward that are seen from many prospects at his age.

Larkin is extremely advanced defensively for a young player. He knows how to keep his man to the outside and cut down passing and shooting lanes. He backchecks hard, and supports his defence down low against the cycle game. Larkin is more than willing to put his body on the line and block shots. While we don’t have face-off stats, observation shows that he has been good in the circle and wins a lot of draws. Larkin has shown a high compete level in all three zones, but he can be more effective physically as he adds more muscle on his frame.

In terms of style Larkin is reminiscent of Patrice Bergeron of the Boston Bruins.

Read that scouting report then picture him getting puck handling/protection lessons from Datsyuk and you have a future #1 center.

I kind of hope the Wings convince him to go to Erie rather than the U of M though, I'd like to see him make the team a little quicker than he will going the NCAA route.

No way the Wings push him away from U of M - hell it's probably one of the pluses they considered when drafting him.

Think Larkin is a better, faster skater than Sheahan (who is a good skater in his own right), better offensive skills and just has a little more upside. Reminds me of Ryan Kesler, that's roughly the career projection I see for him.

I honestly think the fact that he's going to UofM to learn under Red was a big selling point to the Wings. I'm with you though in that I'd love to see what he can do with some tutelage from Datsyuk.

I like this pick. I thought it was meh initially and probably still would have preferred McCann, but I'm cool with this. Strong two-way centers surrounded by scoring wingers, all of them with decent size and/or speed. I think that is the route the team is going, as has been said above. Between Larkin, Sheahan, Nosek and Helm, I think our middle 6 center depth is looking good going forward. Maybe some will break through their ceiling and if not, people are always looking for good two-way centers. I wasn't really expecting a first line center going in and Fabbri doesn't even really project as one anyways. So, all things considered, not a bad pick.

"I remember going to all the parades (after the Stanley Cup victories) and the excitement they brought to the community," Larkin said. "It's the team I always watched growing up. My favorite players were Steve Yzerman and Nicklas Lidstrom.
Sounds like he'll be at home.

Another thing worth mentioning is that because he's so close by, he can attend things that other college guys can't attend. For example, some college guys have to miss out on some part of the camps that their NHL team puts on because they'd have to pay their way. In this case, Larkin can probably go to Traverse City and so on.

That's actually the player comparison the TSN crew used. Some sort of cross between Bergeron and Kesler? Not bad at all.

Looks like Larkin was their guy or they were going to try to trade back. Interesting.

When people say he's an elite skater, is it comparable to Helm at all?

Just got home after staying in the bubble and watched the draft....I wanted Larkin at the pick if he was there for quite some time now..... very, very happy with the pick. Larkin is the style of player you win cups with.

yeah, good to hear that they were targeting him all along.

hopefully wright proves to be as valuable as mcdonnell was. btw, nill said they were looking to trade back but couldn't find the right deal.
