I spent most of the off season stating it was ridiculous they were going to put him in as a starter. He can't hit.

Those guys have proven they can actually hit at the major league level.
They had pedigree as either top prospects or top young players. They have a hit tool so although they've started off very slow they get the benefit of the doubt that it will turn around.
