I am running with the idea that current events killed any chance of him ever coming over.
I had the same thought. I honestly don’t think there’s much of a chance Muk could come over either, even with his contract. It’s simply not up to them whether they’re allowed to leave the country. And you can bet Putin is aware of what the optics would be with a mass exodus of Russian players to other pro leagues.

Dunno, the massive brain drain going to neighboring ex-Soviet republics seems to show that there's not a lot of tide stemming going on.

this is now politics here.

stopping the war should have priority over gritsyuk or the devils. i wouldn't mind, if no russian can be signed to new nhl contracts or no russians can be drafted. all the pressure possible to stop the killing.

The relationship between Putin and the KHL is pretty complicated. Many KHL owners are oligarchs currently being sanctioned by the US and Europe.

Jokerit and Riga already withdrew from the league this season, meaning four teams have left the KHL in the past five years. Many others are not doing well financially.

It's really, really difficult to know how that league is going to be functioning a year from now.
Could you imagine a crazy scenario where the KHL collapsed???

Aren't the only financially well-off clubs CKSA Moscow and SKA St. Petersburg? And that's because they're owned by, respectively, Rosneft & Gazprom. I also can't see Kunlun Red Star coming back- it's still almost impossible to travel internationally from China to the rest of the world, and the Beijing Winter Olympics are over and so is the CCP's campaign of trying to gas up ice hockey to the public.

Political situation aside, if the KHL dies, players gotta play and get paid. Perversely, that might be the best opportunity to get guys over. But the fog of war is still heavy.

Not to get all political here, but stopping people from signing NHL contracts simply because of where they where born exerts zero pressure on the Russian government and is nothing but a way to make people feel like they're helping so they don't have to come to terms with the fact they're powerless because of 30 years of past NATO decisions. No different to me than, say, not performing Tchaikovsky simply because he's Russian.

If a dude wants to leave Russia to play in North America, that's a pretty good sign that he's not committed to Russian nationalism, no? Why punish him for that?

lol Yeah not allowing Russian players to come over is just giving Russian leaders what they want.

I think about 2 years from now and how much shock the casual fan base may be in for when this guy shows up out of nowhere.
The casual fan doesn't hear about Devils prospects the same way we hear about Toronto prospects, that's for sure. I'm a huge Nate Robertson fan and really like Rasmus Sandin, but after they were drafted the way they were written about you'd think they were Cole Caufield and Rasmus Dahlin.

Meanwhile, Arseni Gritsyuk might be challenging Alexander Holtz for #2 prospect on the Devils rankings, which would make him #1 on 2/3 of the teams in the NHL. The kid is seriously special.

But then Scott Wheeler comes out with his prospect rankings in February and lists Gritsyuk as #7 (!!!) for the Devils behind guys like Really Walsh (#3???) and Tyce Thompson, and you realize people really haven't watched Gritsyuk play. It's like no one knows how good this kid is. By contrast, Scott Wheeler's #9 prospect pool is Carolina, and I think anyone who has seen Gritsyuk would rank him #1 on the Carolina prospect board. #10 is Dallas, and Gritsyuk would be in a battle with Wyatt Johnston for the top spot there, while #13 Philadelphia has no one even close to Gritsyuk in their pool.

Not sure if a casual fan knows much about Luke amd Holtz either. “Oh look! We have twoguys names Hughes on the team ? They both are really fast ! And they seem to score a lot. Hmm cool

I mean if you watch the games at all you'd have to know about Luke and Holtz. Anyone else they're probably clueless
