Whether it be Scrivens or Rask, the Rangers just cannot beat a goalie cleanly for the life of them right now. I have more confidence that they will score on a deflection than on a breakaway. Brassard's goal was a shot through traffic, as were Girardi and Staal's goals last week against NJ, and Cally deflected Richards' shot on Saturday. They are incapable of executing on a passing play or sniping a corner, and should probably focus on screening the goalie, taking shots from the point, and crashing the net instead of the fancy stuff.

So far as Lundqvist goes, he really has no margin for error. The Rangers are averaging 2.05 goals per game so he has to either pitch a shutout or let in only one goal to give the Rangers a chance to win on most nights. Everyone's concerned about what type of contract Lundqvist will demand from Sather, but not many people are considering that he may have had enough once and for all and could go to a team that will finally give him adequate goal support.

Good effort, got to find a way to win these games and finish, my favorite part of the game was when Boyle flattened Chara-stein...haha

Guess this is what it's like on the other side... Usually when we play the Bruins they completely dominate us, Hank stands on his head, we score 1 or 2 goals and win.

The problem is this same type of scenario played out 3 of the last 4 games. If this game was an outlier I'd tip my hat to Rask and be done with it.

Yeah, but I want to believe that things will open up and some of these pucks will start finding the back of the net, now that Nash is back in the lineup.

It's funny, when this team would go down by a goal or two in the Torts system, I felt like they had no chance of coming back at all. But with this team/system even though they are not lighting the lamp, it just feels like they can break out at any time. They are getting tons of opportunities, they just to to finish/break through.

Also it would be nice to see Stepan find his game, he just seems to be invisible out there for periods at a time.

I'd say it was a meh shot and a meh save. Nothing special on either side of that play.

Think that's more luck for Rask than a "meh shot". Kreider put it right between the arm and the body, and Rask's jersey got a piece of it.

Still though, let's see some dekes out there. Kreider just rips one on the penalty shot, then again on his later breakaway. Nash had a partial breakaway too, and instead of power moving to the net, took a shot short-side that was pretty easily turned away by Rask. These guys have moves, let's see them.

On Kreider's second breakaway of the game (I know that's not what's being discussed) to me it looked like it got the shaft of the stick, and not the blocker. Need to see another replay.

2) Stepan, Kreider, Zuccs line should be broken up. This line has no finish. Stepan and Zuccs are pass first players.

The coaching staff needs to get on Zucc's ass and tell him to shoot more. He's got a pretty wicked wrister, let's see it.

Curious, do you consider Kreider's penalty shot a good save, or a bad attempt?

Somewhere in the middle. I thought it was a fairly weak attempt. He didn't have much snap on his release and I do not understand coming in so slow.

If you know you are going to shoot then at least come in with speed and try to back the goalie up a bit.

People not named Nylander that come in on PS slow drive me nuts.

Not only did he pass up on shooting opportunities, but it seemed like each time he did the puck came straight back the other way into our zone.

Up front there are so many people that need to elevate their games.

Nash gets a pass for a while (obviously) but Stepan, Richards and Callahan need to pull their heads out of each others *****.

Callahan worries me the most. He hasn't been a consistently effective player at ES in a good long while. And I do not even mean offensively productive. The last two seasons he has gone through stretches where he is a turnover machine.

Every time he does that stupid no look backhand pass from behind the net, only to see it go straight through the slot and onto the stick of the other team for a convenient breakout, I want to bang my head against the wall.

They lost 1-0 and 2-1 to two very good teams. I am confident in this team moving forward. Nash looked alright last night but will get better.

24 is playing with one hand . Going forward though unless he takes a serious hometown discount the NYR future might be better well spent on a player with more size and younger .
Mike Peca
Mike Comrie
Chris Drury three players who come to mind who played a tough physical all situations game who eventually became bad contracts and less productive plAyers . cally is a warrior and heart and soul guy but not irreplaceable by a younger , stronger less injury prone player going forward .
The Rangers developed Cally , he served them well but let a team ready to win this season perhaps give up a # 1 or top prospect for him in order to go over the top . Of Brian Efffin Leetch could be sold as a rental 24 should be a no brainer . Same guys for G .

So in a stretch where no one on the team are actually able to score a goal, some of you are advocating breaking up the line that creates the biggest scoring chances ?

Yesterday the team played solid solid hockey, I honestly dont want to touch the lines going into the next match

Say what you want about that play, even if you say it was unstoppable (which you didn't), that was NOT a clean breakaway, he had Cally on his ass.

Ok it wasn't a clean breakaway, but Callahan was completely ineffective on it. He barely could get a stick on his legs. He didn't impede the attacker's progress whatsoever - he needed to be making body contact or close enough to light/interfere with his stick. I would have felt just as comfortable on that breakaway. It was a good goal.

Just read Hank in the last 9 games has a 1.68 gaa, .938 sv% along with a shutout. I could see if he was letting soft goals in late in the third but he's not, a very small number of the goals I consider were soft. But those happen to every goalie. Goalies get scored on.

It seems like for some, if anything goes in on Hank, it's a soft goal and he let them down. Even if it's the only goal he let in with still 30 mins left to play.

People need to seriously get off Hank.

People cant blame Tortorella anymore, so now they're blaming Lundqvist because this team cant score goals. Its always something.

I like what I've seen from Vigneault's system. He just doesnt have the horses to take it to the finish line. New coach, new system, and a team that still cant score goals consistently. Just goes to show you the core problem continues to be personnel and, particularly, the guy that constructs this team.

If we could finish, that game might have been 4 or 5 to 2. Then everyone would be talking about how amazing Hank played. A goal tender can't be blamed for a loss, he played well, but this team needs to finish and capitalize on their chances.

Stepan, Richards, Callahan have all been pretty awful. They need to step it the F up.

Great post, wish people like SnowBLIND, weren't so BLIND to reality.

scoring none, 1 or 2 goals per game doesnt allow much wiggle room for hank. the pressure on him to not let in a softie is enormous. hes got to be nearly perfect for us to win many nights.

hes said so in so many words before. its tough knowing that if he lets in 2 goals we probably lose.

hanks not the problem.

It was a soft backhanded shot five hole. That's not the kind of shot most players get on a breakaway if someone's not impeding you. Sometimes, players go backhand forehand and slide a backhand between the legs, but he didn't even do that.

The problem is, while Hank is not allowing a lot of goals his team isn't allowing a lot of opportunities. He also gave up a soft goal in at least 3 one goal losses (Ana, NJ, Bos). Two of those he really didn't face much, he did have some tougher chances against NJ. It's not one game.
