Rubtsov is a more natural center, but I don't think he's at NHL pace or strength yet. Which is not a surprise given he missed most of last season.

It's not an "anomaly," it reflects certain situations where a team makes a transition, in St Louis it was accidental, new goalie, new coach, but when it works you have a hot team going into the playoffs.
AV has done this twice:
2006-07 Van: 9-10-1 then 40-16-6 the rest of the season (2nd rd)
2007-08 Van: 10-8-2 then 29-25-8
2008-09 Van: 12-6-2 then 33-21-8 (2nd rd)
2009-10 Van: 10-10-0 then 39-18-5 (2nd rd)
2010-11 Van: 10-7-3 then 44-12-6 (SC)
2011-12 Van: 10-9-1 then 41-13-8 (1st rd)
2012-13 Van: 11-5-4 then 15-10-3 (1st rd)
Tort came in next season and went 36-35-11
2013-14 NYR: 10-10-0 then 35-21-6 (SC)
2014-15 NYR: 9-7-4 then 44-25-3 (CF)
2015-16 NYR: 15-3-2 then 31-24-7 (1st rd)
2016-17 NYR: 14-5-1 then 34-23-5 (2nd rd)
Strangely enough, his first year with Montreal, 13-5-2 his first 20 games, then 24-27-11, so much for starting hot!
