I'd cave on dollars before caving on term.

You definitely don't need to start negotiation with $13 million AAV though. That's not in line with his production.
He's got all of the "generational" draft hype behind him and can argue his numbers are suppressed from organizational inability to surround him with effective talent. These players ans agents are wising up to the fact that their productive years are in their early/mid twenties and they should be paid accordingly.

That's fine, if at the end of the day, if he's paid 13.5 % and plays like a guy worth 12.5 % because Bedard is the Franchise player the draft gods gave you, and that's who you're going to have to bet on. But I'm just saying, $13 million right now is a big ask off the jump. It's not the end of the world if Bedard wants to see if he gets 100 points next year before putting ink to paper, I'm just saying in no world do you let him sign a 5 year deal in which scenario the best case is he re-ups for more in 5 years and worst case he walks into UFA. I'd demand Davidson's head if he signed Bedard to a 5-year extension.

Would be fairly easy to say that he's had better linemates this year than last and has had zero real notable progression to his game.

Players should be getting better noticeably each year around this age. Also guys like Michkov and Celebrini are producing at the same rate so unless 3 generational players entered the league all at once it would be hard to sell that he is head and shoulders above all young players and his stock is the exact same as when he entered the league with all that hype.

Bedard himself said that he played himself off of Team Canada for the Four Nations
