You are 100% correct, IMO. By CF Rel%, DeAngelo was far and away the best defenseman we had (excluding Smith who doesn't count). I believe Skjei was only better than Fox. xGF% Rel they were third and fourth.
I felt like DeAngelo was getting turnstiled all game long...and then staal was being staal.

DeAngelo was also throwing limp noodle unscreened shots on net which are worthless.

I hated what I saw with them

Frankly not a single defenseman looked good out there except trouba who looked great.

Howden with the garbage goal winner. Isn't that the kind of player he's projected to be?
To a degree. He's big and will hopefully get stronger so he can play down there. But he's also still skilled, particularly as a playmaker, to the degree that some people see him as a potential second line center still.

Yeah no one should be fooled into thinking there aren't going to be many rough nights this year. They got absolutely plastered on shot attempts lol.

The first 10 minutes was completely dictated by Winnipeg because of the 2 penalties, and they also had 5 PPs to 2 for the Rangers. They better get more shot attempts. Not to mention, Winnipeg is one of the most offensively talented teams in the league. It was always going to be a tough task to outshoot them as a pretty new team that was put together this summer.

DeAngelo was at least good on the breakout.

His shots were mostly easily blocked but his passing was superb.

Agreed and that ties into what I said during the GDT about this representing the most exciting and most difficult aspects of what watching this team may entail this season.

There’s some legit dangerous offensive firepower on this team. Guys who can/should back teams up.

But holy cow this team needs to make other teams uncomfortable when they have the puck. A lot of loose coverage, chasing, etc.

There were too many moments where Jets’ players didn’t feel nearly claustrophobic enough.

Great exciting game. We got outplayed by the Jets but held on and this is a game we would have lost last year. Nice to start things off on a positive note, Hank gave up 4 goals but he will be happy with the W.

In general.

I think it made things more challenging for him than it needed to be and didn’t do him any favors on the Wheeler goal.
Oh I gotcha I wasn’t sure if you were referring to a particular play.

I don’t entirely agree but I guess it was a little scrambley at times but it certainly wasn’t anything to discourage me about him going forward considering the amount of tough saves he made. I mean Winnipeg had 47 shots and was in our end most of the night. It’s gonna look hectic back there as a result.

Well I wasn't sure I'd manage to stay awake for all three periods but I'm sure glad I did, that was plenty entertaining

Also, confession time: I always figured I was a Webster for Mika. I came here with him and I used to think I'd leave with him too if/when it came to that, but honestly I'm feeling that blue in my veins and I ****ing love the rangers!! Ready for the future!! :pcheer:

It's why I chuckled at the "Tony DeAngelo is our #1D" posts over the past few months. Dude does some things really well--like he can really toss that biscuit around beautifully. He has some other areas with pretty significant deficiencies. Maybe in time, but right now Trouba is by far the best defenseman we have and clearly the best since prime McDonagh (arguably better).

And in fairness, and to your point, it’s not all on him either.

This team gave Winnipeg way too much time to decide where to put the puck. That approach, IMO, only exacerbates the problem.

Since I had to listen to the game and didn't see it, did Skjei benefit at all from Trouba's play?
No he still looked horrible. The whole night it was like Trouba dominating and then some other guy was also playing defense. I mean you could have had any of the other LD there and it would have looked the same. Maybe when they start to gel it will be better.

Skjei was awful. He had 1 good offensive give and go type play but other than that he was a disaster. Again no dman was good except trouba who was outstanding. The other 5 struggled badly.

Didn't play as well as I'd like, but a win is a win and the newbies showed positive signs. So, I'll take it

I thought Trouba was carrying him for a while. Skjei was awful the first period but by the third he was quite better.
