Don't blame the goalie!
He had his moments, but the way he'd quit on a play sent me over the hills too many timesI remember there were a few times he lined up as our number 1 center....

Hajek is playing a little reckless...in that he's putting himself in a position to get rocked by holding on to pucks too long or going right after the puck when guys are about to smash him into Oblivion. Sometimes it's better to let the other guy have the puck if you don't have the ability to do anything with it and are going to get smashed. You take yourself out of the play when that happens rather than setting up a defensive scheme....with that said there is a lot to like about his game, and a lot of the plays he got rocked on were direct results of poor passes from fox who had a very jittery first game (as expected)Teams are going to target young D like Hajek and Fox. Hajek's been taking a pounding and he seems to be getting a bit gun shy. They were crowded pretty good last night. We'll need to give him some games (10?-15?) and see if he can work his way through it. The Rangers like him--he's got the size and the skillset. Maybe sometimes he needs to move the puck a little bit quicker--maybe sometimes he needs to push back more.
Truth. The defenders are really good on the rush. Going the other way they need some work. But that's on everyone. Not just the defensemen. So much potential.Jets will likely have many games where they score 5 a game...they are flat out offense all the way . I think we did OK for so many new faces...going to take some time for things to all gel . I love the way our D handles the puck in the O zone versus Staal-MacDonagh-Girardi years ....quite the difference and with more skilled guys up front for them to pass off the puck....we will likely closely resemble the Peg in many ways moving forward . That's not a bad thing once we add Miller and maybe another young D along the way .
I think Lias' 5v5 ice time dropping was largely in part to the penalties taken early on that threw the rotations out of rhythm, especially Lemieux's dumb roughing penalty in the 2nd. Plus, Maurice started really heavily rolling his top-line and Connor/Laine as the game progressed. If they clean up their game, I think we'll see a much more even rotation of the lines against Ottawa tomorrow.
Another big issue I'm going to keep harping on this year is how bad they are at defending in transition. Jets created a huge chance on a 3v3 rush with Morrissey, Scheif, and Wheeler against Staal-ADA and Kreider because of a communication breakdown b/w Staal and Kreider. Morrissey dumped it off to Wheeler at the high right board and filled his lane rushing down the right side. As a result, ADA shifted over to the right, and Staal veered off to take on Morrissey. However, that switch opened a massive passing lane for Wheeler who hit a streaking Scheifele for a mini-breakaway in on Hank. Staal shifting takes his stick out of the lane and leaves Kreider in a bad position defending Scheifele's outside shoulder; Kreider ****ed up here too by hesitating for a split second once Staal shifted.
A straight-ahead 3v3 rush like this shouldn't turn into a grade-A chance so easily. If they're going to yield them the blue line, at least make sure you're going to clogging lanes and taking away the slot from your opponent. This isn't really complicated stuff.
We're not supposed to win yet specifically bc this is the type of team we have just 2 years into a rebuild so this is ok.I give the Rangers credit for a hard fought victory. But I have to say, we need to do something on the blueline, or we will not come away with many wins the way we played tonight. We will not win by double shifting Brady Skjei.
Some thoughts here.Thought Jesper Fast had a hell of a game.
Hajek looked very shaky except one shift next to Trouba. Took a bunch of big hits because he was slow with his decision making. I'd consider keeping Lindgren in on stand-by. You play the more sure-handed kid at this point. Will be interesting to see how this unfolds. Hajek was much more deterministic during the 5 games last year.
Zibs outplayed Schiefele for and had a big game for the Rangers. Loved what he's doing out there.
Trouba got the Trruuuuus, and had a nice grin on his face skating out there. Not sure he expected that, but he played like a real deal number 1 last night.
Bread- didn't get a lot of touches, but when he did. Last night was a casual gamebreaking night for him.
Kakko had a couple of good net drives. Think we will see more.
DeAngelo got beat on speed twice, and had one turnover that cost a goal or a scoring chance against. Those have got to come out of his game.
Thought the coaching staff made some smart moves with their shifts last night as the game went along.
Thoughts
That was way more stressful than fun lol; absolutely no structure to speak of particularly in the 2nd period where we got a healthy skull****ing.
This is, clearly, a team with not much time together and a lot of new faces. I don't think it'll be this bad every night but getting pounded like we did doesn't really surprise me.
I thought the bottom 6 played pretty well. Particularly Lias and Lemieux. They graded out very highly in xGF% and possession.
Trouba was our best D AINEC. Everyone else should get off the ice.
Strome line was hot garbage Three players that just exist at the same time. No chemistry at all
I don't think Staal and TDA were that bad but they were bad. I don't love this developing trend of Staal being a triggerman, though.
Win against Ottawa and then you have a lot of practicing to do.
Some thoughts here.
I agree regarding Lindgren and thought that he outplayed Hajek in camp.
Thought that Kakko had a solid, if unspectacular game. Nothing wrong with that for an 18 year old.
Skej......YIKES!
Thought that Staal had a solid, third pairing game.
Overall, the defense has issues. Yes, they are young (mostly), but the positioning was mostly awful. Beginning to be more and more convinced that Ruff is a part of the problem. Unfortunately, he is going nowhere this year. 47 shots on goal is not acceptable. Nor is the opposing team seeming like they are practicing the power play for big stretches of time.
Howden was pretty poor....right up until he scored the goal. Meanwhile no idea of why Andersson was not on the ice at all basically for the entire third. Lemieux did pretty well with his minutes and thought that he deserved more as well. Really hope that he and Andersson are not buried on the 4th line for most of the season.
ADA with 7 giveaways last night. thats not his game. im sure it was nerves and some pressures too.
mika was an absolute monster. he and trouba showed up big time.
pegs D was hot garbage. ours was better but its expected first game jitters and facing that team is a nightmare.
overall, 6-4 win feels good.
i think this game will mirror this team early maybe first 25 games.
lethal PP. dangerous first line. solid PK. bottom 6 that works hard and is tough to play against.
leaky defense until they gel.
solid net play.
many 5-4 games.

he looked small last night, tiny.Teams are going to target young D like Hajek and Fox. Hajek's been taking a pounding and he seems to be getting a bit gun shy. It's really the fundamentals that this team falls short on. There were some positive signs, but overall I think the Rangers need to defense like how the Panthers defended under Gallant, and how Vegas does now.
I'm okay with a 33-35 shot against game, but 47 is unacceptable. It's also that the shots should be coming from the outside with passing options taken away. If Hellebuyk had a better night last night, then we would be talking about a deserved loss.
With the way the Rangers are, I think they as a team need to communicate more on the ice to become better. This happened in the early Renney, Torts, and AV days where guys would demonstrably direct one another.
There were way too many unforced errors. Multiple players and turnovers coming out of the D-Zone.
Some thoughts here.
