So let’s say age and inevitable slowing/breakdown of our three big contracts is occurring.
Getz still drives play. Early in season, he was great. He looked hobbled before All Star break.
Kesler looks ruined
Perry has had a bad knee he has played through for a long time, and still put up points.

Now, let’s talk about player usage. Under Carlyle, Getz and KEsler played in every situation and very hard minutes. Even when dinged up, they were on the ice for PK,PP, end of game, important faceoffs, etc

For years, many fans have pointed out that we were running them into the ground, and it showed at the end of the year each season.
Keslers use after his current injury is one of the strongest points for how badly Carlyle manages things, and it COULD be argued some of the decline of these players is overplaying them

But I’m not worried about Getz.....the other two.......worried

All this talk about players quitting on the coach, or just getting older and slower is 100% proof that this all lies with Bob. If he had replaced RC last summer, it would be much easier to evaluate the players now. Without a doubt the players own a lot of what's happened, but without better bench leadership entrusted to get the best out of each player, I'd hate to see trades made just for the sake of shaking things up. That would be compounding Bob's first big mistake of not hiring a new coach when he publicly admitted he wanted the team to transition to a new style of play that was very foreign to this team and this coach. That was the time to turn the page and build a new chapter in Ducks history. But, that didn't happen.

A fish rots from the head down. Bob's at a critical point where he either acknowledges his earlier mistake (keeping Randy this summer) and doesn't compound the problem (trading core pieces now) or he doubles down on his first mistake and makes trades to support the bad first decision. I guess we will see how it plays out. Stay tuned.

People pointing to the defense as the issue should take a small step back and remember that hockey is very much a free-flowing sport and is very much a team game. It is not like football where only your offense is on the field and then only your defense is on the field. If forwards can't maintain possession in the offensive zone and generate offense, and if they can't help to slow the play down and muck things up in the neutral zone, than the ice is always tilted towards your defensive zone. If that happens consistently throughout a game against an NHL caliber offense, they will generate a lot of scoring chances and score a lot and make your defense and your forwards look bad while doing it. It won't matter how good your defensemen are.

That's the simplest way I can put it, but the team's struggles this year are not due to regression by our D. It is a team-wide issue of not being able to maintain offensive zone pressure and not being able to slow teams down through the neutral zone, so the ice is always tilted towards our defensive zone.

Our shifts are like 30 seconds of defending in our zone trying to keep play to the perimeter, followed by an eventual breakout and either a dump in or a carry in by one guy while everybody else changes. We lose possession all the time in the O zone because of this, and so it just goes back to another 30 second shift of defense because none of the fresh guys coming on the ice can forecheck quick enough or fiesty enough to generate turnovers and no one seems to know what the heck to do to slow teams down through the neutral zone.

Yes it's terrible coaching and yes the defense hasn't been great all the time, but more than anything it is forwards not playing hard enough to win battles, beat guys out to 50/50 pucks, generate turnovers in the offensive and neutral zones, and work hard along the boards to sustain any pressure down low in the offensive zone.

The biggest problem with the team right now isn't the coach. I want Carlyle to stick around because he's lost the ability to influence the team in any possible way, thus ensuring a high draft pick.

The biggest problem is that we can't even do a proper rebuild until Kesler and Perry's contracts are off the the team's salary. BM really screwed the team with some of these contracts.

So let's see how the Ducks are getting on in the first 3 games of the road trip. They now:

  • are the lowest scoring team in hockey
  • have the league's worst goal differential
  • tied with Washington for the 10th worst defensive team in the league (by goals against per game)
  • have the 3rd worst power play in the league
  • are in the middle of the pack on the penalty kill (18th)
Also, they have remarkably been passed up in the standings by a suddenly streaking Blackhawks team. They now have the 6th overall pick, and the Panthers are one back with 3 games in hand, Detroit's 2 back and the Kings are 3 back. They could be sitting in 3rd by the end of this road trip.

This doesn't get talked about nearly enough

Its official the Ducks have the fewest ROW in the league !
We now have a Top 5 pick thanks to Chicago winning. Those 18 ROW come in handy for tie breakers as Chicago has 20 ROW.

Detroit has a game in hand, if they win the Ducks move to #4
Anaheim's inability to get ROWs now is a blessing in disguise lmao.

Remember when Hayward talked about "if they win 3/5 of the games in this road trip they may buy at the trade deadline?"
Hayward should change his name to Bagdad Bob or Joseph Goebbels.

Replacing Hayward with Illya Bryzgalov would be a massive upgrade. If the team sucks again next year at least we'll have fun hearing what Bryz says.

Replacing Hayward with almost anyone would be a massive upgrade

So nothing from bm, or the owners?

I take that as them giving the fans and players the middle finger.

If anything is going to happen (which is seemingly highly unlikely) or if a statement is made it will happen in the morning.

The lack of money we have to spend is the huge problem looking past this season. We have got to try to make moves that decrease our payroll. This team is pressed up against the cap and isn’t close to good enough. Time to accept that and start clearing operating room for the future.

Brian Hayward’s “How to lose and feel good about it...”

Give up an insurmountable number of goals in the first and then play the rest of the game as if the score was tied. The opposing team backs off a bit, we get a goal or two, and then focus on the positives of the last 2 periods regardless of the final score.

And yet they're only 3 points behind Vancouver for the last wild card spot. The west is so bad it's not even funny.

It depends on which way you look at it. We could potentially have 5 main stays on the roster next season with ELC.

Terry
Steel
Jones
Mahura
(Top 5 pick hopefully.)

That should help balance the bad contracts.

And throw Comtois as a possible in there too... if he can keep up even half of what he was doing at the beginning of the season.
