What's the risk in letting MZA prove it rather than just give it to him after one good year? 1 Million a season.
What people want
4 Years 4.5 M per year
What happened
1 Year 3.5 M per
What's likely to happen if he does well next year
4 Years 5.5 M per
Relax everyone, it's a good gamble and gives us another 1M to play with this year to win a cup
If Zucc puts up similar numbers to last season, he isn't getting the $4.5 you mentioned, it's more like $5.5. But the real risk isn't the funds, it's him having a good season, which he likely will, and then walking altogether.
I don't see why Brassard would get $4.5M in arbitration. Bryan Little got $4 million on his RFA season. The cap has gone up only 7% since then.
Much like the last 15-20 years, the Rangers have serious issues at center that won't be easily fixed.
However, Im confident they won't overpay Brassard because hes one of the only guys they have. Nail him in arbitration and then reassess.
You think Brooks' information about a $5.2 million+ AAV is wrong?
If things go poorly with Brassard, there is at least one center on the 2015 free agent market who happens to really love playing in New York....

If we give Brassard 5.2-5.5 whats stopping Stepan next year from wanting 6.5-7? he's considerably better than brassard is.
Believe me, the Instagram crowd would love to see Richards back based on their comments.
Personally, I'd look to get Brassard on a two-year deal. It gives you immediate security and also enough time to find a replacement or for someone like Miller to step up. And if O'Reilly (let alone Stamkos or Kopitar) reaches UFA status, then so much the better.

You don't seem to grasp this, but the real risk is him having another good season and then completely walking. The fact you keep mentioning Zuccarello and Brassard in the same wavelength further indicates you don't get it. Zuccarello's 40 assists last seasons are 7 points shy of Brassard's career best points in a season. Add in that Zucc is the better checker, the harder worker, the superior defensive player, and these two aren't too close.

You're wrong.
Zuccarello wants to be in NY.
He could've signed with another NHL team after his first stint in NY. He only wanted to come here.
He's already said they will negotiate an extension in January.
There's zero risk of him walking. The only risk is having to pay him a higher cap-hit on a long term deal next year rather than a lower one if he had signed a long term deal this year.
This was a smart move by Sather, and I wouldn't be surprised if they already have a handshake deal that he'll be extended in January.

Zuccarello said shortly after that it was “brilliant†to sign for one-year and worked out for both sides right now. Zuccarello also said that he was happy to avoid arbitration for the second straight summer.
He added that with the Rangers cap situation where it is, it was best to sign for one year. He adds that it makes him a free agent next summer but he is happy to be with the Rangers and feels that it’s “my club.â€
You should be surprised, because this sort of stuff almost never happens.
