Zayne Parekh vs Sam Dickinson

Both have the top 4 highest PPG in OHL history among 18 year old defenseman.

Parekh is 4th (1.595 ppg) with 67 points in 42 games and has played an extra 8 more games (42).

He improved his pace from last season (1.455) and also had the 4th best PPG in OHL history among 17 year old defenseman


Dickinson has the 3rd highest PPG in OHL history among his age group and position just above Parekh (1.611 PPG) with 58 points in 36 games.

Unlike Parekh who is producing at a similar rate to his last OHL season, Dickinson's production improved significantly compared to last season (70 points in 68 games, 1.029 PPG last year)

Parekh was drafted 2 spots ahead for good reason, but it seems Dickinson has closed the gap offensively this year. Who is the better player now and who do you take going forward?

Overall, I fell in love with Dickinson at the draft and even more today. He was criticized for not being super involved but he’s changing that perception in his D+1. It has to be him.

It all depends what you want really. I had Dickinson higher at the draft and there's nothing that's really changed that now. I know alot of people love Parekh, so I don't blame them for taking him.

Dickinson has the size and great skating, which atleast he'll be a solid NHL defender with those tools. The decision making is questionable so that'll be what can hold him back.

I though Parekh had an edge on Dickinson in his draft year, but after an incredible D+1 season, I think they are about the same level. I'd still take Parekh because I think his best qualities are more elite than Dickinson's best qualities.

I'd trade Levshunov for either of them though

I’m not really sold on Dickinson’s offensive contributions translating relative to the numbers he’s putting up now. Parekh has always been the point producing dman, that’s his game, I can totally see him eclipsing 65-70 points in his prime while providing perhaps slightly less defense but Dickinson doesn’t have nearly the same sort of natural talent the way Parekh does.

Dickinson both stylistically and play style wise reminds me of Morgan Reilly, which is still top 2 D level.

I have seen both live. Both have their strengths. It may be a Flames bias, but I prefer Parekh.

Dickinson isn't nearly as talented offensively as Parekh, but he may translate to the NHL better and he's certainly stronger defensively and physically.

Parekh for me, now and in the future, due to his offensive play style, I feel he will translate better to the current NHL game and he has the tools to do it. That said, for me this is a great comparison and Dickinson is right there, this is not a clear one or the other for me even as a Flames fan.

I’d love to see where Buium fits here as well (though harder to compare at this stage) as I feel that all 3 of these Dmen will be looked at as being drafted later than they should have.

I did a Zeev Buium vs Zayne Parekh poll last season and Zeev won pretty handidly. Unless he's regressed, then I dont see how the result would change this year.

But yeah, Dickinson catching up to Parekh offensively this year is the reason I made the poll.

Both overrated, but I think Dickinson can be a 2/3D at his prime. Parekh at his prime will be a 3/4D.
