Value of: Zaitsev for D (before expansion)

This guy is a very rookie RHD just breaking into the league, already a #4/5 or better, who doesn't need to be protected in the expansion draft.

Leafs plan to protect 7 forwards and 3 dmen... Rielly, Gardiner, and a 3rd dman (none of our other guys are legit top4). There are several teams with 4 (or 5) D they'd like to protect, but only room to protect 3 (or 4).

SO. Which teams might be intetested to make a trade involving a top 4 defenseman and Nikita Zaitsev? I'm not sure Lamiorello would do it, but with the state of our blueline, he will definitely be at least listening.

Then Leafs protect 7 forwards, a goalie, and 3 D (Rielly + Gardiner + guy from Zaitsev trade).

Any interest? I have to imagine SOMEONE has at least a little interest in a still-developing #4 who is expansion exempt.

Why don't the Leafs just trade for someone that's worthwhile to protect (maybe trade for Brodin or Dumba from Minnesota) and then just keep all 4?

Zaitsev doesn't need to be protected and has been our 2nd best D. He is not going to get a better dman then himself so why do this, trade other pieces for a dman to protect is a good plan from a team that will struggle to keep all theirs. Then we would have Rielly, Gardiner, Zaitsev and the traded for dman who we protect we come out with a real top 4 d core

It makes the most sense for a team who's 8th most protection worthy forward isn't equal to or as valuable as their 4th most protection worthy d-man.

Or in the case of a team protecting 4+4 instead of 7+3, it makes the most sense if their 5th most protection worthy forward is not equal to or as valuable as their 5th most protection worthy d-man.

Another good option.

There may be a team really high on Zaitsev looking to maneuver around expansion, who would overpay for Zaitsev. Lou should do his due dilligence to see if such an opportunity is available to him.

There also might be a certain defenseman (or defensemen) that Lou and Babcock covet, that would be available in a Zitsev trade but completely unavailable in your scenario.

You could do both. Get the guy Lou covets more than Zaitsev and then grab a 4th guy at a discount (and pay Vegas not to take the 4th guy).

So your solution to improving the Leafs defence is by trading one of the few good defenceman they have who can still improve into an even better player. Brilliant.

Trading Zaitsev would be one of the bigger mistakes this organization can make besides trading one of the 3 rookie forwards or Rielly. Zaitsev is fantastic and is often one of the best D-men on the ice. He has great vision and puck skills and never panics in his own zone. I have complete faith in him.

What?

Bill Guerin is that you?

This is Lovejoy for Despres 2.0

Is your goal to try to push the Leafs over the top to make them competitive this year or next?

This is very poor asset management.

Instead of dumping him for current top 4 who will be post prime when the Leafs are contenders, how did it not occur to you to let Zaistev grow into a top pairing dman who is in the age range of the cup window for the core?

Or trade him for an even better player and a half decent pick/prospect with high potential. Teams taking on assets that have to be protected in exchange for assets that don't are definitely charging a premium next summer.

I'm not suggesting that we make a fair trade to move Zaitsev. I'm suggesting that the price will go way up for good young guys that don't have to be protected. Maybe we can sell high and look better for it long-term. Worth listening to offers at least.

Lou would be stupid IMO to not see what teams will be willing to pay for him. He has to see if we could get (JUST for example guys) Scandella and Tuch for Zaitsev and a 5th. That's just a fake example, to illustrate that this could possibly be better for us long term. Not saying Wild would offer that.

Zaitsev has easily been the leafs best defensman this year, why trade him? He's a solid #3 that can easily become even better once he full adjusts to NA ice and enters his prime.

unless the return was too good to say no to, why would we want to trade Zaitsev. He's competent playing top pairing minutes, is a top 4 worthy guy today and his upside is probably a competent top pairing guy on a good team. We courted him, he chose to come here, and dealing him now probably doesn't bode well for the Leafs' credibility with Russian UDFA's (where we've done a bit of shopping in the last couple of years)

Don't see a reason to do this unless its a slam dunk, and I think all of the guys that would qualify are worth more to their teams than an extra expansion draft protection slot

He ll play 24-26min a night come April, and all you fools will be so happy he is expansion protected. Not getting traded.

The RFA summer negotiations will be interesting...

Zaitsev is already a #3 with the potential to become a top pair guy as soon as next year.

Majority of Leafs fans would agree that he's basically unavailable

He's already at 22+ mins and drawing matchups like Ovy

We're preparing for a $4.5-5mil price tag, thats the feeling on the leaf board thread about him
