One thing I think Jones could work on... I feel there's times where he tries to impose himself physically where it's really not necessary. And you have to think a lot of that is coaching. He's been scratched many times during his NHL stints. Kinda makes you think that's probably something that they've talked to him about over the years. They want him to be more of a prototypical physical defender, but thats not his game. So he makes these little plays sometimes defensively just to kinda show he can handle the physicality. Like its almost more of a show for the coaches. I don't know, has anyone else got that feeling as well? I'm not sure if I'm doing a justice describing it

Like just as an example... you watch Adam Fox, he's about the same size as Jones. He's obviously one of the best defenseman in the league, so tall order. But you watch him, he doesn't needlessly try to be physical. He knows his limitations. Along the boards if it's not a board scrum he kinda just contains the puck carrier. He doesn't feel the need to get up on the guy for no reason. He's just keeping good stick positioning, trying to take away a passing lane or a particular angle. He only really uses physicality when necessary. In the case of Jones I feel there's times where he'll look to wrap a guy up or engage physically where it's not really the effective play. And don't get me wrong there's times where he uses it properly, but it's something I'd like to see him fine tune.

Because at this point I think that's what will determine whether Jones is a guy you could feel comfortable playing in the top 4 versus just being an offensive D that you need to shield on the bottom pairing. He's loaded with skill. Fox is the only defender on this team that can make the sort of passes and offensive plays that Jones can make.

I know Makar is probably the best defenseman on the planet, but he's not a big guy. When they went to the cup they had him on the top pair and smaller Samuel Girard on the 2nd pair. I know he got hurt on that playoff run that year, but he's been a staple over there for years. Enough so that they were comfortable enough to trade Byram, their former 4th overall pick. So if it comes down to it, I don't think it would be any sort of death sentence to have two sub 6 foot defenders in the top 4. But thats if Jones can manage to be competent defensively.

I still like Jones but it's looking more and more like another kid who has stagnated. I'm done playing the blame game (is it the coaches or players) just stating the obvious.
This org views him as a 7d which is bs

Too many stupid pinches. These Dmen have to remember that without any support from backchecking forwards, don't even think of pinching unless there's a 99% chance of winning the puck.

Not that i disagree about his pinches, but miller was never benched for bad pinches and he is the king of them.

Lindgren doesn't get benched for being just bad.

I think he’s earned the scratch honestly and I say that as one of his fans. The pinches are obvious but he’s not defending well and he’s not making plays with the puck either.

He's earned the scratch for a while. That doesn't mean he has to be a scratch permanently but he could definitely use a game or two of watching and thinking about things he's told in practice. He's wildly overaggresive on the rush and in the offensive zone at times where the risk vastly outweighs the reward. If you have the offensive talent of Makar/Hughes you can play that way but he doesn't.

He's actually been pretty good at defending odd man rushes and breaking up plays with his stick the problem is he's often the guy causing those odd man rushes in the first place.

I'm not particularly confident in his future. Small defenseman that aren't physical don't usually last very long without being elite offensively and he is none of those things. He's probably a journeyman 3rd pair/7th dman and/or elite KHL player.

I wanted him to play in last years playoffs but he has to tighten up including in front of the net.

I've been kind of "meh" on Jones since his second season in Hartford. I'm just not sure he's special at anything, which is tough when you're a small defender.

With that said I would hesitate to read too much into a young player struggling in a season like this. Basically everyone else on defense has been garbage, which is tough. You like to see the cream rose to the top but in a year like this, sometimes everyone looks like they've taken a step back. Whereas when a team is humming along, it looks like everyone has gotten better. Hard to know for sure.

Yep. If he's not being contributing elsewhere, the goals against because of a bad decision to pinch just aren't forgiven. But again, these defencemen are expecting help by a high forward when they pinch. Jones has on occasion just assumed the forward is doing what he's supposed to be doing. You can't assume.

I feel for the guy. Has a great attitude, good work ethic, team first guy, has a good skillset. Overachiever for where he was drafted. And here we are, relegating him once again to 7th defenseman, instead needing to play defensive stalwarts like Urho Vaakanainen.

Similar to Kakko, I hope for his sake he gets traded and lands somewhere with a coach that believes in him and allows him to grow on the ice. It's not going to happen here, sadly.

Why in the world wouldn't you have continued to play him and then trade him if he isn't in your plans...yet another example of poor asset management

Because believe it or not the coaching staff have been making the lineup to get wins not profiling players they want to trade. Whether stories coming out in the press or from people at MSG are saying that Laviolette's job is safe I don't believe it and he's been around long enough and coached so many teams that I don't think he thinks his job is safe either. He desperately wants to turn things around. I watched his press briefing yesterday---how nice and polite Peter was but you could also see his tension. He was reining it in all throughout the several minutes it went.

Jones was a 3rd rounder and that's maybe the best you can expect back for him. His value is about what it was at the beginning of the year. He's not all that much a different player than Nils Lundqvist who is a mostly 6th defenseman and sometimes scratch for Dallas. Nils is a little bigger and stronger and that's helpful. Jones can't help his size but it's tough for a defenseman that small unless they have special qualities and Jones has skills but he doesn't have those special qualities to his game. The skills he has are his strengths but it's not enough. He's not going to be a top 4 NHL defenseman on a good or even average team. He is not a defenseman who can grind which is what most teams want for their 5,6,7 guys.

Most players cannot survive on skills alone. Almost all players have to continually strive to get better at something. In the NHL when a young player plateaus he's f***ed. Jones hasn't been getting better and he's kind of in a Catch 22 situation here.

Jones is a nhl dman but it’s going to be with a team that has some big D . He can PP

Rangers getting bigger I bet

What makes him different than Ty Smith, Adam Boqvist, Calen Addison? Similar sized d-men, that were even earlier picks, that had better junior/AHL/NHL production that pretty much nobody has wanted? They're all the same age too. Smith was traded as a throw in last year and can't make the NHL. Boqvist was bought out and signed a league minimum deal. Addison was non-tendered and then signed a PTO. You can add in Brannstrom too, another similar sized guy, who was non-tendered, signed to a deal under 1M, traded, waived, and unclaimed all this offseason. They're all 24-25 years old.

These small, non physical, dmen are not exactly in high demand unless they are extremely strong offensively. By the time their D+5 came around they all had zero value around the league.

I like Zac. He can skate. I want him to get another chance. With that said he has not played well this season and most the board agreed with him being scratched.

That was already happening on the game tape
Jones played most of the season so he needs to look at himself. To his credit he did admit he has to play better.

I have never seen a softer group of players. Can't imagine some of these guys playing in the 70s and 80s.

I don't know of a single poster who thinks Lindgren should be starting over him.

Is that the level we want our players to be at? I may have played really badly but my teammate played worse? I like Zac and I want to give Zac another chance but this teams weak sauce players are disappointing. Might as well wear some dresses.
