Compher and Copp could literally be the two single worse players in the league, and they have done nothing at any point to hinder the Front Office from making any move that they would want to make from a salary cap standpoint; nor have they, in any way prevented any prospect when moving into the Top 6, C, Wing, or playing in any situation that the coaching staff has wanted to use them in. This idea that Andrew Copp or JT Compher are somehow the thing that is preventing us from being the second coming of the 2002 Detroit Red Wings is the most tired argument on these boards. Period. It is exhausting to hear over and over again. So literally they could be nothing but dead space and you can continue to wave the flag that these are Yzerman's Waterloo and why he's terrible despite you literally seeing the fruits of their plan beginning to bloom...
OR
Maybe, just maybe, you can think about:
a) DET was a terrible free agent destination and no FA of any quality was signing with us because why would they want to go to a team that has no talent, in an obvious rebuild, and was in for a long painful road while they tanked and collected picks and gutted the team every spring and offloaded dead contracts... and despite some incredible 4D Chess move of "JUST SiGN GOOD FAs DAJKLJDA"...why didn't they just listen to HFBoards? Maybe, the good free agents wanted to be part of a good team that could win a Cup, make lots of money, and be have a stable home... are you picking Detroit circa 2019-2021?
So you sign what's there and you don't "overpay", You get Puis Suter and Vaterri Filppula.
So we improve a little bit and get Seider and Raymond in, and have some young talent in the pipeline but now you want a veteran to help cushion the young guys as they come into the league and teach them how to be a pro or you're going to end up like BUF, or OTT, or 2010 EDM with you toss a bunch of stupid 19 year old and leave them to the league. How many UFA 27 C's are looking for that job? Maybe there's a reason why there's a bit of a overpay and Copp and Compher both also happen to have ties from area.
This isn't a video game where you just "outbid" someone and you land the free agent. These are often see this as their opportunity to make a choice and just like with your lives, it's not always about the money. Just like many of you wouldn't join a company that you felt was going to fail for a manager you didn't like if you had the option vs. taking less money somewhere else in an area you liked, near your family and friends, etc. These guys are doing the same thing. I very much doubt that many of these free agents we thought we would just magically land, we're even considering us seriously.
Copp, and Compher are both fine for what they are. They are neither the reason we win or we lose as a team. They are a massive upgrade over Suter, Filppula, Stephens, whatever rando that would would've gotten for 1.5M for 1yr. They are asked to literally slot in almost every possible position in the lineup from 1st to 4th, Center, Wing, PK. They do so without complaint, and play hard. There are a number of guys on this team who I can say I've seen take a night off, especially when things were bad, these guys generally all give us effort and try hard. I don't know how many guys are cool with eating the minutes they do, not getting the PP time, play wet nurse to prospects and help them along, and do so without a negative in the press. I think they are good guys, knew what they signed up for, and are doing their job. And when its all said a done, when our window is open and the whole wave of our prospects are here and ready. They will be gone and literally not a single bit of their contract or their play would have a single negative impact on our future success.
EDIT: For clairty...
