Yeah, it does not sound reasonable.

Only thing about this Stamkos-rumour, which came on my mind, was using money somehow more over the cap.

Like that deferred money thing. Paying 4 year money in three years, which was kind of possible, and GM has to ask from the owner, if we use more money than the cap allows.

"How to figure out the 4th year" in Stamkos-case could have been something like that.

Based on what limited knowledge I have on Chris Illitch, if he were to be "cheap" I think it would have been something like telling Yzerman he can only spend $75M for the next x amount of years, not to be involved in how Yzerman spends the money. To be as involved as telling Yzerman who he can and can't offer something like 3 vs 4 years to doesn't track. And as has been stated numerous times, this team was pretty much capped out to start the season.
