Yzerman End of Season pressconference

And when you pay for mediocre players, it should not be all that surprising to get mediocre results.

So I expect more from Larkin and Raymond and Seider and Edvinsson and Kasper this year? Yes. But (at the moment) the roster still has a lot of dead weight that isn't going to suddenly get significantly better.
Perhaps you can explain why Larkin was so content at the end of last season, but was so upset this time around? We added a 2C in Kasper and a 3D in Edvinsson. Talbot provided entirely mediocre goaltending.

Why was Dylan so sad?

Confirmation bias, they seem to be indicting most of the team. I do think they wanted to put pressure on the guys that called themselves core guys in their pressers, with Larkin being the biggest one.

You want it to be just this, truth is most of us will never know. What is clear is everyone has expectations for the first time in near a decade in this organization.

Both things can be true, and saying confirmation bias is abit meh.

I could just as easily say that your interpretation is confirmation bias aswell. Wouldn't be very productive, right? Effectively shooting down your line of reasoning without addressing it.

Isn't this what the press conference was about really? Shooting down Larkins comments and gaslighting the team that they're good enough but not?

Larkin: ( I need/ We need some help )
Yzerman/Organization: ( Be Better. )
Larkin: ( I can't play any better )
Yzerman: ( This is the way )

Oh look. Continuing to focus on only one topic. How surprising.

Larkin needs to be better, both as a player and as a leader. Acknowledged, accepted, and locked in.

IN ADDITION TO THAT, there are several issues with this roster that have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with Dylan Larkin.

If they magically traded Larkin tomorrow for a package of Gordie Howe, Mark Messier, and Steve Yzerman all in their respective primes - and The Detroit Red Wings now had the greatest perceived leadership in the league - that still doesn't somehow transform other crappy players into great ones.

The good players can and must improve.
Nearly half the roster isn't made up of good players.

I will say though, the comment about the blues not improving their team at the deadline and still making it is a bit BS.

Blues did pretty much exactly what the Wings needed. They were proactive and fired their coach early in the season, they also acquired Cam Fowler and I don't think they make it without him.

Kind of disingenuous.

ugly . wish this woulda been kept in the room

the only reason i can see for yzerman choosing this attitude , along with mcclellan taking his turn behind the wheel of the bus , is to justify to fans an approaching larkin trade

and maybe larks wants out , and thats why he made the original comments

bottom line is i dont agree with yzerman or larkin making these thoughts public

Kind of, and i think it's weak sauce.

Not impressed with Yzermans comments in this presser. He opens up with taking accountability, and then next sentence rambles on about how he there was nothing he could have done to improve the team.

Indeed, don’t really have a problem with that. This is an opinion site. I still don’t think he is being traded and have no problem with what anybody said. I think every side is speaking to this being disappointing. Now go fix it, that is all of your jobs to do.

Not when you're talking specifically about the deadline, as Larkin and now Yzerman have.

St. Louis was ready to move Brayden Schenn, ironically their own captain, in a deadline sell-off and never really considered adding anything much at the deadline.

They also fired their coach a whole 30 days before the wings fired theirs. Earlier yes, but not much.

The Blues also had a goalie stand on his head after the 4 Nations, while Larkin and Raymond pretty much disappeared.

Really hard to find any sense in the sticking up for what Larkin has said. He does nothing ... but wants his GM to spend valuable resources on a rental ... who's going to make Larkin play better somehow? That is a real reach.

If you hate Yzerman, nothing he'll say will make you change your mind. But the Illich's would rather sacrifice a family member than fire Steve Yzerman. They will never fire him. And, he doesn't deserve to lose his job. He's pretty much done everything he said he would and never really strayed from it, unless it was getting him a top player (DeBrincat)

I'm not sticking up for Larkin, I've criticised him in this thread aswell.

I'm seriously concerned by Larkins leadership and Yzermans ability to make the necessary moves to push this team into the playoffs.

Cam Fowler and the coaching change weren't the only things that contributed to them making PO. But, I'd definitely say they pushed the team over the hump.

If Larkin can't play any better then he should go, he was atrocious to end the year

Fair enough

So... Larkin says some shit at the end of the year and kind of forces Yzerman to respond. Yzerman says morale is the responsibility of the leaders and they weren't good enough. I mean, he's for sure addressing Larkin, but also spreading the blame a little.

Here's what I would do. If Larkin won't put together a list of teams he'd accept a trade to, I'd strip him of the C, give it to Mo, give Raymond a permanent A, and look them directly in the eyes and say "this team doesn't accept poor efforts or poor excuses anymore" and then continue staring in the eyes until someone blinks.

Sure. And then Seider or Raymond, after busting their asses this year, should stare down Yzerman and say, "Get off your Lazyboy and upgrade some of the dead weight you signed in free agency over the last few years."

It's a two way street.

I mean... DeBrincat gets the C then and Raymond and Mo can go play for a team that tolerates that sort of bullshit.

Without reading the 9 pages (yet), here are my thoughts on the notes I took while watching:

1) Overall - great "look". Steve and Todd are clearly on the same page. Very smooth interplay - love to see that in a presentation.

2) Early on Steve listed some important rookies. Among them, Berggren. So IMO he's not going anywhere unless a good deal is forthcoming.

3) The whole "St. Louis and Montreal are no better than us and THEY got in" is a nicely-constructed, honest slam on the chief weakness of this current team. "The Boss isn't saying you're unskilled, he's saying you're weak." THAT should be a HUGE motivator for real men.

4) T-Mac, approximately 21:00, regarding trade deadline help:
... so it's not about who wasn't here, in my opinion, it's about who was here...

BOOM.

5) The Walman question: "No." Love it.

6) Regarding the coaching change - I was surprised that no one draws a comparison to a goalie change in-game. I know the scales are different, but sometimes you pull a goalie to tell the team "you're effing it up for this guy" to settle them down. Woulda been nice to hear that about/for LaLonde.

7) T-mac: "don't need a ra-ra guy" - was that a Walman shot?

8) T-mac: "... a lot of leaders when it's going good..." the quote that served me very well during my career was from Eisenhower in WW2: "Success is always 'we'. Failure is always 'I'."

Overall I thought it was a great press conference.

LGRW!!!!!!

I want to have higher hopes for the team after the presser, but hearing the GM and HC give very positive comments about Holl and Gus was disappointing.

We can call out Larkin for once popping off frustration to the media? Ok, fine with that, but at the same time can the Wings brass STOP protecting the vet plug trash on the roster! Both players need to go, and now I have a bad feeling both will be back. 🤮

Whether he does a good job or not, I just like the fact that Yzerman is the GM. I don't think he's done a great job, but I still think it's pretty cool that he's the GM, so many superstars just disappear after they retire and you barely see or hear from them. Perhaps a lame thing to be happy about, but after all these years to see him still involved with and talking about the team gives me some joy.

Between Todd having a glowing review of Holl and Steve saying they were satisfied with Gustafsson and thinks the team missed him when he was hurt... I don't have much hope for next year.

They either don't understand or wont admit that the defense on this team is trash outside Seider and Edvinsson.

I’m praying that this was Todd doing Steve a solid by giving him a positive soundbite about a guy who needs his trade value boosted. If not, WTF - is there anyone in this organization who can properly evaluate a depth NHLer?

Sounds like a bad corporate manager.

For sure. Maybe there wasn't much available at the deadline, but he should have signed better UFAs over the summer. Gus, Tank, Motte, and Watson were the additions last summer. Bunch of garbage. Roy's from Canton, I bet he would have taken the same offer from the Wings.

If Stevie won't own up to signing garbage, I'm ready for a new GM.

And Montreal knew they were adding essentially the best NHL-ready forward prospect.

YOU WILL HAVE MOTTE AND LIKE IT.

Quit honestly, if the roster was as good as the other teams, this team would have been a lot closer to the playoffs. There's a lot of garbage on this team.

Next thing you know, Stevie's gonna tell them to "work smarter, not harder". To me, that's the dumbest line to come out of corporate management. I always reply that I like to work stupid.
