Yzerman End of Season pressconference

8 years of playoff runs and can only reliably get past the first round when they get a matchup against a team that just finished a rebuild is nothing. Call me when they finally beat Fla or TB to go to the conference finals.
I think this is the best playoff version I have seen. They aren’t relying on Morgan Reilly to close games as often.

Go listen to Larkin's locker clean out presser from last year. Was totally happy with getting close to the playoffs, no concerns at all about Newsy. No concerns at all about the direction of the franchise despite losing 15 of 20 games.

What's changed? Newsy's gone and Larkin is being pushed by McLellan to lead.

yeah, this still wasn't the barn burner people were making it out to be, and I still don't get the impression Yzerman is actively looking to move Larkin over a 9 minute presser.

9 years without playoffs l, but the prices… both groups need more of it, I appreciate him kicking it off. Larkin better have his best season next year.

They pissed it away because the group isn’t good enough.

That's part of it. 5 of the top 6 and 2 of the team's defensemen are talented enough to push the team to above .500.

The depth was replacement level on a good day. Losing Andrew f***ing Copp tanked the team. He's a 4th line shutdown guy on any of the wildcard teams in the playoffs now.

We talked about what this team needs to truly take off; a top 6 LW, a top 4 D, a 3rd line RW, and this team probably improves 12+ standings points.

Leadership on the team needs to be looked at though. I hated losing Perron even if he's old and slow. The guy was a real leader in the room. I hated that Fabbri also left even if he's always injured because he was another guy that was super outspoken and well respected in the room.

Larkin needs to have the best season of his life if he's still a Red Wing after the draft. And Yzerman needs to get off his ass and get better pro scouts.

Yzerman's opening comments were 100% directed at Larkin without using his name. McLellan's comments on the team being soft were 100% directed at Larkin without using his name.

So if you were expecting him to use Dylan Larkin's name I guess I can see your point, but it was pretty clear who most of these criticisms were directed at. His comment on morale was pretty clearly directed at Larkin and his pity party press conference.

Why does Stamkos keep coming up? We're lucky we dodged that bullet or we'd be stuck with another FA contract that would be setting back this endless rebuild for years.

yeah, I know who they were directed at and? I think people want Yzerman and Mclellan's reactions to be hot and are reading into it as they feel they want it. They've really been talking about wanting leadership in the room to step up and be more accountable since McLellan came here.. It's all a variation of the same thing that's been said for months now. The guys in the room need to take responsibility and step up.

You cant watch that 1st 15mins and not come away thinking Larkin is gone this summer..

That plus an upgrade in nets, more scoring depth and more leadership overall..

Larkin and Mrazek for McTavish and Gibson as the basis

Agreed. Not looking to start any pissing matches with anyone, but IMO I don't know how you can watch that and not conlcude that Yzerman was/is extremely pissed off at and disaappointed in DL. This was way out of character for Yzerman in a public setting.

Where this ends up I guess is ultimately dependant on how DL takes the message. Suck it up, point taken and get back to work or, time for a change.

Time will tell.

Confirmation bias, they seem to be indicting most of the team. I do think they wanted to put pressure on the guys that called themselves core guys in their pressers, with Larkin being the biggest one.

You want it to be just this, truth is most of us will never know. What is clear is everyone has expectations for the first time in near a decade in this organization.

Are you ever going to answer how many of those games he actually played in? Or are you too busy pushing an agenda?

Maybe he was happy because of being on the doorstep to the playoffs and reasonably thought there would more improvement next season?

Seriously dude, this is boomer on Facebook level delusion.

People use it thinking Illitch is hindering Yzerman making moves or signings by being a cheap skate.

Even though we paid Larkin, Seider, Debrincat and Raymond. Not to mention a ton of UFA signings.

I'd disagree there was for sure shade thrown towards the players specifically Larkin. They basically said the team is weak and mentally weak with no leaders.

Yzerbot. Gotta let him go.

Gonna have to let Yzerman go when he trades Larkin, and they suck for 3 years after. ( lol jk )

I heard them say several times Seider/Raymond have room to grow as leaders and leadership needs to improve across the board.

But focus on whatever you want to focus on, I guess.

I think Larkins gone this summer. He can almost determine where he'd like a trade and idk why he'd want to stick around town at this point anymore.

And we're also up against the cap. People are just trying to use Illitch as a scape goat.

I mean, I've said it since mid season. For the first time, Toronto has been quietly good. No big Matthews goal scoring story, no in fighting. They've added great depth pieces and it seems like they have their bona fide starter. I can see them getting to at least the conference final.

Hah, it seemed so impossible for people that Yzerman would have any problem with Larkin's comments.

Oh, and it's still laughable that Larkin should be stripped of the C because of lack of leadership?

Yzerman traded a first round pick to get Alex DeBrincat. He's not signing rentals, he said he'd make a deal for someone who can help the team long term.

He also mentioned the fact the cap is going up which may impact the UFA market.
All true. But all of this has nothing to do with my original question of why people keep bringing up that we couldn't sign Stamkos because of Illitch.

Reading between the lines, my guess is he would have been open to bring Gost back but wasn't willing to commit to 3 years and that dollar amount.
And when you pay for mediocre players, it should not be all that surprising to get mediocre results.

Do I expect more from Larkin and Raymond and Seider and Edvinsson and Kasper this year? Yes. But (at the moment) the roster still has a lot of dead weight that isn't going to suddenly get significantly better.
