Have you ever bothered to check all the verses of Star spangled banner. That also fits USA these days, it's all about killing the enemy etc. The part that you always hear are the nice verses...

Considering the Star Spangled Banner was a poem written by Sir Frances Scott Key during the war of 1812, during the Brittish attack of Fort McHenry on September 13, 1814 Key was detained by the british forces and wrote that poem having watched the battle ensue, some of the language used shouldn't be surprising.
