Proposal: Your Team's Young Defenseman of the 'We want to put this player on waivers but we know that if we do, we'll lose him on waivers for nothing' type.

Yup. The only reason he is around is as a RD filler/depth once Savard is rented out.

I expect Mailloux gets his spot and his role after the next traiming camp.

With Hutson showing he's a #1 PP dman, Barron's future with the Habs seems tenuous at best.

Yeah. This was a clear "make or break" season for Barron, and he's done basically nothing with it. Really just running out the clock on his time with the Habs now.

Still can't help but wonder if there isn't something salvageable there, but it's probably just a tease. He'll get at least another good long "change of scenery" look with another team though. The tools are just too enticing. One of those players who just seems like they should be better than they actually are.

That player for us is Vaakanainen, not LaCombe.

Yep I was gonna say the same, Vaak isn't all that young anymore (25 almost 26) but he's the closest we have to what OP describes. Might be a decently steady, if fairly unnoticeable minute muncher, the Ducks just have so many other young D prioritized ahead of him. The Ducks have enough depth to move Vaak if a team can offer him a bit more opportunity. The Ducks have seven other capable NHL D when Fowler returns, and likely want to give any minutes that open up to guys like Luneau or Hinds

People went hard on Washington for losing Forsberg for years. We've got a long road ahead of us with this one.
I’m hoping Nashville wins the first overall pick.

Perhaps that might help the sting or even get rid of it all
