Proposal: Your Team's Young Defenseman of the 'We want to put this player on waivers but we know that if we do, we'll lose him on waivers for nothing' type.

As the title says, I'm looking for the younger defensemen who can't crack their NHL rosters who the GM might be willing to trade for cheap. The defenseman version of the Tomasino trade, basically.

I tried this a couple of weeks ago with Jackson LaCombe from the Ducks, but it turned out that LaCombe isn't viewed as negatively as my cursory research had led me to believe. So I figured I'd ask directly about which defensemen aren't viewed highly by their own team's management.

I am offering Chicago's 2025 5th Round pick. If that's not in the ballpark of what you'd want for the player, then it's not really the type of trade I'm looking for.

If (and it's a big if) the Caps get some guys back from injury and there's a roster crunch than Alexander Alexeyev is your man. Has always played completely fine when called upon but also is pretty clearly the team's 7th or 8th defenseman. Maybe not the youngest but still only 25.

Without the roster crunch though I don't think a 5th is enough as the Caps love carrying 8d whenever possible.

Speaking as a Jackets fan, we pretty much gave all of ours away last summer when Waddell first came in. The closest equivalent we have left is Harris, and that's more fans here giving up on him than management.

Speaking as a Preds fan... :biglaugh:

A guy who I think is waiver eligible next year is Ryan Johnson. No Effin clue why he’s not in the NHL right now. He’s exactly the mold of your modern NHL defender. I think when another team gives him the chance buffalo hasn’t, he’s going to flourish.

We already moved Ronnie Attard, so I can’t offer him, but it feels like Adam Ginning’s been passed on the Flyers’ depth chart by Helge Grans (and he was always behind everyone currently on the Flyers), so he might be available on our end.

Flames have a ton of them. Solovyov, Kuznetsov, and Gruishnikov.

I'd have been happy with any of them as a #6 but Pachal has been fantastic so they never got a chance. Also we signed Barrie for some reason

Do you want Barrie haha

Jamie Drysdale for the Flyers, once he returns from yet another injury. The D has been a lot better since Emil Andrae replaced him.

That player for us is Vaakanainen, not LaCombe.

Drysdale isn't really a "we'll take a 5th and be done with it" kind of player, though. He's been bootycheeks since we acquired him, but there's no circumstance where they just take anything and walk away, that's just our own frustration talking.

Justin Barron for the Habs

Such a frustrating player. Seems to have all the tools, and isn't a complete lunkhead, but can't ever seem to really figure it out.

He still seems like a good "buy low" change of scenery candidate though.

Jacob Moverare has been this guy for the Kings for several years

Moverare does seem like the epitome of this sort of player. Right on the cusp, but not quite good enough. Seems to be basically stuck there. His skating has gotten better, but it feels like that's always going to limit him to being a journeyman "on the cusp" player. Always found his name kind of ironic. Moverare "rarely moves". Just not dynamic enough.

He's also an example of the way this type of player typically can clear waivers though. Even if fans/the team are afraid of a claim.

Not my team, but Kolyachonok fits the bill. Scratched alot lately but would get claimed off waivers.

I'm not sure Kolyachonok would get claimed tbh. Especially with his contract sort of designed to discourage that. He's definitely one of those "on the cusp" defencemen though. Good enough to play some NHL minutes, but not dynamic enough to stand out and separate himself from other options for those minutes. He certainly doesn't have those sort of skating limitations like Moverare though. He's one who feels like he might still have some "upside" left to unlock.

Yup. The only reason he is around is as a RD filler/depth once Savard is rented out.

I expect Mailloux gets his spot and his role after the next traiming camp.

With Hutson showing he's a #1 PP dman, Barron's future with the Habs seems tenuous at best.

So you're looking for a Jonas Siegenthaler type deal when NJD got him from wash for a 3rd?

Something like that would be perfect, yes. Or a Jonathan Kovacevic deal, when NJD got him from MTL for a 4th.
Though preferably ~3-4 years younger than Kovacevic. I didn't realize he was 27 already.

So more of an older guy?

Kovy was 27 and just has so far made the absolute most of his opportunity with Pesce and Luke hurt to start the year.

Siegs was 23 and just wasn't able to grab the job from older dmen yet on a contender in WSH. More of a still in development guy.

No, I meant more like Siegs. I didn't realize how old Kovacevic was.

So... more of a situation like Kovasevic getting waived, and not him being traded 2 years later ?
Yes, if that's how the Canadiens got the younger Kovacevic in the first place, sure. But in this case, the Jets would have realized he'd be claimed, so they'd want to trade him for something.
