Your team's best all 2000's roster

Marchand - Bergeron - Pastrnak

Samsonov - Allison - Guerin

Lucic - Krejci - Kessel

Savard - J.Thornton - Murray

Ex. Seguin, Horton

Bourque - Chara

Gonchar - McAvoy

Krug - Seidenberg

Ex. Carlo

Early 2000s really dont do any favors to habs

Erik Cole - Nick Suzuki - Cole Caufield
Max Pacioretty - Tomas Plekanec - Alexei Kovalev
Mike Cammalleri - Saku Koivu - Alexander Radulov
Tomas Tatar - Philip Danault - Brendan Gallagher

Andrei Markov - PK Subban
Lane Hutson - Shea Weber
Roman Hamrlik - Jeff Petry
Mike Komisarek

Carey Price
Jose Theodore

Notes:

- Although he was there only 1 year I think Erik Cole is the best season by a LW we’ve had in that period.
- I used to think Radulov was the best forward habs have had in that period until Suzuki surpassed him recently. He was a hab for 1 year too.
- As a hab Kovalev is basically a 1 year wonder.
- 2002 Theodore is the single greatest performance of that group.
- I considered Slaf but I dont think he’s there yet.

Add: James wisniewski
Delete Mike komisarek

Wisniewski's time was short but he was very important as he was filling in for the injured Andrei markov. It was probably his best season and it got him a big contract with Columbus in the summer.

Sheldon souray also had a 26 goal season, but its difficult to tell where he should go. Defense definitely has tougher decisions on this roster.... maybe he should be the 7 instead of wisniewski.... or maybe he takes hamrlik's spot.

Think you have to have Lindros (depending on how you demark 2000s...), Forsberg and Desjardins in there. Kim Johnsson too. And I think Mason was better than Biron overall. Probably knock Hartnell out of the team too for Roenick, who played some wing for Flyers.

Lindros played 22 games for the Flyers in the 2000s and was still one of the best players on earth.
Forsberg was still a Hart contender level guy in time as a Flyer on a game-by-game basis.
Desjardins was still elite in early 2000s... heck... he had 2x top 15 Norris finishes, playing 26-27 mins a night.
Johnsson was an all-around top pairing guy. 24 minutes a night and 40 points in low scoring era. Better than Streit for sure, Coburn too, and probably Provorov at his best.

Think to accommodate I would have:

Giroux-Lindros-Voracek
Gagne-Forsberg-Recchi
Briere-Richards-Carter
Roenick-Couturier-Konecny

Pronger-Desjardins
Timonen-Johnsson
Provorov-Gostisbehere

Cechmanek
Mason

This but I would replace Provorov with Sanheim.

We really could have had a hell of a team post lock out if we weren't forced to sell.
I forgot how good Rinne was. Not a lot of guys in the last 25 years would be placed ahead of Saros. You guys have had such stable goaltending for so long.

Looking for Leaf fans for suggestions on anyone I missed on mine?

Key omissions:
-ROR, as he was a mercenary. Still within the confines of the game, but not necessarily the spirit thereof.

-B. McCabe. It was a toss up between him and Kubina. I was just such a fan of the latter

My bubble forward was Corson as he was past his prime by the time he was on the Leafs. He was such a warrior for us though, which is why he got the nod over some Kessel era wingers. Komorov with Kadri and Tucker would be fun to see though.

Heatley - Spezza - Alfredsson
Tkachuk - Yashin - Hossa
Havlat - Stutzle - Stone
Giroux - Fisher - Batherson
EX: Kelly - Pageau - Neil

Chara - Karlsson
Sanderson - Redden
Chabot - Methot
EX: Phillips - Volchenkov

Hasek
Anderson
EX: Emery

All the Extras are "role players" that I couldn't help but include.

Pretty nasty from bottom to top, if you ask me. Hasek and Anderson both provided Vezina-level goaltending, Chara and Karlsson were both arguably the best D in the world for significant periods, Redden was briefly a top Norris candidate and Chabot and Sanderson both established themselves as legitimate #1Ds quite early in their 20s. There are 5 #1Ds in this group.

And then, at forward, you have a whole host of guys who were never quite the best at their position, but not too far off in Yashin (probably the #1 forward on this team, in reality), Alfredsson, Heatley, Stone, Tkachuk, Hossa, and Spezza. Outside of Fisher, every player is pretty comfortably a 1st liner.

I disagree on the bolded (unless you’re building a team based on designated roles, like building a 4th line based on 4th line esque players). I think you can do better than these players, such as Horvat, Demitra, Mogilny, etc.

I was building it for specific lines and roles to play as an 82 game schedule/playoffs. Might be too focused on the bottom on the lineup but I wanted to get guys who were responsible and could bring an edge down the lineup, as the top 6 isn’t that big outside of Bertuzzi. I also don’t think a lot of guys would be happy about lower roles or sitting out. A more Olympic style tournament might be different.

That said, I’d still take Morrison and Garland over Horvat and Vancouver’s version of Demitra. I was never the biggest fan of Horvat. He had periods where he’d have nice rushes with the puck and he was great in the bumper, but he was inconsistent at cycling he puck, didn’t use his size effectively and wasn’t great at making his linemates better. He might be better at running a helicopter line, but I think Morrison is better at playing with better players, and gives the option to put him back with Bertuzzi and Naslund. Horvat’s PP bumper spot is also not that valuable here as there’s so many good PP options already. Morrison and Garland are better 5v5 producers, which is where they’d slot in here. Garland’s also a better forechecker. Horvat’s great at face offs, but the team already has Miller and Kesler to take most of the key offensive draws, or Malhotra and Kesler to take most of the key defensive ones.

Mogilny is a tough one as he was obviously still super talented, as he showed in Jersey, but he wasn’t playing great in his short time in the 2000s with the Canucks, and didn’t seem happy. I don’t want him on the team if he’s only going half speed.

Frankly I really didn’t consider Demitra at all. He had a nice run with Sundin and Kesler for half a year but really wasn’t more than a decent 2nd liner with the team, but he was soft and didn’t really bring anything else to the table. I’m not looking at it as getting St.Louis’ Demitra. The team already has 4 forwards at Art Ross-level, plus 2 guys who were top 10 in points. They’re going to get the bulk of the offensive starts and PP time. I like having the physical, fast, forechecking ability of Cooke and Hansen lower in the lineup, and then Joshua and Sherwood as options for replacement. I think it’s important to try to create a team that’s hard to play against.

I like Joshua in particular because he could always mesh with Garland again, and he can actually add some fighting ability if needed. Sherwood is the one who I’d be more likely to replace, possibly with a guy who could more easily slot higher in the lineup (Horvat, Boeser, etc), but I do like how physical he is with a pretty decent scoring touch on top.

Tanguay - Sakic - Iginla
Kadri - Mackinnon - Rantanen
Duchene - Forsberg - Hejduk
Nichushkin - O'Reilly - Drury

Makar - Foote
Blake - Bourque
E. Johnson - Toews

Kariya and Selanne have no business being included, buy they'd really make this roster look bonkers.
The Avs need to have their captain of the late teens Landeskog on this team if only for leadership and team construction.

Slide Kadri off that second line and put Gabriel there.

Duchene is the odd man out or extra forward.

I also wonder if the Avs are having second thoughts about not keeping Kadri as he seems to be aging quite well with the Flames.

I don't think Celebrini makes this team yet. Ditto for Askarov. In fact, you forgot Hertl. Jones or Niemi as the backup.

For shame, I forgot one of my favs! Hertl in for Michalek. Niemi is the right pick, but I thought it was cool to have Nabby mentor the guy he's currently mentoring.

I think the rule in these rosters is that you need to forget a guy.
Yeah, Landeskog over Duchene, obviously.
