Your Rebuild Opinion? Next Move Coming?

Yeah, the question with Kreider is whether he's just following the natural aging process and is on the inevitable downward slide, or whether that's just the overall stink from the Rangers last season?

My Plan A would be to gauge whether Kyle Connor is going to renew in Winnipeg...
Very legit question re: Kreider. It didn't seem like much of anyone on that Rangers team was interested in playing hockey last year. I've been in the "nope, he's washed" tribe but this gives me pause. He could be an interesting option and we desperately need a banger up front.

Re: Connor, I'm reading Winnipeg is making it top priority to get him signed to the point they may need to let Ehlers go. Winnipeg has done well to keep Schiefle and Helly in the fold so that puts us in wait and hope he wants to come home mode.

Yeah, realistically I think the only path to Kyle Connor playing for the Wings would be if Yzerman made Winnipeg an absolutely insane offer this summer, early enough that the Jets would still have time to sign another forward in free agency. Otherwise, he will either extend in Winnipeg or go to a contender at the deadline for a king's ransom.

Not holding my breath.

I hear what you're saying but I don't think that Connor WPG is a forgone conclusion. This is a team that took DAL to 6 despite having some tough injuries, and they have 22M in cap and their championship window is open right now. Tough to imagine they are going to take it easy this offseason, not sure if they can afford to. I think they spend, and spend hard. They are a md-market Canadian team and will have to pay for players and all it takes is Connor to decide to 'focus on the season' and then 'testing the market' to make a play on him.

I don't think that this offseason has any real bearing on him next year. Asusming they get Vilardi and Ehlers locked in at 17M in total - and round out the rest of the roster with the remaining 6M or so with dudes. Including Connors 7M, they have another...15M or so coming off the books to offer him up at 12M+.?

Seider, Raymond, DeBrincat and Larkin would all need to go.

Then it’s 6 to 10 years before this team is worth a damn.
Depends on your definition of ‘worth’ I guess. If you think peak Seider, Raymond, DeBrincat, and Larkin only get you a few conference finals, it might be worth going for McKenna assuming he turns into a superstar and you land other elite players.

At this point, Yzerman is too far along in the rebuild. His prospects will take them as far as they can. I’m just not sure it’s enough for a cup let alone multiple.

Hard no on Krieder. Too old. No more aging and middling vets.

Obviously fans want to win it all. But what you listed is already enough success to be in the top 5-10 percent of NHL rebuilding.

If there wasn't a lottery, sure. But I have better odds of getting struck by lightning than Detroit does of actually winning the lottery.

I don't disagree. I'm still hoping there will be a trade or two over the next few years that raises this thing to another level.

I agree with you, and I don't think this core's peak is that far off. This isn't the old school NHL, the league is getting younger and younger. Unfortunately this core is miles away from contending. A few conference finals would be a miracle. Toronto/TBL/FLA have a stranglehold on the division. MTL has passed us in the rebuild, I'm not sold on Ottawa but they're pretty similar to Detroit.

Maybe this team can eke out a playoff appearance in the next few years in a season where everything goes perfect, but this team is nowhere near being contenders.

Toronto is nothing special after this summer. They will lose an elite player, and rest of the elite guys are still overpaid. Pressure goes higher and same problems are still there.

Tampa is getting old.

Florida is a Dynasty and will be The Team to Beat for many seasons.

We’ve said this about Tampa how many times? Yet every year they make it and we don’t

Ya I don’t really see it with Tampa this year
Yeah, you look at their top 10 players, maybe even 15, signed already and you're like, oh, ok well not this next year without injuries.

Maybe in a few years, the core is all nearing 30+ and a few guys like Hedman/McDonagh are really on their way out being closer to 40.

Are we calling for Yzerman's head if it's let's say July 8th, no big name trades or FA signings and essentially running it back with the Yzerplugs?

I will be, enough is enough time to get aggressive we’ve hoarded enough picks and prospects and he’s had plenty of time to accomplish a rebuild. If he doesn’t do it he should be let go and someone better can steer the ship

it’s a solid core and I would say 10-15% personally. As for the lottery, winning it is hard sure. But I think winning the cup without a top 3 pick is even longer odds and that’s where Detroit is at.
