Danielson, while having a decent shot, is much more of a standard playmaking center. If you want to see him put up numbers he'll need to be with finishers. I am fine with trying him as our 3rd line center as long as we actually play him with some offensive guys. I don't want him in a purely shutdown role, because he is comfortable there and I want to see him pushed offensively. I always felt this somewhat held Flip back in that Babs really utilized him in a D role and his offensive game lagged at the NHL level. Totally game to add Danielson to our PK unit as we obviously struggled there last year.
I am also fine starting him in GR as long as we also have guys like MBN, Ammo, Buch, Finnie, Koskinen down there or legit offensive AHL players. (I feel like we need an AHL vet overhaul in GR). I think him being the #1 center and go to guy offensively would not be a bad thing for him.
If he comes to camp and plays like he did 2 camps ago, I'd like to see him on the team, but if other young guys outplay him at camp then I'm ok with him being in GR.
We just need ideally at least 2 rookie forwards on this team. Likely Mazur plus one of Danielson, MBN, Buch, or Ammo. I just don't want to see guys that are legitimately NHL ready stuck learning bad habits in GR because we once again signed too many vets. You aren't going to have 5 rookie forwards at once so you need to plan to spread that out a bit over the next two seasons. Mazur, Danielson, MBN, Buch, and Ammo are really at most 1 season away.
