I just hope Tuch and Kapanen picks up their game, would be hard to loose 2 2nd round pick because they didn’t develop

He's still an undersized overager so I'm pretty cautious on those guys even with RHP who had the same profile and has at least made it visible that he could play NHL games on the 4th line going forward.

He has a chance to steadily climb depending on how transitions to the pro ranks.

Ugly skater......has alot of work to do in that area if he expects to play in the NHL at 5'7"

Weaknesses in the prospect pool:
Center prospects (both offensive and two-way)
Goal scoring wingers
Puck possession wingers
Complimentary wingers with size/meanness
Offensive defenseman
Another goalie prospect.
Right handed defenseman.
Now do our strengths

I think Struble is getting overtaken by others who are progressing faster than him. Next year is crucial for him.

You don’t have more love for Simoneau? He might’ve won the scoring title if he’d stayed healthy.

I love Simoneau (took him in 2 different mocks), but guys like him have to take the long way to the NHL, and most of them don't make it.

Remember when so many had Norlinder ranked ahead of Harris last year? There are going to be more movement to come with others like this. The good news? For every 3 that fall, 1 rises. We have probability working in our favor due to quantity. That's what draft power does.

Said this before and will say it again...
* Tampa drafted Namestnikov ahead of Kucherov.
* Tampa drafted Keokkeok ahead of Vasilevskiy
* Tampa drafted Masin, Macleod ahead of Point.
* Tampa drafted Stepphens, Spencer, Yan ahead of Cirelli

Yeah, they had Stamkos and Hedman and traded Drouin for Sergachev but they also drafted Drouin ahead of Jones.

Draft power over a span of years is the secrete. Nobody is that good at drafting. Accumulate as many darts as you can and that's what the Habs have done in recent drafts as well as the drafts to come. We are going to give ourselves the best shot to hit with our many darts and maybe guys like Roy, Farrell, Kidney, Harris, Mailloux, Dobes become our 2nd round + hits. Combine that with adding Barron and Heineman in trades.
There are limits to how good your drafting can be. Is there legitimately a way to tell a player is going to break out at 21 when they are 18? There is a lot you can do to prepare for the draft but even with great preparation there is a lot of randomness.

Max out scouting and development, but still keep throwing lots of darts. MB's "trade down for more picks" doesn't make sense for high picks but it's not a bad idea in the late rounds. Lots of guys end up unsigned with this strategy but you should have a good idea of their potential by the time they go unsigned and you get to take a few more shots.

Some of this goes with the potential vs chances to achieve the potential in the NHL. As a small forward Kucherov may have been a 9C, or something, mostly viewed as a 7D and picked late, same with Gaudreau. Pretty much anyone with size is bumped up, McCarron or Tinordi go to 9E or whatever because if they fix their flaws they could be monsters. Small players get passed over because they top out as good scorers not as good scorers who can physically dominate opponents.

There is great value in getting a good big guy, and the habs drafted a bunch of big projects with this in mind but without the development infrastructure to finish the projects. It's easier to find value drafting average or smaller guys who get passed over, guys like Caufield. The habs will have to do some of both.

First step is to fix the development system and Hughes is visibly working on it. You probably want a mix of hockey nerds talking about skating stride and shot quality with math nerds comparing stats and leagues to make the decisions. You definitely don't want the GM watching RDS/TVA/TSN and taking notes.

Maybe but I think its fair if someone doesn't want to rank him until he's actually signed to an ELC.. Furthermore, I'm fine with people leaving him lower than other prospects who have impressed and have more track record.

Mailloux's suspension and then litany of injuries hasn't left us with enough understanding of really what he is other than he's raw and toolsy.

Slaflovsky and Guhle (along with Suzuki and Caufield) are such important players that NEED to hit their ceiling otherwise we're in deep shit for a long time.

They are the only two players I have hope can become top players on the team. I'm not yet sold on Barron, Roy, Farrell, Kidney and Mailloux.

Luckily there's also next year's top 5 prospect we're more than likely going to get.

Oooo fun, this is my list based on progression/upside/opinion and completely ignoring risk/odds. Should be fun to look back at

Tier One (Top Line F/Top Pair D):
1. Sean Farrell

Had it not been for Harvard’s season getting cancelled bc of covid he’d have a roster spot next season. Has the pedigree and potential of an elite forward. US hockey knows this and with the Habs/US Hockey connections i’m sure the new management feels the same. He’s in a tier of his own for forwards here and no one is close.
2. Jordan Harris
He blew my low expectations out of the water in his few NHL games. His combination of skating/poise and zero puck movers aside from Wideman I feel he’ll be MSL’s pet and move up the lineup with ease. I think he’s a player that will benefit when surrounded with NHL talent. Analytic darling #3/4 is more likely but my gut can’t rule out top pair so he’s here.

Tier Two (Top 6F/Top 4D):
3. Justin Barron

Chad pickup. Confidence and poise oozing in the O-Zone and non existent in the D-Zone. I think he’s ready but I totally understand if he’s with Laval next year. PP2 quarterback.
4. Kaiden Guhle
I like what I see, intriguing stuff. I’d prefer he‘s on the big club next year surrounded with NHL talent. I don’t see Laval doing much for his offense.
5. Josh Roy
I don’t see it, i’m sorry. I think we have a product of the worst QMJHL i’ve seen in my lifetime, but I can’t ignore the progress and pedigree. Ranking him outside of this tier feels overly pessimistic.

Tier Three (Middle 6F/Bottom Pair D)
6. Jesse Ylonen

Can fix his flaws with speed. Safe bet to be regular bottom 6 forward with a positive impact.
7. Raphael Harvey Pinard
He’s worked his ass off to get to where he is and I see no reason he doesn’t get a full NHL season in his career, even if it’s not with us.
8. Riley Kidney
Long shot prospect but there’s no arguing the skill and progression. Too bad the Q stinks, we won’t know what we have here until it comes time for the AHL.

Tier Four (Depth NHLers)
9. Jan Mysak

The forgotten prospect who will quietly pump out a season or two as a 12th/13th forward and makes you go “wait he actually made it?”
10. Emil Heinemen
No read on this guy besides being a worse Ylonen. HuGo likes him so he’ll get a chunk of NHL games I would think.

Tier Five (a few NHL games/below replacement NHLers)
11. Logan Mailloux

Stupid pick, fun gamble. Loved the upside but there’s just zero chance this guys catches up on lost time. CHL/AHL adjustment is hard enough. Lost cause. Gets a game because he was a 1st round pick.
12. Mathias Norlinder
Can’t help but feel like he was Bergevin’d and wrecked by concussions. Might get a cup of coffee next year but good luck. You were my chosen one before Harris.

Tier Six (I like them but it’s pure hopium):
13. Xavier Simoneau

Pure hopium because I love small point farmers from the Q. Loved the pick. Let’s hope for a nice AHL season next year.
14. Luke Tuch
I think we see a regression to the mean here, he was drafted to be a fun 4th liner anyway. Long live the Tuch Mysak Prohecy.
15. Ty Smilanic
Bought the dip? Maybe Wisconsin can fix him.
16. Josh Brook
Not ready to write him off yet. My confidence in Laval is getting a bit stronger.

Tier Seven (AHLer)
17. Arber Xhekaj

Crystal ball says he does not make the pro jump smoothly and gets swapped for an AHLer in two seasons. I’ve had a ton of fun watching him though, cool story too.
18. Gianni Fairbrother
19. Joel Teasdale

Tier Eight (Pro player in some capacity/Not Signed)
21. Oliver Kapanen
22. Blake Biondi
23. Rhett Pitlick

Tier Nine (Who?)
20. Dimitri Kostenko

This guy was a third rounder? First time i’ve read his name since the draft. Is there something here?

Tier 10 (The Trevor Timmins Memorial Graveyard)
24. Jayden Struble

He’s better than this range but he was Timmins parting gift so he has to go here. DA GREEK FREAK.
25. Jack Smith
what the f***?
26. Arvid Henriksson
Pretty sure this guy was drafted when I was a freshman in high school. I can’t believe his name is still here lmao.
27. Kieran Ruchienski
I actually feel bad for him. The first ever pity pick in the hockey history. Unborn Habs fans will stumble across this on hockeydb in 20 years and laugh.
Clearly, you don't have a very high opinion of the Habs' prospects....
