Jarome “the chrome dome” Iginla.

He would’ve won one if wasn’t for some French Canadian Journalist leaving him off of his ballot in 2002. If he had one more 5th place vote, he would have won over Jose Theodore.

That led to a change in rules, now the PWHA publishes all voters ballots in Hart Trophy voting.

In my mind, Iggy has a Hart Trophy. And a Conn Smythe, but that’s another topic entirely.
And Theodore left off 5, but why adjust for that right?

This take is tired, stale, and incorrect.

That season made him the only player (now joined by Ovechkin and McDavid) to lead the NHL in goals and points in the 21st century.

Iginla won the Lester B. Pearson award, aka voted MVP by his peers. Theodore didn’t even finish top 3 LOL.

Fact is, Iginla played on a completely dog shit Flames team that missed the playoffs. He literally scored 25% of the Flames goals that season and was in on nearly half of them points wise.

But sure dude, tired stale and incorrect.

I'm still disappointed that Jagr lost it to Thornton.

Jagr also "lost" a few due to him playing against Hasek the GOAT of goalies.

Talk about being unlucky. Great career nevertheless.

Patrice Bergeron. The most cerebral player I’ve ever seen, but got some Hart voices in only 5 seasons.

If Barkov could play a full 82 game season I think it would be possible for him.

Tkachuk could possibly do it as well. But it would probably take him outdoing his best season.

If Karlsson played for an O6 franchise he would've at least been a finalist once. It's pretty crazy that he never finished top 3 despite dragging Ottawa to the playoffs multiple times (with the help of Craig Anderson).

Paul Coffey bagged 48 goals and 138 points as a defenceman after seasons of 126 and 121 points, which is pretty good going, but what can you do if Gretzky is your team mate and scores 200 every year.

Shrug, not sure why anyone would care about Hart. It's an opinion trophy given out by biased reporters. Its value is 0.

A couple dozen players since 1980 could be listed here. Hart is tough enough as is to win, but between roughly 1980-1995 everyone was competing against Gretzky and then Lemieux for the Hart. The two best offensive players ever IMO.

Then from 2006-present Crosby/Ovi/McDavid have dominated the Hart.

Plenty of incredible players in those time frames who didn't win a Hart because they were going up against the most elite offensive players in NHL history. Reading through this thread made me remember how many awesome players never won a Hart.

Ray Bourque lost the closest Hart vote in history to the Messiah in 1990.

IMO hes the 2nd best defensman of all time regardless, but he was a hair away from being only the third ever defensemen (at the time) and fourth in history to win the award.

The only two I can think of from the Flyers who absolutely, slam dunk would make sense are Bernie Parent (adjusting for “the Hart is for Most Valuable Forward”) and Claude Giroux.

Michkov certainly seems capable of winning one eventually, but time will tell; the Flyers are no strangers to disaster.

Jonathan Quick for the 2012 regular season. He should have won Vezina, Hart and Conn Smythe. People realized too late and he only won the award given last.

This is a hot take for sure. "Should have" is really pushing it given the seasons Malkin and Stamkos had.

Jesper Bratt is a sneaky pick for the Devils. Most likely won't happen because he's a winger and plays with top centers but this year I think he's been the Devils' best offensive creator.

Yzerman was the best player in the league for a while but had the unfortunate luck to be behind two of the best ever. Remove Gretz/Mario and Yzerman’s the best player in the league over a six year stretch.

I can't believe that the "Iginla was screwed out of the 2002 Hart trophy" myth keeps getting repeated, more than two decades later.

There were 62 voters that year. 1 of them excluded Iginla. 4 of them excluded Theodore. But somehow this is evidence that Iginla was the one who was wronged?

(Two years later, Iginla finished runner-up for the Hart trophy while only finished T-16th in scoring. It's extremely rare for a forward to be a Hart finalist, while ranking that low in the scoring race. In fact, I can only find two other examples over the past 55 years. That hardly seems consistent with the notion that the voters were out to get him).
