Game 50 and they're working on communication.... 🤔

I’m bullish on Holtz as long term replacement for Toffoli. Not interested in trading him in a deal for Markstrom. I’d trade a 1st and 3rd (maybe a 2024 2nd) but if Calgary wants a top prospect…sorry.

I do like Markstrom but if we make a deal, we are likely, if lucky, getting two more years with him possibly playing at a high level. A 34 year old goalie could also fall off a cliff. It really all depends on the price.

Yea I can’t get excited about trading a young winger with a ton of potential for an up and down goalie over 30.

hey you could be right could be wrong but if your scoffing at the prices for markstrom wait til you see what a top level goalie that checks all the boxes on this boards wish list is going to cost. prices aren't going to magically come down in the summer.

Just seems like poor asset management to me.
whats your solution to goaltending then?

I should add that it stinks to give up first round picks but I’d rather trade unknowns than prospects (I suppose Holtz doesn’t qualify as a prospect anymore but I’m referring to him, Casey) further along in their development.

Hindsight is always 20/20 and I would have made the deal 10 out of 10 times but….it sure would be nice to have Muk and our 2nd rounder right now to use as trade bait. It goes to show how careful you need to be with asset management. The cupboard won’t stay filled up forever.

I would rather go after a Saros, who is five years younger. Even if we were to get two good seasons from Markstrom…it’s hard to imagine we won’t find ourselves back in this same situation in three years.

yeah agree but that price will be even higher and you have to wait another year for him to become available? thats a long time

It won’t be cheap but I don’t see the summer prices being higher when teams like Carolina, who are legit Cup contenders, need to improve their goaltending immediately now.

We had one line (scored all three goals) and Colin Miller last night. That’s it. That’s everyone who showed up.

Yes, we would have won with competent goaltending, but that does not mean they played a good game.

Nemec, Mercer, Hughes, Hughes, Meier, Marino, and the usual suspects all played like complete trash. Against a bad team.

Normally, scoring 3 goals in a game with average Goaltending gives you at least a chance at winning the game.

We don't have that right now.

Hooo boy. I had a very random dream last night that Kevin Rooney was like a gate-keeper to the door that leads down to my basement man cave. I didnt even realize until now that he's even on the flames, havent thought about the guy in 3 years and cant remember a dream where a hockey player just pops up for no reason. Im being dead serious.

Fun fact. I actually put $30 on a +800 that Rooney would score a goal. It wasnt until I went to collect that I realized I never finalized the bet because I got distracted by a call at work. Cant make this shit up.

Yea but I don’t have a problem paying a premium for a younger top goalie.

I remember back in the 90s when it was obvious we had talent but would always lose like we did last night. Terri was replaced with Brodeur and the play of the entire team changed.

Coaching changes were also helpful. Nobody realizes how complacent the players become until a better coach or a system that is better suited to the player's strengths is instilled.

Wasn’t around in the 90s but I see the vision. I really think this is a solid team that hasn’t been given enough credit for their own play due to how big of an issue the goaltending has been. I also find Lindy to be a concern, but not nearly as much as the problem in net.

Don’t even get me started

As bad as Blackwood was last year (and he was clearly and by far the worst goalie on the team of the three last year) he had three one goal against starts in 20 starts last year.

Vitek currently has 2 starts of only 1 goal against in 28 starts.

Vitek has a quality start percentage of .393 this year. Blackwood had a quality starts of .586 last year.

Even Schneider’s ghost had a higher percentage except for his .273 in just 11 starts in 19-20.

Kinkaid’s .395 in 18-19 is close enough, but even he had THREE shutouts that season.

Even Brodeur’s lowest was .462 in 39 starts in 13-14.

PUTRID.

The only thing that flatters him are both Daws and Schmid have a lower percentage, but neither has even gotten half the starts he has. That’s almost an unsustainable number over that 28 starts, unless you’re close to historically bad.
Never thought I'd see the day where the Devils got even WORSE in net after Blackwood was finally jettisoned.

We're a bad team...
We’re actually not.

We deserved to win last night’s game. We would have with even a mediocre goaltending performance. Even a poor goaltending performance gets us a point.

Instead, we lost a very close one (non-empty net) goal game and got one of the lousiest goaltending performances of the season (filled with many lousy goaltending performances) considering the quality of goals that went in.

You can thank #41 for that.
