The challenge makes sense from a probability point of view. If you're right you have a goal + powerplay, so 1.25 goal in average, if you're wrong you get no goal, and if you don't challenge you have only the powerplay so about 0.25 goal in average. That means that if you have 1 chance in 4 to win the challenge, you still take it.
