Like even today it's not like I'd say we were "bad" because it's not like we were giving up anything. We just didn't do anything. The first 2 periods didn't even need to be played because basically nothing was going on.
That's not really true - we gave up chances, but Hayes missed the net multiple times, hit another post - they had a couple clear shots off of breakdowns in front. It could have been 5-1 Flyers at one point if they had a decent player on their team that could shoot outside of Konecny. Schmid was pretty good, but we were pretty lucky to escape there.

The whole first two periods we couldn't complete a pass - mainly because every pass we attempted was like 30 feet. The forwards flew the zone WAY too early just about every time we had the puck.

If not for Wood on the forecheck and Zetterlund/McLeod/Mercer crashing towards the net, we pretty much lose that game.

What I don't like about Jack's evolution was just about everything in that game besides that goal he scored.

Love the guy, but that was a sack of crap effort - the giveaways were terribad.

Glad I finally got to see the Scouts play a game. Very authentic. blech.
The whole team was sleep walking but for a brief moment in the third mercer and jack got us on the board. There’s gonna be games like this but sometimes you just need your best players to play there best in a critical moment and scratch out a couple goals

I think I seen enough of Blackwood, schmid has looked really good
schmid averages over 3 gaa and has a 0.892 save percentage in the nhl. blackwood has better career stats. the sample size is still way too small for any conclusions.

Yo, Akira what is your offseason routine…

This Funking Guy!

Talk about unicorns, the dude once played for the Corpus Christi Ice Rays..
NAHL. 2nd highest junior level in the US. Definitely guys in the NHL that played in the NA.

And it was only 2 games. Then found a spot in the USHL.

True. But we are on that trajectory of Schmid being the #2 next season.

That goal doesn't happen without Wood getting heavy on the force check. It wasn't an unforced error on Farter Cart. Wood was the games 1st start for a reason.

I get the idea of looking at the whole body of work to keep perspective but as a young player once he turns that corner the stuff from before that isn’t all that relevant. It’s like Bratt Nico or Jack. Certain posters might say what happened three years ago somehow defines them now. They look like much different players at this point. Schmid looks nothing like thr goalie that got lit up on routine shots last season. I’m not sure those numbers are relevant but I agree this season is still a very small sample size. The issue is a modest one though. Can he replace Blackwood as a backup goalie? He probably gets to keep proving himself as long as he plays well so we will see. At least we know he can win games and even steal one against a low end team.

i am hopeful for schmid. i am pulling for him as a swiss and devils hockey fan. but the four starts and few extra minutes could be an unsustainable hot streak and his true ability most likely is somewhere between last seasons horror show and this seasons honeymoon. the final outcome for schmid can still be anywhere between ahl starter and nhl starter.

burning bridges for any goalie in the organization or potential goalie draft picks because of schmid is still way premature. as it was premature to neglect potential franchise goaltenders (knight, askarov, wallstedt, cossa) in previous drafts because we had blackwood. obviously knight instead of jack wouldn't look good. but askarov instead of holtz might today find a few more fans than before the 2020 draft.

Martin Brodeur has better career stats than either of them. Maybe we should just play him instead?
sure. you goalies know best here.:sarcasm:

All excellent points. Really good thoughts. You make an excellent point about investing a higher draft pick in a goalie. The team just seems to like the value goalie strategy for whatever reason. I know the staff liked Schmid a lot during the draft. He’s really developed nicely and overcome adversity and injury to do so. I’m thinking he will be closer to this year’s model the last years model when it’s all said and done. I agree with @Bleedred that Schmid and Daws are still best served by some more AHL apprenticeship. I guess we will see what happens once MBW returns.

I actually don't disagree with you on this might just be a hot streak for Schmid. In fact, it is unsustainable, as nobody sustains a .949% long term.

But the only guy that we'd be burning a bridge over for him is a guy that has NUKED his own bridge due to his own pathetic, never-ending play for a long time now.

I think it's imperative one of Schmid/Daws is the backup next year, as they'll be MUCH cheaper than the other in-house option, even if they don't perform any better.

Unless we go the UFA route or try to find another decent-ish goalie through trade.

horrible game by the team but at least they were able to beat a bad opponent. would look a lot different against a capable team, hopefully they take something from that.

also glad they switched the lines back. these should be the top two lines going forward - everyone was producing and then after one down game they switched them and never looked back, im not sure why. the team played considerably worse with those lines than they did before they were jumbled.

also, small sample or not schmid looks much better than last year and much better than blackwood has in years. im comfortable rolling with him as the backup until he gives us a reason to doubt him that isn’t based on last season. he looks confident, tracks the puck well and makes all the saves we need him to and then some

I don't think Schmid was as bad as he played last year in the NHL (but was any goalie really as bad behind that team tho?:sarcasm:) and he's not really as good as he's played this year.

Consider it the percentages evening out.

Market correction.

For those wondering what Akira was thinking in the final moments when instead of covering the puck, he elected to attempt to play it (and looked like he was trying to pull a Marty) :

With 15.2 seconds remaining in the third period of the Devils’ 3-2 win over the Flyers on Saturday, Akira Schmid snatched the puck with his glove, slammed it on the ice in front of him, then ripped it from his own crease.

As the Devils tried to scrape out their 20th victory of the season, Schmid’s mind raced with one anxious thought:

“Just survive,” he said. “You’ve got to survive somehow. That’s all you can do.”

He wasn’t gunning for a rare goalie score, nor was he trying to dish it out to a teammate. Schmid was strategically trying to kill the clock and finally put the Devils’ ugly night to rest

“No, I was trying to clear it,” Schmid said after the victory. “I can see how you would think that, but I just put it down, tried to clear it. I saw the defensemen both had pressure on them so I didn’t want to put it in a bad spot. It’s a risky play, so I didn’t really think about it.”

Well there you have it.

I think the safer play would've been to cover the puck up and force a faceoff but I digress.

BTW, I need to say this :

I mean this is GOD-AWFUL to look back on.

Why the hell would the Devils marketing department do this?

The Devils reverse retro Jerseys were hideous and they played like the Rockies and Scouts against Philly.
